NOTES:
There is apparently more than one Bristow family tracing their lineage back to the Samuel Bristow who was born 1730 in Middlesex County, Virginia to Nicholas and Mary (Gardner) Bristow. Online trees provide diverse family structures with one or two wives, and the identity of those wives being different based on the theory of the day. There are also surname variances in original documents, which lends to the confusion: Bristow, Brister, Bristoe, causing some to question whether the Samuel listed therein is the same man or a second one.
The marriage records of Middlesex County, Virginia do not reveal the full name of Samuel Bristow‘s first wife nor exactly when or where they married. Children born in the county are attributed to Samuel Bristow by a wife named Mary. Her maiden name is not found in any of the records. There is a records gap between 1760 and 1765 when Samuel Bristow disappears from Middlesex. Then, in 1765, the marriage of Samuel Bristow and Ann Guthery, daughter of William Guthery and Frances Wilbourn, was recorded. The groom is listed as being of Surry County, another Virginia county found further south along the James River. There are no original records found in Surry County (so far) indicating that a man of the name Samuel Bristow (or any variant surname) resided there at that time. There are records found in neighboring Isle of Wight and Southampton Counties for Samuel Brister placing him within the same region.
It is certainly within the realm of possibility that Samuel‘s fist wife died as a result of childbirth or illness while they were living in Surry County, Virginia. Having several young children, it seems likely that he would remarry quickly, and the best place to do that would potentially be back home in Middlesex County.
Ann Guthrie, a younger daughter of William Guthrie and his second wife Frances Wilbourn, was born 4 August and baptized 1 September 1745 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia. She was 19 years old at the time of her marriage on 7 January 1756 to Samuel Bristow.
Since Samuel Bristow was noted to be ‘of Surry County’ at the time of his marriage, it should be no great surprise that that there is no further record of the couple in Middlesex County. After acquiring his new wife, they simply returned to his home near the James River.
Ancestry user amaldo6922, having gathered a lot of family research, including digital resources for Southhampton County, VA at The Branley Association of America site, has some alternate theories (see gallery). The question is whether Samuel Brister of Southampton County, VA is also Samuel Bristow of Middlesex County, VA. The Southampton man’s wife was indeed named Ann, but there is no use of her maiden name in those records. It is noted in amaldo6922’s brief on the family that the name ‘Howard’ is used as a middle name, and therefore postulates that Samuel Brister of Southampton may be a different man than Samuel Bristow of Middlesex, and that his marriage to an Anne Howard is unrecorded. This also suggests that all of the children belong to one mother.
The “Howard Theory” has been copied into numerous trees including Geneanet Community trees that have been recently added to Ancestry.com, once again making an unproven theory seem legitimate without definitive evidence. The use of Howard as a middle name is not widespread amongst the family members, but is found twice. Samuel Brister Jr‘s daughter Polly Howard Brister‘s middle name was documented in Court Records. The son of Benjamin Brister, among the youngest five children in the family, had a son, Thomas J Brister, who also used the middle name Howard for one of his own children. One counterpoint to the theory is the use of ‘Wilbourn’ as a son’s given name by Lucy (Brister) Stephenson since Wilbourn was the maiden name of Ann Guthrie‘s mother.
No consideration seems to have been given that Samuel Bristow of Middlesex had a first wife, Mary, whose maiden name is currently unknown. Could it be Howard? That surname is also found in Middlesex.
The Samuel Brister who wrote his will on 2 Oct 1794 in Southampton County, Virginia identified his wife as Ann Brister, along with his last 5 children: John, Benjamin, James, Hannah & Willis Brister. He also indicates in the will that there are other children not named or numbered therein for whom he has already provided. These are either specifically identified or the relationship inferred by other Southampton County records.
The only 2 records found in the Christ Church Parish Register for Samuel Bristow:
CCPR, p.129 – Samuel, son of Nicholas & Mary Bristow born March ye 27 baptized April ye 3 1730.
CCPR, p.288 – (Jo)hn, son of Samuel & Mary Bristow born June 7th (1752)
Records in Middlesex County, Virginia, Wills, Inventories & Accounts, 1673-1812 (Hopkins, 1989)
p.20 – Mary Bristow, daughter of Samuel Bristow & Mary Bristow, died 11 Jan 1760.
p.22 – Samuel Bristow, son of Samuel Bristow & Mary Bristow, born 17 April 1756.
p.25 – Mary Bristow, daughter of Samuel Bristow & Mary Bristow, born 25 Nov 1758.
p.83 – Sale of Estate of John Blake, decd., to: (includes) William Bristow, Samuel Bristow, Edward Bristow. 2 Sep 1755.
Ann‘s father, William Guthrie, wrote a will on 2 April 1781 prior to his death naming his wife Frances and son Samuel Guthrie, but making his bequests only to his “surviving children” rather than identifying them by name and location, so there are no additional clues.
Woolley’s 1969 book ‘John Bristow of Middlesex County, and his Descendants through Ten Generations’ p.27, indicated that Samuel is the son of Nicholas Bristow and grandson of John Bristow, born on the 27th of March 1730. “He lived in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, and died in Southampton County, Virginia, between the 2d October 1794 and the 1st June 1795, the dates respectively of his Will and its probate. He married twice: first to Mary….., date unknown, and second to Ann Guthery, the 1st June 1765. Eight children survived him, but we do now know which of the wives was the other of these children:
1. ***hn (John?), born the 7th June 1752
2. Samuel–born the 16th April 1756
3. Mary–born the 25th November 1758.
4. Benjamin–born in 1760, probably January.
5. Robert–born the 25th December 1760.
6. James–unable trace farther.
7. Hannah–unable trace farther.
8. Nicholas–unable trace farther.”
Family records indicate they resided in Nottaway Parish at some point. This parish served both Isle of Wight and Southampton Counties, VA, which may be the reason Woolley selected Isle of Wight as Samuel Bristow‘s home. No corresponding data has been linked to Surry County, VA at this point for comparison, indicating that it may have been a temporary residence in the region of the James River.
The last mention of Samuel and Mary Bristow is the death of their daughter Mary on 11 January 1760. The family then disappears from the records of Middlesex County. Not found in the Vestry Book or Deeds. Wooley lists son Robert‘s birth in Gloucester County, VA, perhaps a temporary home while heading south along Chesapeake Bay toward the James River.

If Mary Bristow, wife of Samuel Bristow (b.1730), died between 1760-1765, he presumably sought out a wife from his home community in Middlesex County. After marrying Ann Guthrie on 7 January 1765, they would potentially have returned to his home, then in Surry County. By this point he has several children under the age of 10, with more children by his second wife added in over the next 15-20 years.

CHILDREN of SAMUEL BRISTOW, MARY (MNU), and ANN GUTHRIE
Outside theories suggest these individuals may be listed as family due to the misidentification of records of multiple men of the name Samuel Bristow. Further study is required. Autosomal DNA Testing of descendants of the children believed to belong to Ann Guthrie, born after 1765, should be examined for Guthrie matches. However, due to the genetic distance of living descendants, confirmatory matches to Guthrie Family Group 1 ancestors may be difficult to triangulate.
JOHN BRISTOW
Born 7 June 1752 VA – 17?? VA
Samuel Bristow and his first wife Mary’s eldest known son was born 7 June 1752 in Middlesex County, VA. Potentially died young as there is another son by the same name born to the 2nd wife. There is also no data for John Brister / Bristow in the earlier Southampton County, VA court records, suggesting that he had not reached his majority at the time of his death.
