NOTES:

James Henry Guthrie was born on 7 January 1843 in Yalobusha, Mississippi. The family was living in Lafayette County in 1850 during the census. “Jas H Guthrie” was listed as a 7 year old along with his parents and siblings John (15) Martha J (8), Mary A R (4) and Randsom J (9 months). John Richard Mazy was his half-brother by his mother Ruah Ann (Roberts) Mazy.

The Confederate States of America formed at the Montgomery Convention in February of 1861. Jim’s home state of Mississippi was one of seven along with South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and (in March) Texas to break its bonds with the United States of America. Between May and July of 1861, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina joined them. James H Guthrie enlisted in in the army of the Confederacy when he was 19 years of age on 20 April 1862 in Grenada, Mississippi signing up for a period of 3 years. He served in Company A, 29th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers, initially as a private, and later being promoted to sergeant. He was wounded in October of 1862 being absent from the Company Muster Roll at that time. The records show he was not a prisoner of war during his service. His service extended to a period of about 4 years and 2 months in the infantry.

Jim married during the war years in Lafayette County, MS on 19 Jan 1865 to Martha Wilson. They removed to Louisiana during the late 1880s, and then to Fannin County, Texas. The 1900 census of Fannin, TX reveals that Martha had given birth to 13 children, only 8 of whom were still living. He died in Bonham, Fannin, Texas on 10 August 1905 at the age of 62. Martha lived another 20 years. On 8 Sep 1913, she applied for a Confederate Widow’s Pension (File 23004). She died in Bonham on 18 June 1925. They are buried at White Rock Cemetery in Fannin County, Texas.

Aron H Guthrie was born in Oxford, Lafayette, MS on 25 January 1872, about 100 years after grandfather Shadrick Guthry, an example of how large families can extend the length of a generation or two. He was listed as “Oran” (8) during the 1880 census there. The family moved from Mississippi to Texas where they settled in Fannin County. Aron married Sarah ‘Ada’ Williams, a daughter of Richard and Betty (Taylor) Williams, on 5 August 1897. They had one daughter, Ollie Mae Guthrie, born in 1898. Arron worked as a farmer and later as a Fannin County police officer and a deputy sheriff.

The ceiling of Aron and Ada’s East 9th street home caught fire on Wednesday, 6 Aug 1924 about 3pm. The dry climate and extreme heat in Bonham, TX that day contributed to a very heavy loss. The inside of the house and most of its contents were destroyed by the fire. Their rented home was the property of Dr John Nevill. Torrential rain followed ruining many of the items neighbors had managed to remove from the house. “Miss Lou Williams and Miss Ola mae Guthrie, who lived at the house, work down town, and their loss, as to wearing apparel and furniture, was almost irreparable, since they were not able to reach the house in time to save their effects, and things that were of greater value to them than they could be to anyone else.” (The Bonham Daily Favorite, Bonham, TX – Thu., 7 Aug 1924, p.4 – Newspapers.com)

Aron and Ada died within a few months of each other in 1942. Ada died 31 Jan and Aaron on 9 Nov. They were buried at Arledge Ridge Cemetery in Bomham, Fannin, Texas.

Twenty years later, the family was already living in Fannin County, Texas. At 21, he was still living at home and working full-time as a farmer. Bob married two years later to Beulah Whitfield Braddy on 2 Nov 1902. They had two sons and four daughters born between 1903 and 1919. Josie was still single and living with the family, listed as a 17 year old student. By this time the family had already made their move to Fannin County, Texas. She married the following year to Charles Marion Robertson on 15 December 1901. The couple had 3 sons and 3 daughters. Charlie completed his WWI Draft Registration card. He was a 35 year old farmer at the time with a stout build, medium height, light brown hair and gray eyes. Charlie apparently suffered from angina. He had a mild attack at 4am on Sept 4, 1924, but died on the 11th. He was only 41.

CHILD 10: MACK CAM GUTHRIE
Born 1884 MS – 1937 TX

Spouse 1: Enna Charity Stevens m. about 1910 in Texas
Spouse: Irene Emma Watson m. 18 April 1914 in Windom, Fannin, Texas, USA

None of his records indicate whether “Mack Cam” was a shorter version of a longer legal name. Mack was born on Christmas Eve, 24 Dec 1884 in Oxford, Lafayette, Mississippi. His family moved to Fannin County, Texas before the 1900 census. He was then 16. Unlike the siblings listed around him, he apparently did not attend school. The others have between 2 – 4 years of schooling. Mack was initially working on the farm. When he was 21, his father died. The 1910 census shows him living with Emma Guthrie, indicating they were married that year. This is apparently Enna Charity Stevens (1887-1983). They had 1 son, apparently divorcing prior to 1914.

Mack married again on 18 Apr 1914 in Windom, Fannin, Texas to Irene Emma Watson (1896-1973). Mack and Emma had two children, a son and daughter. Mack’s WWI Draft Registration Card describes him as being tall with black hair and blue eyes. Mack took a job as a machinist with the railroad, so the family moved around within Texas over the next couple of decades. Mack died 25 June 1937 after suffering from heat exhaustion. He was buried at White Rock Cemetery

Born 1886 MS – Died 1968 TX
Spouse: Harry Olan Maxwell m. 10 July 1916 in Fannin County, Texas, USA

She was 23 and working as a laborer on the home farm ten years later. By this time her father had died, and only her younger brother Gary, and mother Martha were living at home.

Emma married Harry Olan Maxwell on 10 July 1916 when she was 29 years old. He was 44 and had a daughter from a previous marriage, Marion. They lived in Bonham, Fannin, Texas. Harry was a shoemaker and owned his own shoe shop. They had one son, James Henry Maxwell, apparently named after his maternal grandfather, born in 1919.

Harry Maxwell died on 24 July 1930 at the age of 58.

CHILD 12: GARY THOMAS GUTHRIE
Born 1888 LA – Died 1962 Texas
Spouse: Elma Virginia Pike m. 2 October 1912 in Fannin County, Texas, USA

Gary Thomas Guthrie was the youngest son of the family. He was born on 10 December 1888 in Arcadia, Bienville, Louisiana, presumably when the family was on their way to Texas. He was 11 years old and a student in 1900. Just 5 years later, his father died, and by the time he was 21, Gary was the man of the house. He was listed as the Head of Household for the 1910 census, with his sister Emma, and mother Martha living with him.

Gary married just two years later when he was 23 to Elma Virginia Pike. They had two sons. He took work as a fireman for the railroad. His WWI Draft Registration card describes him as tall with dark hair and blue eyes. Between 1920 and 1930, they moved from Texas to Yuma, Arizona. Gary was promoted to Railroad Foreman / Engineer. His age made him eligible for the WWII Draft. That car describes his complexion as ruddy, with brown hair, blue eyes, and his height as 6’2″ tall. They remained in Yuma through the 1950 Census.

On 1 Sep 1962, Gary Thomas Guthrie died of a heart attack. He had been living in Bonham, Fannin, Texas again for 6 years prior to his death. He was 73. His burial place is Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham. Elma (Pike) Guthrie survived her husband by 15 years. She died in Spring Valley, San Diego, California on 3 September 1977 at the age of 85. Her remains were returned to Texas.
