NOTES:
During 1777, the year John Guthrie, is said to have been born, his father was a militiaman in Cumberland County, PA. The family was not yet living in Virginia. John moved with his parents and siblings to Fauquier, VA and later Woodford, KY. ‘American Guthrie and Allied Families’ lists only one marriage to a Miss Tiller.
He married Margaret Tiller on 1 Sep 1814 in Franklin County, Kentucky, but the presence of a John Guthrie in Woodford, KY in the 1810 census with a wife, 2 sons, and a daughter suggest that the marriage may not have been his first. There is a Woodford, KY marriage between Molly Bridgeford and John Guthrie dated 29 Nov 1802 in Woodford, KY. Family trees identify a daughter, Nancy for that couple.
“The records of Scott County, KY show that October 27, 1811, he purchased land from Louis Palmer, adjoining those of Adam Montgomery, on the waters of the Elkhorn, in said county. He sold a tract of land in Woodford County, KY, situated on the North Leestown road to William Risk.” (AGAF,p.273) Note that Adam Montgomery was John’s brother-in-law married to Mildred Guthrie in 1810. This deed has not been found indexed in the Scott, KY records, although it appears what remains of Volume A was reconstructed after a fire/damage.
On 1 Sep 1814, John Guthrie married Margaret Tiller in Franklin County, Kentucky. They had one daughter born in 1817, Sarah Ann Lucinda Guthrie.

Frankfort, Kentucky
Does this notice to debtors and creditors in the wake of a John Guthrie death apply to this John Guthrie? Please note that several online trees accidentally list the 1848 death date of John’s elder brother, Thomas Guthrie, Jr, as his own.
There is no sign of John Guthrie being listed as a Head of Household in Kentucky during the 1820 census. He would be presumed dead by that date, however, there is a sale of Woodford County, KY property to William Risk dated 10 Sep 1829 to consider. It is the only land entry found in that county for anyone named John Guthrie. It is dated 10 Sep 1829 and identifies him as “John Guthrie of Woodford Kentucky”. Only one of his brothers had a known son named John, but he was born in 1830. The only possibility would be one of John’s own unidentified sons with Molly Bridgeford born between 1801-1810.
Did Margaret (Tiller) Guthrie remarry after John Guthrie’s death? Evidence suggests that she did. There is a Franklin, KY marriage of a Margaret Guthrie to William W Stephen dated 31 Mar 1828. (Source: Franklin County KY Records: Marriages 1794-1850 IMG 18 of 50) That date would fit if the above deed was John’s son rather than John himself. Margaret Stephen appears to have had several children by her second marriage. She died sometime between the 1860 and 1870 censuses.

CHILD 1: JOHN GUTHRIE JR aka JOHN ‘JACK’ GUTHRIE (Speculative Identity Match)
Born: 1803-1810 KY – Died: Unknown @ Age: Unknown
Speculative Dates – Born: 1 Jan 1807 KY – Died: 19 May 1870 CA @ Age: 1870
Spouse 1: Elizabeth Wheat m. 28 Dec 1826 in Woodford County, Kentucky, USA
Spouse 2: Fairvilla Riddell (Speculative Placement) m. about 1828-1830
Guthrie Children: Yes
Y-DNA Project Participants: Speculatively, Yes
Autosomal DNA Participants: None
No longer unidentified, this John Guthrie’s relationship to the family is proven in a letter of consent to marry by his grandfather, Thomas Guthrie Sr, acting as his guardian and permitting a marriage license to be issued for John Guthrie and Elizabeth Wheat. Dated 14 Dec 1826 and witnessed by Robert Taylor and William Risk. Consent by Elizabeth’s mother, Elizabeth Wheat, is also given, dated 28 Dec 1826, and was witnessed by Richard Taylor and William Risk.
When men of this era remarried, children of the first marriage frequently remained with grandparents or other relatives, which may account for John Guthrie Jr living in Woodford County, KY while his father and stepmother were living in Franklin County, KY. This could also have happened after John Guthrie Sr’s death.
So it is likely to be John Guthrie Jr in Woodford County, KY who sold property to William Risk on 10 Sep 1829, which is the only “John Guthrie” entry in Woodford County. There is one John Guthrie listed as a Head of Household in Woodford, KY during the 1830 census: 2M 20-29, 1F 20-29, 1F under 5. Slaves: 1F 20-23, 1F under 10. The second male of 20-29 could potentially be his brother.
This family is not found in Woodford County, KY in 1840.
Speculatively, this could be the John ‘Jack’ Guthrie who married Fairvilla Riddell. YDNA matching shows a link to GFG5, so the family group is correct. Jack Guthrie was born 1 Jan 1807, which fits the census range of 1803-1810. See the John ‘Jack’ Guthrie / Fairvilla Riddell family page. It is known that Jack was married previously to Fairvilla and had 1 daughter with that wife, but the name of the wife was not documented. It makes sense that she was Elizabeth Wheat.

The 1810 census for John Guthrie (Sr) tells us that there were 2 sons and 1 daughter in the household born between 1801 and 1810. Since John Guthrie and Molly Bridgeford were married in November of 1802, that range is narrowed to 1803-1810.
This son may be the second man of 20-29 years of age living in the household of John Guthrie (Jr) in 1830 Woodford, Kentucky.
No further details known.

CHILD 3: NANCY J GUTHRIE
Born: 7 Mar 1809 KY – Died: 6 May 1845 KY @ Age: 36

Autosomal DNA Participants: NONE
Born in 1809, Nancy J Guthrie was most likely the youngest of the three children by Molly (Bridgeford) Guthrie. It is unknown whether she lived with her father and stepmother or remained in Woodford, KY with her grandparents or other relatives. She was 18 at the time of her marriage to James Pulliam Sargent on 3 Sep 1827 in Woodford County, KY.
They had five children born between 1828 and 1835. Online trees list the birth location as being Scott County, Kentucky. No Sargent property records found in Scott County, KY or Franklin County, KY.
James Sargent died in 1837. Online trees list Franklin County, but no death data or newspaper notices found. Same for Nancy who died in 1845. Death and burial places unconfirmed.

CHILD 4: SARAH ANN LUCINDA GUTHRIE
Born: 14 Aug 1817 KY – Died: 15 Aug 1866 MO @ Age: 49
Spouse: William Lavell m. 1 Sep 1842 in Franklin County, Kentucky, USA
Lavell Children: Yes
Y-DNA Project Participants: N/A – Female Guthrie
Autosomal DNA Participants: NONE
Sarah Ann Lucinda Guthrie was the only daughter of John Guthrie by his second marriage to Margaret Tiller. She was born on 14 Aug 1817 in Franklin County, Kentucky. Her father is believed to have died about 1819. Her mother seems to have remarried to William Stephen in 1828 Franklin County, KY, so it looks like they may have remained in the same county during that time. During the 1830 census, Sarah Ann Lucinda Guthrie would have been about 13 years of age. Her mother would have been married for about 2 years to William Stephen. The 1830 census of his household in Northern Division, Franklin, KY shows:
1F 40-49 (presumably Margaret); 1M 30-39 (William Stephens); 1F 15-19; 1F 5-9; 1M under 5. There is no female child listed in the 10-15 category. Either the age is listed incorrectly, or Sarah Ann Lucinda Guthrie was not living with her mother in 1830.
On 1 Sep 1842, she married William Lavell in Franklin County, Kentucky. (Marriage Record not found.) They were living in District 2 of Franklin County, KY in 1850. William was listed as a Miller in the Grain-Mill Products industry. During this census Sarah Ann Lucinda Lavell is listed as ‘Lucinda’ with a transcription error ‘Juranda’. Between the 1850 and 1860 censuses, the family moved from Kentucky to Missouri settling in St Ferdinand, St Louis County, Missouri. At this time, William is listed as a Farmer with $4000 worth of real estate and $300 personal estate. His wife is listed as ‘Sarah’.
Sarah Ann Lucinda (Guthrie) Lavell died on 15 August 1866 presumably as a result of childbirth. Her infant Henry Lavell was born 15 August 1866 and died the next day. Her husband died the following year on 6 Oct 1867. They are buried at Cold Water Cemetery in St Louis County, Missouri.
