    RETIREMENT OF MR GUTHRIE, CROSSBURN
The Secretary read the following letter from Mr Robert Guthrie, Crosaburn:–
    Crosaburn, Troon, 9th Feb., 1835.
    JAMES BI’MURTRIE, Esq , Secy.
My DEAR SIR,—I have received several circulars from you asking me to be present at meetings held in Ayr tomorrow in connection with the above. I am still very deeply interested in all concerning its welfare and progress, but the very severe illness from which I have suffered has left me unable to take any active part, or, indeed, any part at all in the business connected with the Association, which I most sincerely regret, as I have been connected with it since it was originated, which, I think, was immediately after the Highland Agricultural Society Show held at Ayr in 1382. I must now ask the committee to kindly allow me to retire, as I would wish my place to be taken by those who can perform the duties of which I am now unable. I am yours very truly, ROBERT GUTHRIE.

During he last two or three years be has been little in the public view. He came out to the Ayr Show be April last, but generally he his been kept at home by a bronchial ailment. In the course of the winter his changed appearance pointed to the end of his pilgrimage.
From early life Mr Guthrie was an extensive farmer, and for more than half a century he was one of the best known men in Ayrshire. His stately form was familiar in Ayr and Kilmarnock, where his cheerful manner and social attractions made him an especial favorite.
Fifty-two years ago he took a leading part in the formation of the Ayrshire Agricultural Association, and was an active director as long as the state of his health permitted him to go out. The assistance he gave in the movement for the Introduction of the Cheddar method of cheese-making is well known.
He was a covenener of the committee of management of the Ayrshire October Show from its establishment at Kilmarnock in 1856, and had the satisfaction of seeing it rise gradually into a world-wide reputation. On the evenings before the Show, when the judges of dairy produce were received, his radiant countenance and social humour gave a charm to the entertainments which will long be remembered in many parts of the country.
Mr Guthrie was fortunate in his descent as well as in his long and honourable career. His father was a man of mark among farmers. He joined in the establishment of the Kilmarnock Farmers’ Club nearly a hundred years ego, and was an intimate friend of Gilbert Burns, of Mossgiel.
