NOTES:

The second child of Shadrick Guthry & Malinda Badley was born 31 August 1809, but his birth location is unclear. Based on what we think we know about the family emigration from SC, his birthplace should probably be in Kentucky. Alternate locations based on census reports are the Indiana Territory and Illinois.

William’s parents had moved from Kentucky to Mississippi during the late 1830s. He was already an adult at the time of his mother’s death. Evidently, he never left Kentucky or had returned to the Kentucky / Tennessee area where he first married Mary Ann Beasley and later her sister, Etheldra. His wives were the daughters of William F and Mary Ann (Fare) Beasley whose family is enumerated in Humphreys County, Tennessee in 1820, 1830, and 1840. Mr Beasley died there in 1845.

William Guthrie and Mary Ann Beasley were reportedly married about 1832. Mary Ann’s birth year is given as 1818, which would have made her only 14 at the time of her marriage. Census records suggest that her birth year was probably 1811-1815. They had 4 children prior to Mary Ann’s death about 1838. They may have already been living in Mississippi at this time, which means he would have returned to TN to marry Etheldra Ruth Beasley on 25 or 27 Feb 1841. Their marriage is recorded in Benton County, TN, which is adjacent to Humphries County, TN.

After their marriage, William and Etheldra settled in Mississippi where the earliest of their children were born. Son Jeremiah Guthrie, born in 1852, is the first listing his birthplace in Texas. The family moved to Lavaca and later Bell County, Texas. William died in Killeen, Bell, Texas on 11 Mar 1891. His widow died there 13 Dec 1904. Both are buried at the Killeen City Cemetery.

Born 1833KY – 1909TX
Spouse: Hinton Hector Vick m. 31 Jul 1851 in Lafayette, Mississippi, USA

Margaret Ann Guthrie was born 12 November 1833 in Kentucky or Mississippi. The closest evidence is the Pension Application written by her younger brother Shadrick Guthrie who indicated that his birthplace was Bowling Green, KY. The family reportedly moved to Mississippi by 1837. In 1850, her family was living in Lafayette County, Mississippi, and the following year, at age 17, Margaret married Hinton Hector Vick, a son of Richard and Mary Vick. They were in Pontotoc, MS in 1850. They made the move to Lavaca County, Texas and were living there by the 1860 census. Hinton was a farmer. They had 11 children. Hinton died on 3 July 1893 and Margaret on 7 March 1909 in Sweet Home, Lavaca, Texas. They are buried at Pilot Grove Cemetery in Yoakum, Lavaca, Texas.

Spouse: Sarah Margaret Havens m. 3 Aug 1867 Bell County, Texas, USA

John Fair Humphrey Guthrie was born in September of 1843 in Mississippi and died in Runnels County, Texas on 3 Sep 1908. Find-a-Grave lists his ‘F’ initial as Francisco, but some trees list it as Fair. No original documentation found either way.

According to a family bio shared by Ancestry User KeetchBrothers, John came with his parents to Texas in 1850 in an oxen wagon settling near Sweet Home, Lavaca, Texas. John served in the Texas Rangers during the Civil War returning home in 1866. He was a farmer and an ordained Deacon in the Primitive Baptist Church. They resided in Bell County, Texas and produced a large family. Maggie’s obituary credits her with 8 children, ‘all of whom’ were living at the time of her death. Find-a-Grave lists nine. Some trees include one other son, their first, who died in infancy, included below.

On 1 August 1867, when he was 24, John married Sarah Margaret “Maggie” Havens, a daughter of Thomas Tolbert and Louisa A. (Crawford) Havens. Maggie survived her husband by 19 years. She died of dropsy on 30 April 1927 in Wellington, Hollingsworth, Texas. She is buried in Quail Cemetery in Hollingsworth County while John is buried in Runnels County at Counts Cemetery.

CHILD 7: SILAS RIDDLE GUTHRIE

Spouse: Salina Culpepper
m. 13 Oct 1867 in Lavaca County, Texas, USA

Son Silas Riddle Guthrie was born in Mississippi on 25 Sep 1845, and was listed on the 1850 census with his parents and siblings in Lafayette County, Mississippi. They were living in Lavaca County, Texas by 1860.

According to his obituary, Silas Riddle Guthrie “was a native Texan, having been born near Gonzales. He had lived near Alpine for the past 30 years and was a pioneer ranchman of this section of the southwest. He was affectionately known as “Uncle Gid”. He located here just after the arrival of the railroads through this part of the country and his fund of stories and reminiscences of the early days of the trail was large and interesting. He had many times driven cattle across country to the Kansas and Nebraska markets and feeding grounds when the trip occupied many months. He made 21 such trips with his herds, one a year for 21 years. His outdoor life had made him sturdy and robust and he always enjoyed good health. “Uncle Gid” was very popular and was known to every cattleman in Texas. He was a member of both the Texas Cattle Raisers’ association and the Panhandle and Southwestern association. Though frequently importuned to accept public office in his home county, Mr Guthrie always refused nomination for any public office. He always replied that he had enough to do to take care of his own business, and he devoted himself strictly to his own affairs, although he always showed interest in politics and exercised his right to vote for the men he thought best equipped and qualified for office.” (Excerpt from Obituary published in the El Paso Herald, Monday, 6 Dec 1915 – Newspapers.com)

Silas Riddle Guthrie married Selena Culpepper in Lavaca County, Texas on 13 Oct 1867. They had one daughter. “Uncle Gid” died on 6 Dec 1915 in Brewster, Texas. His widow lived another 5 years. Her death occurred on 16 July 1920 in El Paso, Texas. They are buried at Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine, Brewster, Texas.

Spouse: William Murphey Copeland m. 17 June 1869 Falls, Texas, USA

This very geographical name, San Francisco California Guthrie was shortened to ‘Callie’. She was born on 15 September 1859 in Jackson, Mississippi prior to the family’s move to Lavaca, Texas. She appeared on the Lafayette, Mississippi census of 1850, but was listed as an 8 year old in 1860 Halletsville, Lavaca, TX. Callie’s marriage to William Murphy Copeland took place when she was 19 years old in Falls County, TX on 17 June 1869. He was a farmer. They were in Bell County during the 1880 census, Williamson County in 1900, Motley County in 1910, and Hall in early 1920 before settling in Childress for their final days.

The 1900 census indicates Callie gave birth to 10 children, all of whom were still living at that time. William and Callie were together for over fifty years. He died 28 January 1920 in Childress, Texas. Callie lived for another 15 years. The 1930 census shows her as 81 and living in Childress, Texas with her daughter Minnie (Copeland) Ellison and son-in-law, George W. Ellison. CHILD 10: JEREMIAH PEARSALL GUTHRIE
Born 1852 TX – Died 1926 TX
Spouse 1: Joe Ann Sands m. 13 Jan 1874 in Bell County, Texas
Spouse 2: Mattie J McKenzie m. 28 Jun 1891 in Bell County, Texas

Jeremiah Pearsall Guthrie was the first of the Guthrie children born in Texas. His birth date is 11 April 1852. He was 21 at the time of his first marriage on 13 Jan 1874 in Bell County, Texas to Joe Ann Sands, the daughter of Charles G and Catharine (Cassinger) Sands. Unknown if this Sands family has any ancestral ties to John Sands who married Catharine Guthrie (1690RI-1769NY), daughter of Robert Guthrie and Anna Alcock of Block Island, Rhode Island. Joe Ann and Jeremiah had 4 children: Laura Lee, John Camel, Charles Edward, and Anna Maude. Jeremiah, called Jerry for short, was a farmer. Joe Ann died when she was only 23 years old on 24 Oct 1881. Her body was interred at Cedar Knob Cemetery in Salado, Bell County, Texas.

Jerry and Joe Ann’s descendants include grandson Woodrow Wilson “Woody” Guthrie (1912-1967), a singer-songwriter and political activist. His iconic folksong, written in 1940, is “This Land is Your Land.

Ten years after his wife’s death, on 28 June 1891, Jeremiah Pearsall Guthrie married Martha J McKenzie nee Runnels, the widow of Robert E McKenzie. They had two daughters, Cally Etta and Mollie McKenzie. Jerry and Mattie initially lived in or near Killeen, Bell County, Texas, where their sons Geddis and Claude were born. They were living in the Oklahoma Territory during the births of their other children, Jeff and Ethel. The 1910 Census shows them living in Okemah Ward 1, Okfuskee, Oklahoma where Jerry was working as a dairy farmer and renting their home. He was listed as a general farmer in 1920 Hazilp, Creek, Oklahoma with just J P, 67, and Mattie, 63, listed in the household. Mattie died in Oklahoma sometime before 1926. Jerry moved to Amarillo, Texas where his daughter Laura Moore, and son John Guthrie were living.

The Okfuskee County News, on Thursday, 7 Jan 1909 noted, “J.P. Guthrie, father of C.E. Guthrie, clerk of the district court, was here this week visiting and looking over the country. He may locate to Okfuskee county.”

The Okemah Ledger on Thursday, 18 April 1912 posted that “J.P. guthrie moved up to his cattle ranch near Bristow, Okla., this week, and will spend the summer there tending his cattle.”

The Hobart Daily Republican, on Wednesday, 30 June 1920, mentioned that “J.P. Guthrie of Granite was in the city today to take the examination for cream dealer’s license.”

Here’s a clue regarding Mattie’s DOD. She was alive the night prior to Monday, 16 Jan 1922 when the Kingfisher Daily News published: “Mrs J P Guthrie who has been visiting at the W A Clift home near Cashion, left last evening for her home in Wakita.”

The Okfuskee County News of Thursday, May 3, 1923 published a brief announcement on page 5:
“J. P. Guthrie, of Olive, in Creek county was in Okemah the first of the week visiting his son, C.E. Guthrie, and looking after business matters. Mr Guthrie formerly lived in Okemah.”

On Friday, February 26, 1926, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram published the following article:

Jerry died on 26 Dec 1926 in Amarillo, Potter, Texas.

CHILD 14: JEFFERSON DAVIS GUTHRIE
Born 1861 TX – Died 1941 TX
Spouse 1: Emily Ann Williams m. abt. 1883 in Texas
Spouse 2: Mattie Elizabeth Jordan m. 3 Mar 1903 in Bell County, Texas

Jefferson Davis Guthrie was born in Texas on 14 July 1861 and presumably named for the president of the Confederate States of America. The Confederacy had officially formed just months earlier on 8 Feb 1861. Jeff was raised in Bell County, Texas where he was listed with the family with his parents on the 1880 census. He was the only child remaining at home at the time, then 18 and working as a farm laborer.

Around 1883-95 he married Emily Ann Williams, presumably in Bell County, TX. She was a daughter of William Williams and Ann Elizabeth Millard, born in Walnut Tree, Yell County, Arkansas on 11 Feb 1866. They had moved to Texas and were living in Burnet County, Texas during the 1880 census. After their marriage they lived in Killeen, Bell County, Texas. Jeff worked as a blacksmith and farmer. Emily Ann was the mother of five: Shadrick Marion Guthrie, Anne Lou Guthrie, Ira Nugent Guthrie, Zettie Sybil Guthrie, and Susan Rebecca ‘Reba’ Guthrie. Jeff’s wife Emily Ann died on 1 Nov 1901 in Killeen, Bell, Texas.

Two years later, Jeff Guthrie chose to remarry. His second wife was Mattie Elizabeth Jordan, a daughter of James Winston Jordan and Mary Elizabeth Horn. She was about 24 at the time to his 41. They were parents to 7 children: Mattie May Guthrie, Vivian Estelle Guthrie, William Earnest Guthrie, Alma Lea Guthrie, Franklin Dean Guthrie, Joe Newman Guthrie, and Jay Dee Guthrie. Note Jay Dee’s birth name was Bettie P Guthrie and the altered name is noted on an amended birth certificate with a corrected DOB of 5 Apr instead of 6 Apr 1919.

Between 1900 and 1940, the family lived in various Texas counties: Bell (1900), Jones (1910), Burnet (1920), Bell (1930), Coryell (1935) and Bell (1940). Jefferson Davis Guthrie died on 2 July 1941 in Killeen, Bell, Texas. He was 79 years, 11 months, and 18 days of age. His widow Mattie lived for another 18 years. Her death came on 18 Nov 1959 in Belton, Bell, Texas. She was 80 years old.
