Did James C Guthrie marry a cousin from his own extended family clan, or did he come to Carteret County, North Carolina from another unrelated Guthrie Family Group?
The answer to this question may provide us with revelations for all of the Guthrie Family Group 5 branches.
The Guthries of Carteret County, North Carolina have a history of marrying their cousins on all sides of the family. It simply means that once settled in the area they tended to remain living within the region. James C Guthrie married in Carteret County, North Carolina, in 1828, and we are told was also born there. If the latter is true, there is an increased possibility that he shares a common Guthrie ancestor with his wife, Caroline Guthrie, who was the daughter of Benjamin Guthrie (1781-1840) & Hannah Paretree. Her grandparents were Samuel Guthrie Jr & Bell (MNU), great-grandparents Samuel Guthrie & Sarah Williston, and 2xGGP Daniel Guthrie & Mary Little.
One of our Y-DNA participants is a direct descendant of Samuel Guthrie & Sarah Williston, but the results are a genetic mismatch to any Guthrie Family Group. Instead, the surname matches are to men of the Willis and Williston surname. This could be related to an adoption of a stepson, a relative of Sarah Williston, or a non-paternal event relating to someone of that surname or its variants. We don’t have enough participants from the line to determine if it is an isolated result or if the genetic profile extends to the whole line.
If it does extend to all of Samuel & Sarah’s descendants, this means that James C Guthrie must either descend from one of Samuel’s brothers or be completely unrelated to their Guthrie family. Again, not enough genetic evidence to support or debunk the theory.
For now, GFG5 Branch E refers to the descendants of James C Guthrie & Caroline Guthrie, and does not extend to the remainder of the Carteret families.

I recently started getting results from my Family Tree DNA submitted (still awaiting for the Big-Y to finish). My best matches are coming back Guthrie and all lead back to James C. I believe the connection occurred in 1852-53 and most likely involves one of James’ “unidentified” Sons. I’d like to hear if anyone else has matched up with the “unknowns”? And what kind of work these guys did for livings..? If there’s a project open, on Family Tree, what is it called so I can join it? Thanks!
