UNGROUPED GUTHRIE FAMILIES

Definition of “Ungrouped Family Status” :
Guthrie families without historical, documented, or genetic proof of a lineal relationship to an established Guthrie Family Group. Y-DNA testing by Guthrie men is needed to conclusively prove paternal line ancestry.

ABNER GUTHRIE – of Carteret County, North Carolina
Summary: Born 1791-1800, died before 1840 in Carteret County, NC; spouse Esther Royal (m. 1818); children John Wallace, William Henry, Joseph Royal, Abner Parker; speculative link to Daniel Guthrie & Mary Little, but no documentation; Y-DNA and autosomal kits noted, with non-Guthrie paternal DNA via maternal line.

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: Carteret County, in coastal North Carolina, was a hub for maritime trade and fishing in the early 19th century, shaped by its position near the Outer Banks and involvement in the slave trade and agriculture (e.g., rice, naval stores). Guthries in this region often had Scots-Irish roots, migrating from Ulster or Scotland during the 1700s amid economic hardship and religious persecution, seeking land grants under colonial systems. Abner’s lifetime overlapped with the War of 1812, where coastal NC faced British raids, potentially disrupting family life and economy; edge cases include misattributions in trees (e.g., “John Abner” without sources), highlighting genealogy challenges like incomplete census records pre-1840. Implications for descendants include potential ties to broader NC Guthrie clusters if Y-DNA mismatches resolve through big-Y testing, and cultural heritage in seafaring communities affected by hurricanes and isolation.

Ungrouped Y-DNA Kit (+FF):
Abner Guthrie > William Henry Guthrie 1820NC-1880NC > Bartlett Guthrie 1865-1910 (GGP)
Note: This man was born to a female Guthrie. His paternal DNA is of non-Guthrie origin, but his maternal line descends from Abner Guthrie and Esther Royal, so his autosomal DNA results apply to this project.

ALEXANDER GUTHRIE – of Balquhadie, Fern, Angus, Scotland
Summary: Born 1725-1745, died after 1765 in Scotland; spouse unknown; child Mary (1765); autosomal kit noted; subtenant in Balquhadie, no marriage record but lawful child.

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: Angus in the mid-18th century was transitioning from feudal agriculture to early industrialization, with tenant farmers like Alexander facing enclosure movements and Jacobite aftermath (post-1745 Culloden, where many Highlanders suffered reprisals). Fern’s rural setting involved linen weaving and cattle droving, but economic pressures from Lowland clearances pushed emigration. As a subtenant, Alexander’s status reflects the hierarchical land system under lairds like the Earl of Southesk, with implications for social mobility; edge cases include illegitimate births (Mary’s “lawful” note suggests kirk recognition despite no marriage, common in Scottish records). Historical nuances include the 1755-1763 Seven Years’ War’s indirect impact on Scottish economy via trade disruptions. Descendants’ migration (e.g., via child Mary) may link to broader Diaspora, with genealogical challenges from sparse parish records pre-1855 civil registration.

ALEXANDER GUTHRIE (Farm Laborer) – of Berwickshire, Scotland
Summary: Born 1730-1750, died after 1786 in Berwickshire; spouse Janet Fairbairn (m. 1778); children William, Robert, Alexander; autosomal kit with R-M512 haplogroup, common in GFG6/7.

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: Berwickshire, in the Scottish Borders, was an agricultural borderland with history of Anglo-Scottish wars, but by the late 18th century focused on grain farming and sheep herding amid the Agricultural Revolution, using crop rotation and enclosures that displaced laborers like Alexander. The 1778 marriage coincides with American Revolution effects, as Scottish exports (e.g., linen) suffered, leading to poverty and emigration waves. Haplogroup R-M512 suggests deep European roots, potentially linking to Viking or Celtic origins, adding nuance to family identity; edge cases include border reiving legacies (clan raids until 1600s), which could explain surname variations. Implications for descendants include potential connections to industrial migration to cities like Edinburgh, and genealogical considerations like kirk session records for moral oversight on families.

Family Finder / Autosomal DNA Kits:

Alexander Guthrie/Janet Fairbairn > Robert Guthrie/Helen Mercer > Alexander Guthrie/Catherine Hall > Andrew Guthrie/Elizabeth Fraser > William Alexander Guthrie/Helena Maude Ryan (GGP)
Note: Participant is a male Guthrie with a 23andMe chip transfer. His haplogroup is designated as R-M512, which is commonly found in GFG6 and GFG7.

ALEXANDER GUTHRIE – of Northumberland, England
Summary: Born 1741, died unknown in Newcastle-upon-Tyne; spouse unidentified; child Alexander (1781-1864); autosomal kit noted.

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: Northumberland in the 18th century was a frontier county with coal mining boom and border tensions with Scotland, transitioning to early Industrial Revolution hubs like Newcastle, known for shipbuilding and trade. Guthries here may have Anglo-Scottish border roots, with name variations from “Guthrum” Viking influences. Alexander’s era saw the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion’s northern impact, with loyalty divisions; economic factors included enclosure acts displacing rural folk to urban centers. Edge cases in research include incomplete Anglican parish records, especially for unidentified spouses, potentially due to nonconformist practices. Implications include descendants’ involvement in 19th-century industrialization, with health issues from mining (e.g., black lung), and cultural ties to Geordie dialect and folklore.

ALEXANDER GUTHRIE – of Moray, Scotland
Summary: Born 1820-1840s, died unknown in Scotland; partner Helen Patricia Fraser (unmarried); child Adam Guthrie Fraser (1859); autosomal kit; illegitimate birth, family moved to Australia.

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: Moray in the mid-19th century was agricultural with whisky distilling and fishing, but hit by potato famine echoes (1846-1852) and Highland Clearances, pushing illegitimate families like this to emigration for opportunity. Forres’ house maid culture reflects Victorian social norms, where unwed motherhood carried stigma but kirk support; Adam’s surname adoption highlights flexible Scottish naming practices. Historical nuances include the 1859 birth amid Free Church Disruption (1843), dividing communities. Edge cases include illegitimacy records in OPRs (Old Parish Registers), often incomplete. Implications for descendants: Australian migration aligned with gold rushes (1851+), leading to multicultural blending, with genealogy aided by convict or assisted passage lists.

Family Finder / Autosomal DNA Kits:
Kit 519699

Alexander Guthrie/Helen Patricia Fraser > Adam Fraser (Guthrie)/Mary Martina Kain (GP)
Note: Adam Guthrie Fraser’s birth was recorded in Forres, Moray, Scotland on 25 Nov 1859. He was the illegitimate son of Helen Fraser, a house maid, and Alexander Guthrie. Adam went by the Guthrie surname as do his descendants. This line moved from Scotland to Australia.

ALEXANDER GUTHRIE – of Charlotte, New Brunswick, Canada
Summary: Born 1791 Ireland, died 1852 in Pennfield, NB; spouse Susannah Tatton (m. 1819); children Francis, Michael J, Robert, George; autosomal kits.

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: New Brunswick’s Charlotte County was settled by Loyalists post-American Revolution (1783), with Irish immigrants like Alexander arriving amid post-Napoleonic War economic slump (1815). Pennfield’s timber trade and shipbuilding boomed, but harsh winters and Mi’kmaq land claims added challenges. Historical angles include 1819 marriage during border disputes (Aroostook War 1838-1839 prelude), affecting Irish Catholic/Protestant tensions. Edge cases: Immigration records sparse, possibly via Halifax ports; name Anglicization from “O’Guthrie” possible. Implications: Descendants may tie to Acadian or United Empire Loyalist heritage, with modern DNA linking to Ulster plantations.

ALEXANDER PORTER GUTHRIE – of Illinois / California
Summary: Born 1826 Randolph County, IL, died 1875 Humbolt, CA; spouse Caroline Conrad; 9 children; autosomal kits.

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: Randolph County, IL, was frontier territory in the 1820s, part of the Northwest Ordinance lands with slavery debates (IL free state 1818), attracting migrants from south. The 1849 Gold Rush prompted California move, where Humbolt’s redwood logging and Native conflicts (e.g., Indian Wars 1850s) shaped life. Nuances include Oregon Trail risks and Civil War impacts (IL Union, CA divided); edge cases: Census gaps during migration. Implications: Economic mobility from farming to mining/logging, with descendants potentially affected by 1906 earthquake in CA.

ANDREW GUTHRIE – of Largo, Fife, Scotland
Summary: Born 1700-1720, died after 1754 in Fife; spouse Margaret Ferney (m. 1740); 8 children; autosomal kits; possible link to James Guthrie of Nether Drummochie.

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: Fife’s Largo was a fishing and farming area in the 18th century, with Covenanting history (James Guthrie executed 1661 for Presbyterianism). Enclosures and linen industry growth displaced tenants; 1740 marriage post-Jacobite 1715 rising. Edge cases: Name similarities suggest clan connections, but duplicate children (two James) indicate high infant mortality. Implications: Descendants may link to Enlightenment-era migrations, with genealogy nuanced by pre-1755 record inconsistencies.

ANDREW GUTTERY – of Pennsylvania / Ohio
Summary: Born 1760-1780 PA, died 1819 Warren County, OH; spouse Sarah Milliken; 7 children; autosomal kit.

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: Pennsylvania’s Scots-Irish settlements in the late 18th century involved Quaker tolerance but frontier Indian wars (Pontiac’s Rebellion 1763). Ohio move via Northwest Territory (1787) offered land after Revolutionary War bounties. Nuances: 1819 death amid Panic of 1819 economic crisis; edge cases: Surname spelling variations (Guttery/Guthrie) from immigration. Implications: Pioneering in Ohio Valley, with descendants in Midwest expansion.

Died about 1767 in Walker’s Creek, Augusta County, Virginia
Spouse: Archibald Rhea
Children: 5 Known
Margaret (1715), William (1716), Robert (1718), Archibald (1724), Agnes (17??)

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: Londonderry’s Siege (1689) legacy shaped Ulster Protestant families, prompting 1718 migration to Virginia for land. Augusta County’s Scotch-Irish enclave faced Shenandoah Valley Indian attacks during Seven Years’ War. Edge cases: Female-line genealogy challenges due to patrilineal records. Implications: Ties to Presbyterian settlements, influencing Appalachian culture.

ANN ELIZABETH GUTHRIE – of N. Ireland & Clay County, Illinois
Born about 1810 in N.Ireland – Died 8 September 1864 in Flora, Clay, IL
Spouse: Robert Carrick (1815-1896) m. 30 Nov 1837 in Philadelphia, PA
Children: 5

John Sylvester (1838), Robert G (1841), James (1843), Margaret (1847), Catherine Ann (1848)

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: Early 19th-century Northern Ireland saw linen decline and pre-famine emigration via Philadelphia ports. Clay County’s prairie farming attracted settlers post-Black Hawk War (1832). Nuances: 1864 death during Civil War, with IL Union loyalty. Edge cases: Transatlantic record linkages. Implications: Irish Diaspora patterns.

ANNA MARIA GUTHRIE – of Kiskiminetas, Armstrong, Pennsylvania
Born about 1820 in PA – Died 8 September 1897 in Benton, Butler, KS
Spouse: George Dunmire (1808-1890) m. about 1843 in Pennsylvania
Children: 6
Henry Robert (1844), James Edward (1854), George Washington (1856), Sophronia (1861), Ambrose (1863), William (1866)

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: Armstrong County’s iron and coal boom in 1820s drew German-Scots families. KS move post-Civil War for homesteads amid Bleeding Kansas (1850s). Edge cases: Potential branch connection via census. Implications: Frontier gender roles.

If Anna Maria Guthrie was living in the same location as her marriage, Kiskiminetas, we can look for Guthrie families living there in the 1840 and 1850 censuses. In 1840, the heads of families are Samuel Gutherey, James Gutherey, and James Gutherey. We’re looking for a household with a daughter about 20 years of age. The second household listing James Gutherey is the only one with a female of approximate age to be Anna Maria. This man has been identified as GFG2A-Branch G’s James Guthrie who married Margaret Dixon. If they are Anna’s parents, she would be the youngest daughter of the household and born 1 year after their last known child. She would fit right in to that family’s dates and location. The Kit owner has at least 2 matches to GFG2A descendants, but most her other matches are to people from Ungrouped Guthrie Families.

ANNIE GUTHRIE – of Genesee County, New York
Born about 1780, location unknown, presumably in New York
Died unknown year, presumably in New York State
Spouse: Meredith Smith (born 1778)
Children: 1 Known
Archibald (1798)

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: Genesee’s post-Revolution settlement via Holland Purchase (1797) attracted New Englanders. Nuances: War of 1812 border effects. Edge cases: Sparse female records. Implications: Erie Canal (1825) economic boost. The 1810 census of Genesee is the first year with census data showing 1 Guthrie household: Nathan Guthrie, MD 1767CT-1820NY of GFG2A-Branch F. Annie was born about 10 years before his children, so is unlikely to belong to his family. GFG2A, GFG6, and GFG were living within the region.

DANIEL GUTHRIE– of CARTERET COUNTY, NC
Born c1690 in Virginia – Died after 1753 possibly in North Carolina
Spouse: Mary Little m. about 1720
Children: 4 Known
Charles (1722), Solomon (1730), Samuel (1732), Daniel (1735)

Additional Notes/Background/Historical Context: Carteret’s pirate history (Blackbeard 1718). Nuances: Colonial land grants. Edge cases: Haplogroup suggesting NPE (non-paternity event). Implications: Coastal trade.

The Guthrie families of the Carteret County area are theorized to descend from Daniel Guthrie & Mary Little, however there is very little participation from this very large group in North Carolina. The participants we do have all descend from their son Samuel Guthrie & Sarah Williston. We need some representation from descendants of Abner Guthrie & Esther Royal and others.

Our only YDNA participant from this line matches men of the Willis and Williston surname suggesting that there could be an adoption or paternal event within the line of Samuel Guthrie. We need representation from other direct male Guthrie descendants to provide comparative data.

We do have one potential clue for the Carteret County Guthries. One of our participants descends from James C Guthrie 1803NC-c1850NC & Caroline Guthrie 1809-1868. Caroline’s lineage is traceable back to Daniel & Mary (Little) Guthrie, but James Guthrie’s ancestry is unknown. It is very likely that James and Caroline were cousins as the Carteret County families all seem to have multiple intermarriages with their extended family lines. A YDNA test of James’ direct male descendant has provided a match to Guthrie Family Group 5, which does have Virginia origins. In order to determine if James Guthrie’s results apply to other parts of the Carteret community, we’ll need some participants.

Ned Guthrie’s line is that of an African-American family. He was born into slavery. What remains undetermined is how he came about the Guthrie surname. There is one Guthrie family associated with Guthriesville. See Robert Emmet Guthrie and Mary Jane Williamson did own slaves during the last decade prior to emancipation, but no documentation has been found for a slave of Ned’s age. Another route might be via the Williamson family, which is associated by marriage to the white Guthrie family in York. Initial Autosomal testing of 1 descendant includes a few matches to people of Guthrie ancestry, but to random family groups suggesting the Guthrie connection is not also a biological one

Is This Your Piece of the Puzzle?

If one of these ungrouped Guthrie lineages aligns with your family history—through names, locations, timelines, or documented connections—it could be the key to unlocking your place in the broader Guthrie genealogy puzzle. Many of these families remain ungrouped due to gaps in historical records, non-paternal events (NPEs), or limited DNA participation, but your involvement could change that. By contributing DNA data, you not only confirm your own ancestry but also help connect branches, resolve mysteries, and strengthen the overall project for fellow researchers.

How You Can Help Connect the Dots:

  • Y-DNA Testing (for Male Guthries): If you are a direct male descendant (carrying the Guthrie surname or a variant through patrilineal descent), consider Y-DNA testing at FamilyTreeDNA (37 markers or higher recommended, or upgrade to Big Y-700 for advanced haplogroup insights). This is especially valuable for ungrouped lineages with potential mismatches (e.g., NPEs indicated by haplogroups like R-M269 or unexpected surname matches). Matching with established Guthrie Family Groups (GFGs) could group your line and reveal deeper origins, such as Scotch-Irish migrations or specific clan branches. Share your kit with the Guthrie DNA Project for expert analysis and comparisons.
  • Autosomal DNA Testing (for Everyone): Upload or test at AncestryDNA, 23andMe, MyHeritage, or FamilyTreeDNA’s Family Finder. Autosomal tests excel at confirming recent connections (up to 5–6 generations) and identifying shared segments with other Guthries. Even if you’re female or from a maternal line, your results can link to documented descendants, supporting theories like those in GFG1A or GFG2A branches. Transfer your raw data to GEDmatch or LivingDNA for broader matching.
  • Sharing Existing Results: If you’ve already tested, join the Guthrie DNA Project (free at FamilyTreeDNA) and grant admin access for grouping. Provide your kit number, pedigree chart, or family tree links to help admins spot patterns. Privacy is respected—results are anonymized in project displays.

Participating could resolve edge cases (e.g., variant spellings like Guthrey/Guttridge or disputed parentage) and reveal nuances like intermarriages, adoptions, or migrations. For lineages with theories (e.g., Thickety Creek ties or Swedish mercantile roots), your DNA might provide the proof. Contact the project admins via the Guthrie Genealogy Blog or FamilyTreeDNA group for guidance—many offer free consultations or upgrade discounts. Together, we can turn ungrouped puzzles into connected family stories!
