Primary Sources
These are original or near-contemporary records created at or close to the time of events (e.g., official government documents, church registers, or direct eyewitness accounts).
- U.S. Federal Census Records (enumerations listing the household directly):
- 1850 U.S. Census, Huron, Wayne County, New York: Lists Ahiel Guthrie (likely William’s father), Diantha, William (age 25, farmer), Sarah (age 25), and young daughter Caroline (age 2). This places the family in context and confirms approximate birth years and locations.
- 1860, 1870, 1880 U.S. Censuses for Huron, Wayne County, New York: These should show the growing family, William’s occupation as farmer, Sarah’s birthplace (England or noted as New York in some transcriptions, though blog states Suffolk, England), and children’s names/ages. Variations in reported birthplaces highlight transcription nuances or enumerator errors.
- Implications/Edge Cases: Censuses are primary but prone to errors (e.g., ages rounded, names misspelled as “Guthrie” or variants). Pre-1850 censuses list only head of household, so earlier details rely on parents’ entries.
- New York State Census Records (non-population schedules or state-specific):
- 1855, 1865, 1875 New York State Censuses for Wayne County: These often provide more detail than federal ones, including exact town, occupation, and nativity. Likely to confirm Sarah’s English origins and marriage timing.
- Vital Records (Marriage, Death, Burial):
- Marriage record or bond/index for William Goodwill Guthrie and Sarah Roberts, ca. 1847 in Wayne County, New York. No exact digitized record is cited in the blog, but FamilySearch lists a marriage date of 14 September 1847 (potentially from user-submitted data or derived indexes).
- Death certificates or registers: William’s death on 15 August 1892 and Sarah’s on 23 July 1896 in Huron, Wayne County. New York death indexes/records from this era may be available via state archives or local clerks.
- Cemetery records and headstone inscriptions: Huron Evergreen Cemetery (Find a Grave memorials likely exist, though not directly sourced in the blog). Gravestones provide death dates, sometimes birth or family info, serving as primary if inscribed contemporaneously.
- Church or Baptismal Records:
- Potential Methodist or local church records in Huron for children’s baptisms (e.g., son James Reuben became a Rev. in the Methodist Protestant Church). No specific records cited, but North Huron Methodist Protestant Church is referenced indirectly via son’s appointment.
- Probate, Land, or Tax Records:
- Wayne County land deeds, tax assessments, or wills (William died 1892; potential probate file). These could confirm property ownership and heirs.
