Various trees list Eveline Guthrie’s birth as about 1818 or 1825. Her husband Francis H Hughes was born about 1826, so it is likely she was closer to his age. This couple married 8 Aug 1847 in Jasper County, IA, but I do not find them in the 1850 census. They are credited with three children born between 1848 and 1850.

Eveline was presumably deceased by 1856 when Francis remarried to Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Tyrell on 27 Nov 1856 in Marion County, Iowa. That year, daughter Lexa A Hughes, 8, is found living in the home of her Guthrie grandparents in Des Moines, Jasper, Iowa during the 1856 State Census. Son Henry Clay Hughes, 6, is living with the William and Clarissa Cowman family in Perry, Marion, Iowa that year. No sign of middle child George Hughes.

During the 1860 census of Avon, Coffey, Kansas Territory, Francis, Betsy, and Henry Clay Hughes are together.

Between 1860 and 1910, this family seems to have made it a habit of avoiding the census taker. Anyone find them listed? A direct descendant and owner of the Hughes / Strobe Family Tree on Ancestry mentions in a letter written by Francis H Hughes’ granddaughter Lillian that her father Henry Clay Hughes had seven step mothers. This would certainly account for the difficulty of locating Francis in census records.

CHILD 1: ALEXA ANN HUGHES aka “LEXA”
5 May 1848 IA – 3 Oct 1946 CO
Spouse: Samuel Freeman Noel m. 22 Oct 1866 in Jasper County, Iowa, USA

Alexa Ann Hughes was the eldest daughter of Eveline (Guthrie) and Frances Hughes. She was born in Marion County, Iowa on 5 May 1848. Two siblings were added to the family over the next couple of years, but by 1856 the family is separated. Presumably, her mother Eveline had died. Lexa is found living with her grandparents during the 1856 State Census of Des Moines, Jasper, Iowa.

She married Samuel Freeman Noel in 1867 Iowa. They lived in Plate, Union, Iowa during the 1870 census, and moved to Mills County. Samuel and Lexa were farmers. Samuel died in 1908. Afterward, Lexa moved to Colorado where her son George Noel had settled Lexa lived until 3 Oct 1946. She is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Lamar, Prowers, Colorado.

CHILD 3: HENRY CLAY HUGHES
Born 1850 IA – Died 27 Jan 1920 OR
Spouse: Catherine Malinda ‘Katie’ Hart m. 1885 Washington, USA

Henry Clay Hughes was born in or about 1850 in Iowa, the youngest son of Evaline (Guthrie) Hughes and Francis H Hughes. The family was separated by 1856. Evaline has not been found in the records and is presumed dead by that time. Henry Clay Guthrie was at that time living with his maternal aunt, Clarissa (Guthrie) Cowman and family. By 1860, his father Francis had remarried, and at 10 years of age Henry was living with his father and stepmother, Betsy in Avon, Coffey, Kansas.

The Hughes / Strobe Family Tree on Ancestry, created by a direct descendant of Henry Clay Hughes mentions that Henry had seven stepmothers. He also ran away from home at the age of 14, although his daughter Lillian did not state the reason for it in the family letter. Living in the Kansas Territory, Henry Clay Hughes worked as an Indian Scout. He lost an eye at some point, but it is unknown when.

By the 1880s, Henry Clay Hughes had journeyed from Kansas to Washington state where he was working as a foreman on the Turner ranch near Davenport. A wedding announcement was published in a local paper for 15 June 1885 naming Mr Henry Hughes and Mrs Kate Hart in Spokane.

By the time of the 1910 census, the family had moved to Oregon. Henry and Kate had 4 sons and 1 daughter between 1886 and 1899. Henry died on 27 January 1920 in Marcola, Lane, Oregon. Katie survived him by 17 years. She died in Dallas, Polk, Oregon on 11 July 1937
