NOTES: Nathan Guthrie’s father died when he was still a minor. He was legally placed in the guardianship of his mother, Elizabeth (Wingfield) Guthrie on 19 Sep 1825 along with his other young siblings. (GB 6:619)
His older brother Nicholas assumed guardianship of those siblings remaining in their minority on 21 March 1832. (GB 8:187)
On 23 Oct 1849, Nathan Guthrie decided to write a Will while he was still in good health to ensure that his small estate would go to his two sisters, Susan and Sarah.
Later that same year, on 3 Dec 1849, he entered a lawsuit against his own brother, Nicholas Guthrie, and William Kent in Chancery Court. Nicholas was a no-show in court, and presumed to be (or perhaps stated by his brother as being) no longer a resident of Virginia. A notice was posted by court order and ran consecutively for several weeks in the Lynchburg papers.

Their brother Nicholas may have moved to Missouri, and for reasons unknown, Nathan Guthrie along with his two sisters, Susan L (Guthrie) Stockton and Sarah W Guthrie, removed from Virginia and settled in Lafayette County, Missouri prior to the 1850 census.
On 21 Nov 1857 in Westport, Jackson, Missouri, Nathan Guthrie was a witness, along with James Wetzel, to the marriage of Alfred A Swartzell and Ann Hudson by John C Shackelford of the M.E. Church in Westport.
The Kansas City Star article on a Hidden Westport Burial Ground reveal’s Nathan Guthrie’s resting place, birth and death dates. Nathan C Guthrie – born on 5 August 1810 – died on 27 April 1858.
Back in Amherst, Virginia, the will Nathan Guthrie had written was proved in court in December of 1858.
