NOTES: The youngest of ten children, Caleb Guthrie was born on 28 April 1798 in Woodford County, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth “Betsy” Smith, the daughter of Joel and Catherine (Casper) Smith. After a few years of marriage and four children, the family moved to Shelby County, Kentucky. The Chestnut Grove Baptist Church was built on a corner of land he donated. Caleb served as a Baptist minister from 1830 to 1878. He was also involved in the pork packing business out of Louisville. About 1858, they moved to Mexico, Audrain County, MO with several sons and their families. Nearly twenty years later, Caleb and Betsy returned to Kentucky residing with their daughter, Mrs James Crawford. Caleb was stricken with paralysis in June 1873, causing a gradual decline until his death five years later. He died in Eminence, Kentucky on 7 Sep 1878 and Betsy on 8 Aug 1884.

Sarah Ann Guthrie was born in Woodford County, KY, the eldest child of Caleb and Betsy (Smith) Guthrie. She married at 18 to George Caplinger Price on 24 Jan 1837. She died just over a year later on 4 Feb 1838 in Shelby County, Kentucky. Two years after Sarah’s death, George remarried to her younger sister, Mary Guthrie.

The second child of the family, Mary Guthrie was born 31 May 1820 in Woodford County, Kentucky. She married her sister’s widower, George Caplinger Price on 19 Feb 1839, a year after Sarah’s death. They lived in Shelby County, Kentucky where George was a local farmer. Their family grew to include 3 sons and 3 daughters. Mary was only 37 at her death due to consumption on 30 April 1858.

CHILD 3: MARTHA GUTHRIE

Martha Guthrie was 18 at the time of her marriage to Joe Stone, on 9 July 1840 in Shelby County, Kentucky. They were living there during the 1850 census, which listed them next to the Caleb Guthrie family. Joe was a farmer. At that time their family included “JH Stone 32 M Farmer, 4080 Real Estate; M Stone 28; CG Stone 9 M; JH Stone 6 M; AE Stone 4 F, all born in Kentucky.”

Martha died on 20 March 1857, just one day short of her 35th birthday. She is buried in the Maddox-Stone Cemetery in Shelbyville, Shelby, Kentucky.

Joseph Stone moved his family to Missouri where he remarried in Lafayette to Irene Hellen Cheatham on 7 Oct 1858. They lived in Jackson and Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri. Joe and Hellen expanded the family to include several other children. He became a merchant.

In Thomas Goodrich’s ‘Black Flag’ he quotes a letter from a Missouri resident about the changes locally due to the war. In it, he quotes:
‘Joseph Stone left his farm and moved in to Warrensburg, where his daughter Anna married a Federal soldier. Caleb Stone, his oldest son, was killed at Springfield the first year o the war.’ Caleb fought for the CSA. This shows how Missouri was a state with divided loyalties to both USA and CSA within families.

Coleman Guthrie, the eldest son of the family, was born in Shelby County, Kentucky. He took up farming. He married Mary Jane Crawford, a daughter of John and Cassandra (Thomas) Crawford, when he was 21 and they started their family in Kentucky. Between 1852 and 1855, they moved to South Fork, Monroe, Missouri where the youngest of their children were born. Mary Jane died 22 Nov 1863. She was only 37. Coleman was then a widower with six children aged 5 to 15 years of age. He remarried the following year on 28 Jun 1863 to Betty Rudasill, the 22 year old daughter of John B and Mary Catherine (Smith) Rudasill. They continued to live in Monroe, Missouri adding two children to the family. During the 1900 census, Coleman and Betty are found living in Philo, Champaign, Illinois with their daughter Emma and son-in-law Lloyd Kock and family. Their son, Marion Stuart Guthrie, was also with them. They returned to Missouri, settling in Paris, Monroe, Missouri. Coleman died there at the age of 79 on 8 Mar 1805. He was buried at the Long Branch Cemetery in Monroe County. Bettie lived with her son Stuart until her own death on 15 April 1924 at the age of 81. She was interred at the same cemetery.

Joel Guthrie was a Coal Dealer / Trader. He married Martha Davis Moxley on 3 Sep 1850 by whom he had two sons and seven daughters. They moved to Salt River, Mexico, Audrain County, Missouri before the 1860 census.

During the 1880 census, he functioned as a Census Enumerator for Audrain County, Missouri.

His obituary was published in the Mexico Weekly Ledger on Thursday, November 12, 1891:
“Joel Guthrie Dead. One of Audrain’s Most Substantial Citizens and Prominent Church Men Passes Away.” The notice indicates he had been suffering for two months with a carbuncle on the back of his neck. He was a clerk of the Baptist church, and a deacon in the same church.

A merchant, William Smith Guthrie married Mary Mildred Woods. They were parents to two sons and two daughters. The couple made their home in Eminence, Henry County, Kentucky. William died in Mexico, Audrain, Missouri of Typhoid fever on 9 Oct 1864. His remains were removed on 25 Jan 1865 to the family plot in the Eminence, KY cemetery. William’s widow, Mary Mildred Woods Guthrie remarried on 15 June 1871 and they had two children. She died in 1908.

At the age of 17, Phoebe Guthrie married James Wilson Crawford. A farmer, he became a local judge and magistrate. They were members of the Christian Church. Their first son died during his infancy. Both sons James and John are classified as “insane” on the 1880 census, both living at home. James’ entered inpatient services at the Eastern Kentucky Asylum for the Insane in Lexington sometime before the 1900 census where he remained until his death in 1927. Son John remained at home after his father’s death in 1899 as a share cropper on the farm, marrying in 1901 and having children. Two of Phoebe’s other children died in early childhood, causes unknown. Phoebe died in 1916 at the age of 84.

Caleb Guthrie Jr was the youngest son of the family. He was born in Shelby, Kentucky on 12 Mar 1836 and listed in the 1850 census of District 1 when he was a boy of 14. He started out adult life as a young farmer living with his parents who were then in their sixties. Caleb married at 27 to Caroline Amelia Hall on 25 Aug 1863. Caleb later worked as a Store Clerk and a Traveling Salesman. They had no children. His obituary, published on 9 Dec 1907 in the Mexico Ledger, indicates that “Mr Guthrie was a genial, good hearted man, liked by all who knew him, and he was ever ready to do a kind act or administer a helping hand, doing what ever he could for friend or neighbor.” His wife Carrie survived him by two years. She died on 28 Mar 1909 at 67 years of age.
