17-C: Charles Guthrie & Isabella Lyall
Guthrie Family Group 17 – Branch C
CHARLES GUTHRIE 1781SCT-1857SCT and ISABELLA LYALL
in Tannadice and Brechin, Angus, Scotland

Charles Guthrie’s lineage is tied to Guthrie Family Group 17 through family tradition and documentation beginning with David Guthrie and Janet Stewart in Cookston and Menmuir as follows:
David Guthrie / Janet Stewart > Alexander Guthrie (I) / Anne Ker > Alexander Guthrie (II) / Jean Wyllie > Alexander Guthrie (III) / Barbara Suttie > Charles Guthrie > Isabella Lyall
Like the Guthries in previous generations, Charles Guthrie was a farmer. He married Isabella Lyall, the daughter of farmer James Lyall. They lived in Tannadice, Angus, Scotland and produced a family of nine children born between 1810 and 1823. By the time of the 1841 census, Charles and Isabella are living apart. Charles remained in Coul, while Isabella and her children were living at the Mains of Fintry and later in Liff and Benvie. Isabella died in 1851 at the age of 67 due to the “nature of decay”. Six years later, at 76, Charles Guthrie was found dead in bed, apparently having died in his sleep, on 30 October 1857.
