Robert Guthrie 1699 SCT – 1784 SCT and Jean Fowler / Fuller
~ Merchant ~
in Dundee, Angus, Scotland

ROBERT GUTHRIE
Parents: James Guthrie (merchant) 1669SCT-1710SCT and Christian Scott 1669SCT-aft.1710SCT
Birth: 4 June 1699
Birth Location: Dundee, Angus, Scotland
Baptism/Location: 8 June 1699 at Dundee, Angus, Scotland
Marriage/Location: Jean Fowler on 3 Aug 1726 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland
Occupation: Merchant (Mercantile Business)
Death: 1784 (age 85)
Death Location: Unknown, presumably in Dundee, Angus, Scotland
Burial Location: Unknown, presumably in Dundee, Angus, Scotland
Notes:

Robert Guthrie was the 4th child, 3rd son of the family. The ‘Name Fathers’ listed on his baptismal record were: Rot: Lamb of Aldbarr, Mr Rot: Rait, Minister of Dundee, Rot: Lauderdale surveyor of his majesty’s customs, and Rot: Watson, merchant.

Like the majority of his family, Robert became involved in the mercantile business. When he was 27 years of age, he married 3 August 1726 in Dundee to Jean Fowler. They had 5 daughters born bet. 1728 and 1737. There might have been a son, too, but although James; birth record identifies his father as Robert Guthrie, it identifies his mother by the name Ann Fuller. There is no indication on the record that the child was born outside of a legal marriage, and these record keepers are not shy about using the words fornication or illegitimate. So, it may be possible that they simply wrote down the wrong name for the mother. Daughter Clara’s record is a mix of both.
