NOTES:
The origins of Canulem’s name are unknown. It is a rare find and generally listed by a number of spellings and sometimes starting with a letter K. Living in Beaufort, Canulem Hines Guthrie became a fisherman, a prime occupation in an area surrounded by water. He married Sarah P Copes in 1866, but she died within a year, the cause unknown. They had no children.

Canulem married again in 1868 to Susan Roberson. Note that in some trees her surname is listed as Robinson, but documentation appears to list her family under the Roberson name. The 1870 census shows Canulem Guthrie, fisherman, 32, and his 2 month old son, Ernest, living in the household of Joseph L Robertson, 60, a seaman. Susan, 31, is also there, but listed under her parents and siblings as a Roberson. She is also listed as “without occupation” at the time

The typed transcriptions of Canulem and Susan’s marriage record only provide the year 1868. Looking for an original.

During the 1880 census they were living at #56 Isotore Street in Beaufort. Canulem H Guthrie, 41, a fisherman, is now listed as the head of household, along with wife Susan J 39, sons Ernest 10, Walter 8, and Clarence 5. His father-in-law Joseph L Roberson is now 69, widowed, and working as a miller. An important finding this census year is that Susan is listed as “insane”. At this time that category covers a large range of mental illnesses. The previous census did have a category for documenting illnesses, but there was no notation by Susan’s name at that time.

See Gray’s New Map of Beaufort – 1880 for street locations.

The 1900 indicates that Susan had given birth to 4 children only 3 of whom were still alive. At that time they were living on Ann Street in Beaufort. Sometime between 1870 and 1900, Susan had lost a child. She was still categorized as being “insane” during this census year. I find no newspaper references in the few Beaufort historic papers available online. Susan died in 1903 and Canelum in 1906.
