James Guthrie was born in Wells County, Indiana on 19 Sep 1840. He moved to Iowa with his parents when he was about 3 and a half years old. He attended school for about 3 months when he was 12 and again for 3 months at about 18 years of age. He remained upon the farm until 1869 when he moved to Oskaloosa and in 1870 entered Oskaloosa College at 30 years of age remaining there until 1876 when he achieved two degrees, a Bachelor of Arts and a diploma from the classical bible department. In addition to his ministry, James became a coal operator and manufacturer of brick. He entered Penn College in 1896 where he pursued post-graduate courses in chemistry, anatomy, and histology, eventually entering Rush Medical College in Chicago. He was once nominated for the position of State Senator.

James’ wife was Catherine Davis, whom he married 30 Oct 1859 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa. They had 2 children. She also attended Oskaloosa College, achieving a degree in 1875 graduating from the bible department one year before her husband. Catherine died in Oskaloosa on 4 May 1911 at the age of 70. James followed her in death 5 years later on 22 January 1916. They are buried in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.

Her parents were still living in Jasper County, Iowa at the time of Alice Maybell Guthrie’s birth on 23 Nov 1861. They soon moved to Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa where she grew up. She was 8 at the time of the 1870 Census in Oskaloosa, and her brother Leonard 6.

About 1880, Alice married Solon Danforth Stuart. He was born in Peacham, Caledonia, Vermont on 6 July 1856, but moved with his parents to Stark County, Illinois where he grew to manhood. He moved to Iowa in 1879 just prior to marrying Alice Guthrie. Solon was initially employed as a farmer. The couple had 3 daughters and 2 sons.

The family moved from Iowa to Custer, Keya Paha, Nebraska in 1885, and then to Springview by 1900. He continued working as a farmer for several years. By the 1910 census, Solon was employed as a salesman at a lumber yard, but farming again in 1920. He died on 5 December 1945. Alice lived a few years longer. She was 87 at her death on 10 January 1949. They are buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Springview, Kenya Paha County, Nebraska.

CHILD 2: LEONARD CALDWELL GUTHRIE

Leonard Caldwell Guthrie was born in Iowa on 30 November 1863. He was still 6 years old during the 1870 census of Oskaloosa, Maheska, Iowa. He continued the farming tradition. He married Anna Atcheson about 1887. Also a native of Iowa, Anna was the daughter of Stewart and Francis Atcheson. She was born 26 November 1864.

After their marriage, Leonard and Anna settled in Powhatan, Pocahontas, Iowa. By 1910, they had moved all the way to Dallam County, Texas. They returned to the northwest by 1920 settling permanently in Whitman County, Washington. The family included 4 daughters and 4 sons born between 1887 and 1904.

Leonard died on 16 November 1943 in Colfax, Whitman, Washington. His widow Anna died four years later on 27 October 1947. They are buried at Pullman City Cemetery in Whitman County, Washington.
