NOTES: ‘American Guthrie and Allied Families’ author Lawrence R Guthrie conjectures that Travis Guthrey was a son of Thomas Guthrey, and the YDNA of a direct male descendant matches the rest of GFG4’s genetic profile. He lists Travis’ wife as being a Miss Hill. (AGAF, p.50). The names give to LRG by a descendant in their correspondence were: John, Samuel, James, Thomas, William, Elijah, and Dennett Hill Guthrey. Plus a note of ‘daughters, whose names are unknown.”

William Guthery married Nancy Davis on 5 January 1805 in Halifax County, Virginia (Halifax Book 1, p.59). The children are not named in William’s 1819 will. Nancy appears to have remained a widow. She is named as the head of household in the 1830, 1850, and 1860 censuses.

CHILD 7: THOMAS GUTHREY – (Parents Unverified)
1777VA – Before 1827VA
Spouse: Mary ‘Polly’ Baskerville
The name Baskerville first appears in ‘American Guthrie and Allied Families’ on p.37 (IMG60) with the first introduction of Thomas Guthrey, the likely grandfather of this man. The author claimed Guthrey’s first wife was a Patsy Baskerville. His will was also signed in the presence of several individuals, one of whom was a Richard Baskerville. Whether or not there was a Baskerville connection in that first generation, it seems there is one in the third. A marriage bond dated 4 Dec 1793 between Thomas Guthrey and William Guthrey, bondsmen, for the marriage of Thomas Guthrey to Mary Baskerville (daughter of Richard Baskerville) was signed in Cumberland County, Virginia. George Baskerville, witness. Virginia records the marriage as occurring on 6 December 1793.
There are currently no YDNA participants to verify Thomas Guthrie and Mary Baskerville’s descendants as belonging to GFG4. Placement within the group seems likely, but Thomas’ placement among Travis’ sons still in question. The William Guthrey who was his bondsman might be his older brother. He might be his uncle, William Guthrey, or that William Guthrey and his wife Rebecca Noel could actually be his parents.
Thomas Guthrey died about 1837 in Halifax County, Virginia. His widow survived him. The names of the Guthrey-Baskerville children are all documented in a Chancery Case. Their birth order is unknown as most of them remain unidentified in census records. As the couple married in December of 1793, the children were likely born over a twenty-year span between 1794 and 1814. The Baskerville family chart indicates the two daughters remained unmarried, but does not mention the sons.
