NOTES:

Frances Guthrie is listed as a daughter of the widowed Manerva Guthrie in the 1860 census of Cobb County, Georgia, and is presumably the last child of Henry Guthrie who died in 1855. Frances married at about 16 years of age to Andrew Jackson Nation.

Jackson was a farmer. He enlisted at a young age, 17, joining the CSA infantry, 19th Alabama Regiment, Company B as a private under Capt. McKinzie. The until was mustered out of Corinth, Mississippi. He was captured in 1863 at Shelbyville, TN, carried to Fort Delaware and paroled in 1865.

The couple lived in Blount County, Alabama. They had 6 children, 3 of whom died in their infancy or early childhood. Frances also died at only 31 years old in Blount, AL on 24 March 1885. Her husband remained a widower. Their daughter Bertha remained with him at home until his death on 14 May 1922. He was 78.

William Henry Nation was born in Blount County, Alabama living there for the first three decades of his life. He married at 20 to Susan Emma Lafon on 10 Jan 1892. She was two years older, a daughter of Isaac J. LaFon and wife Harriet Urana Reese. During the early years of their marriage, William worked as a day laborer, but at some point he also acquired a college education. He became a bookkeeper for the First Avenue Coal and Lumber Company, where he remained for 25 years. His role change over the years to that of sales, but he remained working in the lumber industry also working for the Simmons Lumber Company Springville, and Johnson’s Lumber Company.

By 1910, Susan had given birth to 10 children, with 1 daughter to be born in 1912. Two of these died in their infancy or early childhood: Roy Clifford Nation (1892-1962), Guy Manson Nation (1894-1989), Leo Wesley Nation (1896-1984), Eva Nation (1897-bef.1910), Ira Jefferson Nation (1899-1987), Ora L Nation (1901-1999), Fay Nation (1904-1911), Ina Jewell Nation (1907-2002), Rex J Nation (1909-1993), and Amy L Nation (1912-1979).

Susan was only 53 at her death on 10 Feb 1924 at a local infirmary in Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama. The family had settled there by 1910. William remained a widower. Some of his children continued to live with them. On the day of his 78th birthday, 10 Jan 1950, William suffered a stroke from which he never recovered. He died at home on 19 March 1950. He was 78. Both William and Susan are buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama, USA.

Born in Blount County, Alabama in 1879, Bertha Nation remained in the family home until the time of her father’s death in 1922. She had no official occupation or profession, but no doubt served as a homemaker for her widowed father. She married John Glen Harris when she was 44. The ceremony took place on 6 Jan 1924 in Blount County. John had been previously married to Ida Yaw (1878-1923) by whom he had two sons: Green Calloway Harris (b.1896) and Noah L Harris (b.1906).

John worked in several occupations during his lifetime. Farm laborer, farmer, flask builder at a pipe plant, and as a pattern maker at a pipe shop. He was 50 at the time of his marriage to Bertha. They had no children of their own. They lived on Mountain Drive in Tarrant City until John died on Saturday, 6 Feb 1932. The Birmingham City Directory of 1934 lists: HARRIS, Bertha (did John G) r8141 1st av s. She made her home with relatives, the G. N. Ellis family, until her own heath failed.

On Thursday, 23 Mar 1950, The Southern Democrat announced: Mrs Bertha Harris of Birmingham, who made her home here in former years, critically ill at Hilman Hospital. She died 30 June 1850 at 71 years of age.

Florence M Nation was the youngest of Jack and Frances’ children, born in Alabama on 10 July 1881. Her mother died when she was about 4 years of age. During the 1900 census, she was a student living at home with her father and sister.

Her marriage to Richard Ellis Jolley took place in Blount County, Alabama on 10 July 1904. Florence died that same year on 8 November. No obituary found. She is buried in Antioch Baptist Cemetery in Liberty, Blount County. The widower remarried to Mrs Willie Mae Cooper in 1946.
