Sailing from Plymouth on 12 Oct 1852 aboard the Minerva, William Ranking travelled New Zealand to be a shepherd for John Deans, who was also a passenger. Deans had originally immigrate ten years prior from the same town in Scotland. William married in 1881 to Margaret Gibbs Grant, a widow with one son who assumed the Rankin surname. He bought a farm in Palmerston (South Island) which became a dairy. The couple had no additional children. William died at Palmerston North, new Zealand on 1 April 1904. He is buried at Terrace End Cemetery.
