ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG10
When Andrew Guthrie’s father moved to Mississippi, he left his son in the care of relatives, James W Guthrie and his wife Isabella Carmichael who lived in Greene County, Tennessee. The identities of Andrew’s birth parents are unknown. Descendants do not possess Guthrie Y-DNA, so it is possible that any Guthrie ancestry is on his mother’s side. Also possible that if his father was the Guthrie, that Andrew was not his biological son, or that the same genetic profile applies to the East TN Guthries as a whole.
The Guthries of East TN have a convoluted history that appears to include a missing generation or two. The lack of a clear timeline for this family makes it difficult to pinpoint their true origins. We need a Y-DNA participant that can represent the direct male Guthrie line of James G Guthrie, the biological son of James Guthrie & Isabella Carmichael to determine how this jigsaw puzzle fits together.
One potential ancestor is identified as Francis Guthrie (born c1710) who immigrated to Pennsylvania in the early-mid 1700s. He is credited with 3 sons: James, Paul, and Robert. The latter’s lineage has been Y-DNA tested and matches Guthrie Family Group 3A. (See GFG3A-BranchB). James and Paul’s lines remain untested.
Guthrie Family Group 10 currently consists of 2 men by the Guthrie name who descend directly from Andrew & Ibbie. There is also 1 man of the Perry surname who joined the project because he has matching Y-DNA. His Perry ancestors lived in SC. Two other men matching the Y-DNA profile are of the Cameron and Campbell surnames. So, there is no consistency among the other surnames to suggest an origin for the Y-DNA.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
1801: BIRTH of ANDREW S GUTHRIE
Rodgersville, Hawkins, Tennessee, USA on 28 Dec 1801
Andrew’s parents remain unknown. He was given into the care of relatives when his father moved to Mississippi. This sounds like a situation where the mother had died and the father could not handle the care of an infant, but that is simply a theory. His father may have been a Guthrie by name, or Andrew could have assumed the Guthrie surname.
Andrew’s adoptive parents were James W Guthrie c1769-c1829 & Isabella (Carmichael) Trotter. Isabella had a daughter, Susannah, and two sons, David and Joseph, from her first marriage, and one son, James G Guthrie born in 1809.

Greene County, Tennessee, USA on 4 October 1834
1836: BIRTH of SON – LEWIS WILLIAM GUTHRIE
Greene County, Tennessee, USA on 11 Feb 1836
His birth year is listed incorrectly in the Goodspeed Biography, which indicates he was born in Feb 1834, just 8 months before his brother James. However, it also states that Lewis is supposed to be the second child rather than the first. Census records indicate his DOB is 1836, which puts him in the correct birth order.

Findings:
The Y-DNA of direct descendants does not match any of the established Guthrie Family Groups, however, the Most Recent Common Ancestor of both participants is John Alexander Guthrie. Possible that a genetic mismatch occurred at that generations. We need a Y-DNA participant who descends from one of Andrew’s other sons for comparison.
Also possible that the mismatch is due to the adoption of Andrew into the Guthrie family and that the original YDNA was of non-Guthrie origin.
