ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG2A – BRANCH F

The origin story for Branch F truly begins one generation earlier with another man named John Guthrie who worked in the iron manufacturing business with his brothers Robert and James in or near Edinburgh, Scotland. Versions of the tale told by multiple descendants from different branches of the tree give a slightly different twist on when and where these brothers arrived in America.

Guthrie Family Group 2A – Cluster 1: The Three Brothers Theory consists of Branch B (Progenitor: Robert Guthrie), Branch F (Progenitor: John Guthrie), and Branch I (Progenitor: James Guthrie). According to the family legend revealed in ‘Records of the Guthrie Family of Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Virginia,’ by Harriet Nancy Dunn & Eveline Guthrie Dunn, published in 1898, these men were brothers who worked in iron manufacturing in or near Edinburgh, Scotland.

Their decision to leave Scotland ‘on account of the religious persecutions under which the family suffered’ is noted by the authors. Dunn & Dunn claim the three brothers settled first in Boston where there is a record of a James Guthrie mentioned in the will of John Richardson in 1683. How they reached the conclusion that this James Guthrie was the one who later lived in Pennsylvania is unknown.

Brother John Guthrie settled in Connecticut where he died about 1730 in Litchfield County. John reportedly had 4 sons, but only his namesake John Guthrie has been identified. 

The book makes no further mention of the third brother, Robert Guthrie.

Rev. Laurence Rawlin Guthrie, author of ‘American Guthrie and Allied Families’ has gathered more details from various descendants, and most tell a similar version of the tale. The brothers may or may not have travelled together from Scotland. John may have settled in Ireland before going to America. They may or may not have stopped in Boston. They may have come as early as 1700 or not until 1718 when the Ulster movement to New England took place. One account indicates there were seven brothers.

The origin story for this cluster of men and their families is murky and the search for facts presents quite a challenge. The one hope for clarity comes in the form of Y-DNA of Guthrie men who directly descend from Robert, James, and John. The genetic profiles of their descendants match GFG2A with only rare exceptions, which indicates there could be some truth to those family legends after all.

John Guthrie’s story is marginally better defined than that of his brothers, but not by much. He left Scotland for Ireland, either with or without his brothers. Most stories indicate he was on his own. He married there, to an unidentified woman by whom he had 4 sons: John and 3 unidentified. It is unknown if the other sons were born in Ireland or in America. John’s birth reportedly took place in Connecticut in 1700, which indicates that his father John Guthrie was by then in America.

John Guthrie (The Immigrant) may have entered the colonies by the port of Boston in 1700. One source indicates that he lived there for several years before moving on to Connecticut. That would change the location of his son John’s birth to Massachusetts. At some point he moved to Litchfield County, Connecticut, and successfully engaged in the iron business by running a forge and furnace on the Housatonic River. His death occurred there in 1730.

The identities and fate of his other three sons remain unknown. Did they also settle in Connecticut? Did they live to adulthood? There seems to be no data proving their existence. Perhaps clues will be found in future DNA testing.

John Guthrie (III) was born 25 Feb 1728. Note that ‘South Britain Sketches’ lists this DOB for a son that died the same day and then lists John’s birth as Dec 1730, which is the date for William. His father’s will names him as the eldest son. John Guthrie (III) married Patience Knapp on 10 May 1750 in Washington, Litchfield, CT. They are credited with six ‘presumptive’ sons: John, Daniel, Joel, James, Abraham, and Christian. John (III) received the bulk of his inheritance from his father prior to John Guthrie’s death in 1756. He received only 5 shillings as a token in the will. At the time of his father’s death, John (III) was living in Kent, Litchfield, CT. He was on a list of Revolutionary War soldiers from Litchfield County on 12 May 1775. No further data.

JAMES GUTHRIE
1729-1729

James Guthrie was born in July of 1729 and died in infancy of unknown causes.

WILLIAM GUTHRIE
1730-1806

William Guthrie was born on 30 Dec 1730 in Stratford, Fairfield, CT. (Alt. DOB 5 Dec 1730, Barbour Collection). His father’s will names him as the second son. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Woodbury and united with them in 1752. He married Susanna Kirby in 1755. William received 1/5 of his father’s lands in Judea, and 4 sheep, a yoke of oxen, a bay mare, a pied cow, and 1/2 of the dwelling house upon John Guthrie’s death in 1756. By 1764 William’s family moved to New Preston where he and his wife were admitted to membership of the West Preston Congregational Church. They moved to New York in 1787 settling in Jericho, Chenango County. William and Susanna were parents to 1 son and 8 daughters. William died in 1806 Jericho. Susannah followed him in death in 1813.

JAMES GUTHRIE
1732-1804

James Guthrie was born on 5 Apr 1732 in Stratford, Fairfield, CT. He united with the First Congregational Church of Woodbury, CT in 1752. His marriage to Abigail Betts took place in Woodbury on 17 Jun 1755. His father died a year later leaving James 1/5 of his land in Judea, the east lower room in the dwelling house, a small pied cow, a heifer, and four sheep. James and Abigail’s 9 children were born in Connecticut. By 1771 the family moved to Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts where they joined the First Congregational Church on 4 August 1771. James ‘drew up and was the signer of many important documents before and after the American Revolution. Among them was the historical document termed the ‘Covenant’ signed at Lenox in 1774. James purchased 125 acres of land near Lenox in 1775. He sold 24 of the acres in 1786 and was enumerated in the 1790 census of Chemung, Montgomery, New York. He sold the remaining 99 acres of his Lenox land in 1792 and remained in New York until his death on 22 Apr 1804. Abigail survived him by a decade and died in Sherburne, Chenango, New York in 1814.

JOSEPH GUTHRIE
1733-1808

Joseph Guthrie was born in June of 1733 in Stratford, Fairfield, CT. He is identified as the 4th son of the family by his father’s will. (He’s actually the 5th if infant James Guthrie is counted.) Received 1/5 of his father’s lands in Judea, a yoke of oxen, a Dutch mare, two sows, a heifer, and four sheep. Joseph was married 3 times, first to the widow Elizabeth (Carpenter) Carey in 1759 or 1760. They had 2 children: Abigail & Truman. Elizabeth died in 1765. Joseph’s 2nd marriage occurred 9 April 1767 to another widow, Rachel (Hand) Kirby by whom he had 5 children: Stephen, Elias, Joseph George, and two unidentified infants. Rachel died 6 March 1777 of unknown causes. Joseph served as an ensign in the 10th and later 13th Regiment, 4th Brigade, in April 1777 during the American Revolution. The following year, on 10 Dec 1778, Joseph married yet another widow, Hannah (Woodard) Cogshell by whom he had two daughters: Abigail and Amy. The 1790 census places him in Washington, Litchfield, Connecticut where he continued to live through 1793. On 9 July 1792, Joseph Guthrie had purchased 2 shares of Land in Washington County, Ohio in the Western Territory NW of the Ohio River. The following year he signed over his rights to these share to his eldest sons Stephen and Truman. Joseph died 30 May 1808 in Troy, Ashland, Ohio at the home of his son Joseph Guthrie. He is buried in Glazer cemetery.

MARY GUTHRIE
1735-1809

Mary Guthrie was born 20 Dec (Alt. 23 Nov) 1735. She was baptized on 23 Dec 1735 by the Rev. Nathaniel Chauncey. She married James Calhoun on 31 Dec 1754 at the Congregational Church. She is named in John Guthrie’s will as his eldest daughter and was bequeathed one looking glass, four chairs, and four sheep in addition to what had been previously given to her. Mary died in Litchfield County, CT on 1st May 1809 (or 2 May 1811). James Calhoun died 12 Feb 1814.

EPHRAIM GUTHRIE
1737-1809

Ephraim Guthrie was born on 1 March 1737 in Durham, Middlesex, CT and baptized there on 5 Mar 1737 by the Rev Nathaniel Chauncey. When his father died in 1756, he was bequeathed 1/5 of the family land in Judea, a yoke of steers, a colt, two swine, a heifer, and four sheep. He married about 1762 to Thankful Stone by whom he had 10 children. By 1767, they moved to New Preston, where brother William Guthrie had also located. Sometime before his death in 1809, Ephraim moved to Aurora, Cayuga, New York. His widow Thankful died in Groton, Tompkins, NY on 8 Mar 1819 and is buried at the Cobb Street Cemetery.

EBENEZER GUTHRIE
1740-1825

Ebenezer Guthrie was born on 20 July 1740 in Durham, Middlesex, CT, and baptized on 28 July 1740 by the Rev. Nathaniel Chauncey. When his father, John Guthrie, died in 1756 he gave to Ebenezer 1/5 of the family lands in Judea, 2 yokes of steers, and four sheep. Ebenezer was twice married. First to Hannah Richards, the daughter of Obediah Richards & Sarah Ashley, whom he married on 16 Mar 1767 in Woodbury. She is the mother of his 3 children. Ebenezer served in the Revolutionary War as a captain, and later served the Southbury, New Haven, CT community as a Selectman. Hannah died in 1792, and Ebenezer subsequently remarried to Sarah Nichols Hawley. They had no children. He died in Hartford, CT on 10 Sep 1825 and is buried with his wives in White Oak cemetery in Southbury.

ABIGAIL GUTHRIE
1742-1761

Abigail Guthrie was born on 3 May 1742 in Durham, Middlesex, CT and baptized by Rev Nathaniel Chauncey on 21 July 1742. She was 14 when her father, John Guthrie died, leaving her a heifer and calf, four sheep, bed and bedding, one pot, one kettle, one peel, one pair of tongs, one trammel, a trunk, and a warming pan. Abigail died only 5 years later at the age of 19 on 4 Jun 1761.

SARAH GUTHRIE
1744-1792

Sarah Guthrie was born 30 Apr 1744 in Woodbury, Litchfield, CT. At her father’s death she received a yoke of steers, one heifer, four sheep, a bed and bedding, one pot, one kettle, one peel and tongs, one trammel, one chest, and a warming pan. Sarah married Reuben Murray in Kent in 1766. He served as a lieutenant in Capt. Daniel Herrick’s Company of Albany County Militia. They became parents to 9 children. Sarah (Guthrie) Murray died in Pompey, Onondaga, New York in 1792. Reuben Murray died there o 26 Nov 1810. Sarah’s descendants include Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Lydia Guthrie was born in Woodbury, Litchfield, CT on 16 July 1746. Her mother Abigail had died within a year of her birth. She was only 10 when her father, John, died in 1756. He left her 2 heifers, a calf, 4 sheep, a bed and bedding, one pot and kettle, one peel and tongs, one trammel, one chest and a warming pan. Lydia married Eleazer Ingraham on 5 (or 6) August 1765. They had 9 children. Lydia died on 2 Nov 1831 and is buried in the Friends Burial Ground in Jerusalem, Yates, NY. Her husband died 3 years later.

c1630-1660: BIRTH of JOHN GUTHRIE (THE IMMIGRANT)
This is rough range of dates estimating when John Guthrie might have been born. He was noted to have been in business with his brothers in 1680, so we should be able to infer that he was an adult by that time. Probably at least 20 years of age. This was also before his marriage, although that does not always indicate he was younger versus older at the time. Chances are that his DOB is closer to the 1650s-60s.

The identity of John Guthrie’s wife is unknown. They are credited with 4 sons only one of whom has been identified.

Since John’s son John was born in CT about 1700, and there are reportedly only 4 children in the family, the marriage date might be closer to the 1690s rather than almost immediately after John’s arrival in Ireland.

1684: POSSIBLE RECORD MATCH
If the 1700 arrival date is incorrect (see below), it is possible that John’s immigration to America occurred earlier. New Jersey Colonial Records identify a list of servants imported from Scotland by Capt. Thomas Pearson. A “John Gutrie” is mentioned, but it is difficult to determine if he is one of the servants or a purchaser of the servants.

“After a weary some voyage of two months he landed at Boston. Remaining here but a few years, he moved to Washington, Litchfield County, Connecticut, and engaged successfully in the iron business, running a forge and furnace on the Housatonic river.”

1700 is also the year John Guthrie’s son, John Guthrie, was said to be born in CT. If the arrival in Boston occurred that year and he remained there for several years, it would seem to indicate either the arrival year or birth year is wrong.

John Guthrie was reportedly the youngest of 4 brothers. The other brothers are unknown, but since John’s birth year coincides with the approximate arrival of the family in America, it could be assumed that the other three were born in Ireland. His birthplace is listed as Connecticut, but it could have been Massachusetts.

Abigail’s birth is documented in the Barbour Collection of early Stratford, CT vital records as 15 Nov 1702, daughter of Ens. John & Mary. Recorded Vol LR2.

Note that the Dunn book lists her DOB as 11 Nov 1702.

The Barbour Collection of early Stratford, CT vital records records the marriage of John & Abigail twice. First in LR2-57a as the marriage of Abigail Coe and John Griffin (overwritten to read Guthrie of Durham) on 1 June 1827. Then again on LR2-481a as Abigail Coe and John Guther for the same date, with a marginal note indicating the month might be July instead.

1728: BIRTH of SON – JOHN GUTHRIE (III)
John was born on 20 Jan 1728 in Stratford, Fairfield, CT. He married Patience Knapp, May 10 1750 in Woodbury, CT. John was a Revolutionary War soldier. He married Patience Knapp.

1729: BIRTH & DEATH of SON – JAMES GUTHRIE
James was born in July 1729 in Stratford. He died in infancy at an unspecified date.

1730: DEATH of JOHN GUTHRIE (THE IMMIGRANT)

1730: BIRTH of SON – WILLIAM GUTHRIE
William was born on 30 December 1730 in Stratford. He married Susanna (nee unknown) aka ‘Suse’. William died in Jericho, NY in 1806. Alternate death location is given as Bainbridge, Chenago, NY. Online trees list William & Suse with several children, but only 1 son, also named William.

1732: BIRTH of SON – JAMES GUTHRIE
ames was born on 5 April 1732 in Stratford. He married Abigail Betts on 17 July 1755 at Woodbury, CT. James died 22 April 1804 in Sherburne, NY. There are currently no participants in the DNA Project representing James’ direct line. James & Abigail were grandparents to Samuel Guthrie (1782-1848), a physician and inventor. He is credited with the discovery of chloroform. 

1733: BIRTH of SON – JOSEPH GUTHRIE
Joseph was born in June of 1733 in Stratford, CT. He married 1st Mrs Elizabeth (Carpenter) Carey; 2nd Mrs Rachel (Hand) Kirby; and 3rd Mrs Hannah (Woodard) Cogshell. Joseph had issue by all three wives, including 4 sons. He died 30 May 1808 in Troy, Ohio.

Mary was born in Durham, Middlesex, CT on 20 December 1725. She was baptized on 23 Dec 1735 by the Rev. Nathaniel Chauncey. She married James Calhoun on 31 Dec 1754 in Washington, Litchfield, CT. Mary died on 1 May 1809 in Washington, Litchfield, CT.

1737: BIRTH of SON – EPHRAIM GUTHRIE
Ephraim was born in Durham, Middlesex, CT on 1 March 1737. He was baptized on 5 March 1727 by Rev. Nathaniel Chauncey. He married Thankful Stone. Online trees list them with 12-14 children, about 7 of whom were sons. 

1740: BIRTH of SON – EBENEZER GUTHRIE
Ebenezer was born on 20 July 1740 in Durham, Middlesex, CT. He was baptized on 29 July 1740 by Rev. Nathaniel Chauncey. He married 1st Hannah Richards on 16 March 1767 in Southbury; 2nd Sarah N. Hawley, 1794, Southbury. 

1742: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – ABIGAIL GUTHRIE
Abigail was born in Durham, Middlesex, CT on 3 May 1742. She was baptized by Rev. Nathaniel Chauncey on 21 July 1742.

The family removed from Durham and resettled in Woodbury, CT sometime between the baptism of daughter Abigail and the birth of daughter Sarah.

1744: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – SARAH GUTHRIE
Sarah was born in Woodbury, CT on 3 April 1744. She married Reuben Murray in 1766. Sarah died in 1792 in Pompey, Onondaga, New York. Sarah & Reuben were the great-great-great grandparents of Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill. This connection was also published in the Clan Guthrie News.

1746: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – LYDIA GUTHRIE
Lydia was born in July of 1746 in Woodbury, CT. She married Eleazer Ingraham on 5 or 6 August 1765 in Washington, Litchfield, CT. 

1747: DEATH of ABIGAIL (COE) GUTHRIE
Abigail died on 25 March 1747 in Southbury, Fairfield, CT.

1747-1756: MARRIAGE to SUSANNA (MNU)
John Guthrie remarried sometime after Abigail’s death. Susanna was named in his will (see the DUNN info below). The records of Washington, Litchfield, CT show a marriage of a Susanna Guthrie of Judea to Daniel Orson of New Milford dated 15 Nov 1756, which is a couple of months after John’s death.

John died on 19 August 1756 in Woodbury, Fairfield, CT. 

THEIR STORY

The family legend of Branch F is tied to those of Branches B and I as part of the Three Brothers origin story.

John Guthrie left Scotland for Ireland, not because of religious persecution as was the case with other GFG2A branches, but for his own interests apart from his family. He reportedly ended his partnership with his brothers, Robert and James, and left for the Ulster plantations of Northern Ireland. There, he married and around 1700, they left for America. This couple reportedly had 4 sons only 1 of who is known: John Guthrie. No evidence of these brothers has been found to date. John Guthrie the immigrant is said to have died in Connecticut about 1730.

John Guthrie (II) and Abigail Coe produced a large family primarily residing in Connecticut and New York. Among their descendants are Dr. Samuel Guthrie, who discovered chloroform. He was a physician, scientist, and inventor. The second of their descendants is perhaps the most famous, although not a Guthrie by name. Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of Great Britain descends from their daughter Sarah (Guthrie) Murray.
