ORIGIN THEORIES
Although Y-DNA has revealed that William Washington Guthrie’s descendant matches the genetic profile for Guthrie Family Group 2, we’re a little confuddled about his connections to the group. Based on his residence in Sumner and Robertson County, Tennessee, he was expected to be a close match for GFG2A-Branch A: Descendants of James Guthrie Sr c1720IRE-1801NC & Elizabeth (MNU) whose two sons, James Jr and Robert settled in that area. However, an examination of a Y111 marker test revealed none of the unique family markers shared by Branches A, E, and H.
There is a second Guthrie family in Sumner County, Tennessee that arrived there slightly later than Branch A brothers James and Robert Guthrie. These folks descend from GFG2A-Branch I’s Thomas Guthrie and Mildred Howell, whose family lines still need an official match to GFG2A. There does not seem to be an obvious place for William Washington Guthrie to fit into this second branch as there are a limited number of potential fathers named John in that line.
We do have clues! Whether those clues lead us to useful data is the issue.
William Washington Guthrie died on 28 September 1937 in White House, Robertson County, Tennessee. The person reporting his death was his son, William Taylor ‘Bud’ Guthrie, who listed his father’s parents as John Guthrie and Amanda Walker. No marriage record has been found for the couple. No other children have been identified. The earliest verifiable document listing William Guthrie is his marriage record to Savannah Wheeler on 30 Oct 1888 in Sumner County. According to his obituary, William lived in Sumner and Robertson Counties his entire life. So where is he during the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses?
The 1880 census of District 1, Robertson, TN, lists a Willie Guthrie, aged 16 (*born abt 1864), a farmhand living in the household of George Walker, 24, and Amanda Walker, 23. Willie Guthrie is listed as their nephew. Also in the household are Bobbie Walker, 12, son, Andrew Walker, 8, son, Georgia Walker 8/12, son, and William Walker, 29, brother. Not that if this Amanda Walker’s age is correct she would have been born in 1857, only 2 years before William Washington Guthrie was actually born. Even if W.W. was 16 in 1880, his DOB would be 1864, which would still make him too old to be Amanda’s natural son. If these are the right people with the wrong ages, could W.W. actually be Amanda’s nephew? Maybe she was considered his mother for raising him?
Diving even further in the 1850 census records of surrounding counties we do find two men named John Guthrie belonging to the same lineage. One married man named was 62 in 1850, 9 years before William was born. The other is his grandson John who was only 6 in 1850, but would have been 15 in 1859. The older man actually died a year before William’s 1859 birth, so he probably isn’t a candidate unless William’s DOB is off. The younger John Guthrie was still living with his parents in 1860, then 16 years of age. He remained a bachelor. These men are from an Ungrouped Guthrie Family.

Born 1887 TN – Died 20 Feb 1917 TN (aged 30)
Spouses: John T Young (m.1906 TN), FNU Campbell (m. aft.1910)
Y-DNA Project Participants: N/A – Female Guthrie
Autosomal DNA Participants: No
Mrs Viola Guthrie Campbell’s death certificate shows that she was born in Tennessee in 1887 and died on 20 February 1917 in Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Davidson, TN. Only 30 years old, Viola suffered from chronic tuberculosis. She was a housewife, listed as female, white, married. She was buried at Goodlettsville. Her parents were listed as Wm Guthrie, born in TN, and Vann Clark, born in TN. Note that her mother Savannah’s maiden name was Wheeler. It was Savannah’s mother who had the Clark maiden name. The informant was H.B. Wilkerson, of White House, Sumner, Tennessee.
The years between her birth and death are difficult to determine based on available records. Her parents married in Sumner County, TN in 1888 and made their home across the county line in Robertson County, TN. Viola was their first child, presumably born prior to their marriage if the 1887 DOB is accurate. The family hasn’t been found in the 1900 census.
Tennessee State Marriage Records for Robertson County list a marriage license between Viola Guthrie and John Young being issued on 7 June 1906 with the couple being married by J M Ford, Justice of the Peace, on 10 June 1906. The certificate was returned on 12 June 1906 and Recorded in Book 20, Page 56 by County Clerk G E Smith. This marriage produced two children: Bulah Young (1907) and Raymond Young (1909).
The 1910 Census creates some confusion on the matter for Viola appears to be listed twice. She is listed in Civil District 1, Robertson County, TN, boarding in the home of George W Lee, is John Young, M, W, 25, m4; Young, (Difficult to read) Nettie V., F W 20 m1 x4yrsm 2children/2living; Young, Bulah T, F W 3; Young, Raymond O. M W 5/12. Then she is also listed in Civil District 7 of Robertson County, TN in the home of her parents: Young, Viola, daughter, F, W, 20, M1 x4yrs, 2children/2living.
Sometime after the birth of her son Raymond, maybe in 1910, Viola seems to have separated from and divorced her husband John Young. Viola was the first of his 3 or 4 wives. Before her death in 1917 she remarried to a man of the Campbell surname. No records found to provide details.
Children: 2
- Bulah T Young – Abt. 1907 TN – 19/20??
Online trees list Bulah with a specific DOB/DOD of 3 Aug 1907 and 13 July 2004, which matches a SSDI file for a woman living in Michigan bet. 1969-1970, with a last residence location in Detroit, Wayne, MI. There is no other record to associate with this Bulah T Young, who was born in Tennessee. - Raymond O Young – Abt. 1910 TN – 19/20??
The 1910 Census lists this son as Raymond O Young. Born that year, he was 5 months old at the time the census was taken. There are 2 marriage records found in Robertson County, TN for men named Raymond Young, but in 1920 and 1923 when this Raymond would only be 10 and 13 years of age. Online trees have attached him to a man named Raymond James Young, whose records indicate a birthplace in Nashville, Davidson, TN on 15 May 1909. There is no specific data found to prove relatedness to John Young and Viola Guthrie.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
1850: CENSUS of ROBERTSON & SUMNER COUNTIES, TN and SURROUNDING COUNTIES
Calling all men named John Guthrie and ladies named Amanda Walker…. Helloooo! Bueller?
Davidson County, TN:
1) There is a 15 year old John Guthrie living with parents Dudley 66 and Delila 59. This is a branch of GFG1A, so not a match.
2) There is a Jno. F Guthrie, 16, living in the household of Henry 46 and Henly 44 with his younger siblings. This is a branch of GFG5, so not a match.
Wilson County, TN:
1) John Guthry, 12, living in the household of Joseph 46 and Mary 45 and his siblings. Joseph is the son of James Guthrie Jr & Jane Smith of GFG2A-Branch A. Right group, but no shared familial/branch markers.
2) John Guthrie, 6 (born c1844 TN) living in the household of William 31 (born TN) and Elizabeth 30 (born VA) and his younger siblings: William, Nancy, and Abram. This family line remains in an Ungrouped Family Status descending from William C Guthrie d.1823 in Wilson County & Obedience Muckleroy > John Guthrie 1786-1858 & Chloe Babb > William Babb Guthrie & Mary Elizabeth Jackson > John & siblings.
3) John Guthrie, 62 (born c1788 NC) living with wife Chloe (Babb). Next door to the household of son William Babb Guthrie & Elizabeth, above.
Sumner County, TN:
1) John Guthrie, 6 (born c1844 TN), living in the household of Andrew H 41 and Emily 31 and his siblings. This is John Montgomery Guthrie. Andrew is another son of James Guthrie Jr & Jane Smith of GFG2A-BranchA. Right group, but no shared familial/branch markers.
Out of the above households, the two in Davidson County, TN can be completely ruled out because they are the wrong Guthrie Family Group. The two GFG2A-Branch A families, even though they are the right genetic group, have inherited genetic markers common to all descendants of Branches A, E, and H that our Branch N participant does not possess. That leaves two John Guthries from a single family line. Since William Washington Guthrie was born in 1859, it is technically possible that either the elder John Guthrie (DOB: 4 Nov 1786) – aged 73 in 1859 or the younger John Asa Guthrie (DOB: 20 Dec 1844) – aged 15 could be the father. John Asa Guthrie was listed as single in 1910. He lived on a farm with his brothers until his death in 1929.
There are no females named Amanda Walker born 1825-1845 living in Sumner County or the Surrounding Counties in 1850 per the census. The 1880 census where Willie Guthrie is listed as the 16yr old nephew (William Washington Guthrie would be 21) of George Walker 24 & Amanda Walker 23, is the only record found with that combination of names. Two other boys aged 12 and 8 are listed as their sons, along with an 8 month old son. Either there is something way off about the ages of everyone listed in the record or George and Amanda are parenting some children who are not biologically their own.
