NOTES:
Beverly Guthrie’s parents, Levi and Elizabeth (Yamons) Guthrie married in St James Northam Parish in Goochland, Goochland County, Virginia. Beverley’s birth location is listed in trees as North Carolina, which may support the identification of a Levi Gutrey receiving a Revolutionary War Pay Voucher from Newbern, Craven, NC, although there are other men of the same name for which that record might apply. We are given 1779 as his DOB. The 1820 census corroborates that by placing him in the 26-44 category, which indicates he was born between 1776-1794.

He married twice. First to Patience Grider at the Adair County Courthouse in Adair County, Kentucky on 19 December 1803. Secondly to Nancy Hamilton on 23 May 1815, also in Adair. He is credited with 1 son and 3 daughters by his first marriage, and 2 daughters by his second.

Beverly Guthrie died on 1 October 1821 in Madison County, Illinois. His administrators were his widow, Nancy, and Dempsey Guthrie, presumably his brother. Probate entries were recorded in Madison County, Illinois, but Beverly Guthrie still owned land in Adair County, KY. It is through the sale of that land that the names of his surviving children are documented. Nancy and her daughters were possibly living in her brother-in-law Dempsey Guthrie’s household during the 1830 census. One daughter was born between 1805-1810 and the rest 1811-1820.

G – 322-3: 1829 – Beverly (Est) (Nancy, Mary, Sally, Patience, Susan) to Joseph Turner – Com. Deed – 57A Owens Cr – IMG182-83

GUTHRIE CHILDREN: 6
Birth Order Unconfirmed: (Son – FNU) (Daughters: Nancy, Mary, Sally, Patience, Susan)
Y-DNA Project Participants: NONE
Autosomal DNA Participants: NONE

CHILD 1: (UNIDENTIFIED SON) GUTHRIE
Born 1805-20 KY – Died Bef. 1829 KY or IL
Marital Status: Unknown

This son was not listed as an heir when the Adair County KY property was sold in 1829. He likely died young.

CHILD 2: NANCY GUTHRIE
Born 1805-14 KY – Died Aft. 1829
Marital Status: Unknown

Since the birth order of the children is unknown, we don’t know if Nancy was the eldest daughter. All of the daughters are listed as “infant heirs” meaning they were underage in 1829 for the sale of their father’s Adair KY property. Since their mother is not listed as a head of household in Illinois, it may be that she and the girls were living in the household of her brother-in-law, Dempsey Guthrie. Especially since he was also named as co-executor of Beverly’s estate.

There are two Madison, IL marriage records for brides named Nancy Guthrie. The first is to John Scanland in 1827. The second is for a Nancy Jane Guthrie to Joseph Robinson in 1849. both marriage performed by WC Ballard, mg.

The Scanland marriage has been attributed to a Nancy Guthrie listed as the daughter of Dempsey Guthrie and his first wife Elizabeth. The second one could be a woman from another generation of Guthries. The last will and testament of Dempsey Guthrie does not list his children’s names. Is it possible that this is the Nancy Guthrie who married John Scanland?

CHILD 3: SUSAN GUTHRIE
Born 1805-1814 KY – Died Aft. 1829
Marital Status: Unknown

Susan is named in the 1829 deed of sale as an “infant heir” of Beverly Guthrie for the sale of his Adair KY property. No further details have been found. She is the last of the daughters listed, but there is no indication of birth order. Based on the census estimates for sisters Mary and Patience, they are most likely the youngest daughters.

CHILD 4: SALLY GUTHRIE
Born 1805-1814 KY – Died Aft. 1829
Marital Status: Unknown

The name Sally is generally found as a nickname for Sarah, but it should not automatically be assumed that was the case. There is no Madison IL marriage record found for a Guthrie woman of either name in the 1820-1850 timeframe.

The 1850 census of Madison, IL lists 8 women named Sally born 1800-1820. Only 4 were born in either KY or IL: Sally Nix, 49, wife of Ambrose, born about 1801, is too old. Sally Davis, 40, born in IL, wife of Charles Davis, was born about 1810. Sally M Ballard, 40, born about 1810, married Ryland Ballard. Sally Widom in Alton, 38, born about 1812, wife of Isaac Widom.

Find-a-Grave lists the wife of Ryland Ballard as Sarah ‘Sally’ Gillham. Madison, IL marriage records confirm the marriage in 1833. Charles Davis married Sarah Vanhooser in 1830 Madison, IL. The wife of Ambrose Nix was Sarah L Judy. No further info found on the Widom marriage, which may be an incorrect spelling.

CHILD 5: MARY GUTHRIE
Born 1816 KY – Aft. 1870 IA
Spouse: George Thomas m. 4 June 1835 Schuyler, IL

Mary Guthrie was the wife of George Thomas. They married on 4 June 1835 in Schuyler, Illinois. This is the same location as the marriage for Patience Guthrie, below. One of Mary’s daughter was named Patience.

This was George Thomas’ second marriage. his first wife was Elizabeth Jackson (1785-1834) by whom he had two daughters, Amy (1821) and Rachel (1826). A year after Elizabeth’s death he remarried to Mary Guthrie. She was then 19 years old to his 39. He was a farmer. They raised a family of 5 boys and 4 girls.

Between 1840 and 1850 they moved from Brown County, IL to Des Moines, Jefferson, IA. By 1856 they had settled in Benton, Wayne, IA. George Thomas died there on 10 Nov 1860 and is buried at Allerton at Hazel Dell Cemetery. Mary’s DOD and location are unknown. One family tree reports it as 1878 in IL.

CHILD 6: PATIENCE GUTHRIE
Born abt. 1818 KY or IL – Died Aft. 1880 IL
Spouse: George Lilburn m.19 Apr 1836 Schuyler, IL

Beverly and one of his wives had a daughter named Patience Guthrie. The 1836 marriage to George Lilburn is the only one at about the right time in IL for a bride of her name. However, descendants remain unverified as there are no Autosomal DNA participants at this time with Guthrie matches. There was a George Lilburn, probably the father of this man, listed on the 1820 census of Wood River, Madison, IL indicating that he was living in the area in Madison, IL when this Patience Guthrie was growing up.

John Hadley was born in Maryland in 1776, of English parents, and when a young man went to Kentucky, where he married a lady by the name of Guthrie. This family came from Virginia and settled in Madison county at a very early date. In 1817 Mr Hadley removed with his family to Illinois, and settled on Pleasant Ridge, in this township, June 20th of that year. He was a volunteer in the ranging service of 1812. He reared a family of children, who grew up and settled around him. Of his sons, James, Dempsey, and William, only one, William, is now living. Dempsey died here, and James died in Missouri, whence he moved a few years ago. William Hadley was born in Kentucky in 1806, and is well known to many of the citizens of the county. He is a Methodist minister, and was among the early preachers in Madison. At present he is living at Carbondale in this State, while members of his family are still residents of this county.

Dempsey Guthrie ,who settled about two miles northeast of Collinsville, operated a horse-mill that was in existence in 1818.
