NOTES:
Lucy Guthrie was born bet. 1811 and 1817 in Amherst County, Virginia. Her father died about 1824 after which she was legally placed under her mother’s guardianship. She married Creed Taylor on 23 Sep 1833 in Amherst, VA. They had only 1 daughter, Mary Louise Taylor, born in 1834. Lucy died within the year following Mary’s birth.
There appears to be a lot of confusion about the exact identity of Creed Taylor. The name goes back several generations with two or three men of that name born around the same time in Virginia. Trees appear to have merged some or all, and I’m not going to try to untangle that mess. The info below appears to be connected to this family.
The 1850 census of Eastern District, Amherst, Virginia, USA – Household of Creed Taylor
Creed Taylor, 53, farmer, Real Estate Value: 750, place of birth: Virginia
Jane Taylor, 50, place of birth: Virginia
Mariah Taylor, 15, place of birth: Virginia
Census Note: No relationships are designated in this census. Jane’s inferred relationship is that of a spouse, although no marriage record found. Mariah is a spelling variant of Maria.
The 1860 census of Giles County, Virginia, USA (Post Office: Pearlsburg) – Household of Whitmel W Moore
Whitmel W Moore 33 male farm tenant, real estate value (blank), personal estate value 4,230, born VA
Maria Moore 25 female born Virginia
Anna Moore 8 female, attended school, born Virginia
William Moore 7 male, attended school, born Virginia
Gordon Moore 6 male, attended school, born Virginia
Creed Moore 4, attended school, born Virginia
Mary Moore 2, born Virginia
Albert Moore 10/12, born Virginia
Creed Taylor 64, born Virginia
Census Note: Daughter Maria had married Whitmel W Moore 15 May 1851 in Lynchburg. Her father Creed Taylor is living with them at the time, but not Jane Taylor who was listed with them in 1850. Either she was not a spouse, and was a relative living with them to help out the widower, or was a spouse who presumably died between 1850-60.
Creed Taylor is not living with the family during the 1870 census and is noted to have died in Giles county about 1865. There are some newspaper articles for Lunchburg about a confrontation between a Creed Taylor and a relative resulting in Taylor’s death, but I’m uncertain it that pertains to this Creed Taylor.
CHILD 1: MARY LOUISE TAYLOR
1834VA-1894VA
Mary Louise Taylor was born on 26 June 1834 in Amherst County, Virginia. She was the only child of Creed and Lucy (Guthrie) Taylor. Her mother died while she was still an infant. When she was 16 years of age, she married Whitmell W Moore in Lynchburg, Virginia on 15 May 1851. They settled in Giles County, Virginia and had a large family: Anna (1852), William (c1853), Gordon B (c1853), Creed Taylor (1856), Mary (1858), Albert Howard (1859), Susan (1862), Philip Sidney (1863), Sallie (1864), Whitt (1866), and Emma (1868). Mary Louise’s father, Creed Taylor was living with them during the 1860 census. She died on 19 April 1894 in Giles County, Virginia. Whitmell outlived her by six years. He died on 20 May 1900.
