NOTES:

Thomas Guthrie Sr’s line has now been proven to be part of Guthrie Family Group 5, which has many of its branch origins in Virginia. It calls into question the published connection between Thomas Guthrie Sr and the Thomas Guthrie of the Cumberland County, Pennsylvania militia unit in 1777 and Middleton Township tax records as a Freeman in 1779. If this man was indeed the same person, then Thomas Guthrie Jr’s birthplace might still be Pennsylvania as he was born 10 March 1776. However, as there are currently no other connecting clues to the Pennsylvania colony, Virginia seems the more likely scenario.

We don’t know where Thomas & Mildred Guthrie were living prior to leasing an apple farm in Fauquier County, Virginia in 1792. Thomas Jr would have been 16 at the time, still living at home, and no doubt helping out as a family worker. Between 1793 and 1797, the family moved to Woodford County, Kentucky.

In 1800, Thomas Guthrie Jr is listed on a Woodford County tax list. His marriage to Lucy Wood took place between 1805 – 1810. By the time of the 1810 census they already had 4 children in the household. Lucy died 1829-1830. The last deed with her mark is dated 1 Jan 1829.

On 21 Aug 1831, Thomas married Matilda (Dorsey) Griffith, the widow of Lt. Mordecai Griffith. She was the mother of eight children including Clarissa Griffith, who later married Thomas & Lucy’s son, William D Guthrie. Thomas and Matilda moved their family from Kentucky to Marion County, Missouri about 1834-35. They were unsatisfied living there and moved to Monroe County, MO. Matilda died on 19 Oct 1843 at 65 years, 6 months, and 19 days and is buried in Bryants Cemetery in Monroe County.

A widower once again, Thomas Guthrie remarried for a third time after the customary year, on 10 Oct 1844 to the “Widow Chancy”; he was 68. A look at the records reveals the surname was Chaney, and his wife’s given name was Margaret. This is likely Ambrose Cheney (1784-1833) who married Margaret ‘Peggy’ Shanks in Bourbon, KY on 23 Nov 1819. They had 4 children: David F Chaney (1821), John W Chaney (1823), Richard F Chaney (1825) and Nancy F Chaney (1830). Ambrose had died about 1833. Margaret Chaney is listed as a HOH in Harrison, KY in 1840. At least one of her sons made a move to Missouri, prompting Margaret and her younger children to follow. She met and married Thomas Guthrie in 1844.

Thomas died four years later on 28 Sep 1848 in Florida, Monroe, MO. He was 72, although his obituary lists him as 65. “In the early days there was a water power grist mill at Florida, to which people went for many miles around to have their corn ground. In order to accommodate those coming from a distance, the miller had provided a bunk-house where his patrons could lodge over night. Mr Guthrie had gone to have some corn ground at the mill and spent the evening with several men in the bunk-house. He retired that night apparently in good health and spirits; the next morning was found dead in his bed. It was supposed that he died from heart failure. The remains were removed to his home, whence they were conveyed to their final resting place in Bryant’s Cemetery, about four miles from Paris, the county seat of Monroe County.” (AGAF, p.269)

After Thomas’ death, Margaret married on 9 Mar 1849 to widower Washington Hill. He died in 1853, after which Margaret remained a widow. She was listed on the 1880 census of Chalk Level, St Clair, Missouri living with some Chaney grandchildren.

We are told that Susan Guthrie was the oldest of Thomas Guthrie and Lucy Wood’s children, but the 1810 census shows that there were already 1M and 3F children under the age of 10 living in the household at that time. If Susan is the oldest one, her birth year of 20 March 1810 is probably incorrect by up to five years.

It is unknown whether Thomas Wood is related to Susan’s mother, Lucy (Wood) Guthrie, but it seems likely. They settled on a farm near Long Branch Creek in southern Monroe County. Thomas worked a blacksmith. See American Guthrie and Allied Families pp. 301-303 for additional info on the children.

CHILD 2: ARCHIBALD GUTHRIE SR.
Born:
1805-1810 KY – Died: 1830-1831 KY @ Age: About 25
Spouse: Charlotte Dodd m. 1 Jun 1825 Kentucky, USA
Guthrie Children: 1
Y-DNA Project Participants: N/A – No Surviving Descendants
Autosomal DNA Participants: N/A – No Surviving Descendants

Notes: Archibald’s birth order among the children born between 1805-1810 is unknown. Based on what is known about the others, Archibald is likely the 2nd or 3rd child. Born in Woodford County, Kentucky, he grew to adulthood there. His mother died about 1830 after which his father moved to Missouri with most of the family. Archibald had married five years prior to that on 1 June 1825 to Charlotte Dodd. She was a daughter of Scottish immigrants James Dodd and Betty Speiden.

Archibald and Charlotte remained in Kentucky rather than making the move to Missouri. They had settled in Jefferson County, Kentucky where they were enumerated on the 1830 census: 2M 20-29, 1F 20-29, 1F 10-14, and 1F under 5. According to AGAF, p.269, this couple had only 1 son, Archibald Guthrie Jr born 2 July 1830. This would have been after the assessment of the 1830 census, which accounts for no male child under 5, but it does not identify the other male of 20-29 or the two girls 10-14 and under 5.

Archibald died about 1830-1831. The widow, Charlotte (Dodd) Guthrie, married farmer Cranston Taylor on 26 July 1832. Eight years after their marriage, the 1840 census lists their household with: 1M 40-49, 1F 30-39, 1M and 1F 5-9, 1M and 1F under 5.

Archibald Guthrie Jr was about 9 years old at that time, so is probably the male child of 5-9. Charlotte and Cranston were parents to Ellen Douglas Taylor (1833), James Dodd Taylor (1835), Elizabeth L Taylor (1838), Ann Henry Taylor (1842) and Robert Cranston Taylor (1846). Daughter Ann died in 1847, but the others are all listed in the 1850 census of Madison, Jefferson, Indiana where the family had recently moved, including Archibald Guthrie Jr.

The Taylor family moved again sometime between 1860 and 1870 to Labette County, Kansas. Cranston Taylor died there on 14 Feb 1872. During the 1880 census of Labette, Kansas, Charlotte was living with her son Robert “Robie” Taylor. She died on 14 Dec 1885 at the age of 83.

Notes: Mary Guthrie was born about 1816 and likely remained in her parents’ home until her marriage at age 22 to Lemuel Baskett, a son of Job Baskett and his wife Sallie Mitchell. Five daughters and one son were born to Mary and Lemuel between 1839 and 1851. They lived in or near Simpsonville, Shelby, KY. Lemuel Baskett was a farmer and also a slave owner. The 1850 census places the value of real estate at $7,625. Ten years later that value was listed as $18,000 with a personal estate value of $8,500. The 1860 slave schedules list 1M 45, 1M 43, 1F 37, 1M 20, and 1F 14. On 10 Oct 1861, the birth of a slave infant named Martha was registered to Lemuel Baskett. Mary died on 5 July 1863. Her youngest child was only about 12 years old at the time. Her husband lived only 3 additional years. His death came on 7 April 1866. They are buried at the Grove Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville, Shelby County, KY.

Notes: William Guthrie was born on 1 Aug 1817 in Kentucky. The source for the middle initial “D” is the gravestone for his infant son Charlie W Guthrie in Stinking Creek Cemetery in Dade County, Missouri, which reads “son of William and Annie Guthrie”. Property records also list him as “William T Guthrie”.

William was the youngest of the two sons of Thomas Guthrie and Lucy Wood. Raise on a farm, he also became a farmer. Both Thomas and William Guthrie were slave owners.

Also like his father, William Guthrie was married three times. The majority of his lifetime William lived in Missouri, initially in Monroe County where he married his first wife, Clarissa Griffith on 21 Oct 1838. She was the daughter of Mordecai Griffith and Matilda Dorsey. The latter had married his widowed father as his second spouse back in Kentucky on 21 Aug 1831. Although there was no blood relation between them, William essentially married his stepsister.

William and Clarissa (Griffith) Guthrie had a fruitful life on their farm in Monroe County, Missouri. They were blessed with 3 sons and 4 daughters: Thomas Martin (1841), Matilda A (1843), Margaret J (1845), William Taylor* (1846), Almeta/Amanda M (1849), Henry Madison (1852), and Laura Clarisa (1855).

*See notes on the Guthrie DNA Project regarding the direct paternal line that includes William Taylor Guthrie.

William Guthrie was already a land owner in Monroe County, Missouri. In 1836, he sold to William Jackson the NW 1/4 of the NE Quarter of Section No.21 in Township 54 in Range No. 10 West containing 40 acres for $105. (DB-B, p.181) His older brother, Archibald Guthrie, had died in 1830/31 leaving William as the only surviving son in the family. He served as the administrator of his father, Thomas Guthrie’s estate upon his death in 1848. Estate and property records reveal that Thomas’ first wife, previously known as the Widow Chancy, was actually the widow Margaret (MNU) Chaney, and that she married for a third time on 9 March 1849 to Washington Hill. William Guthrie filed a petition with the local courts for an assignment of dower to Margaret Hill, formerly Margaret Guthrie.

Clarissa (Griffith) Guthrie died on 4 Sep 1855 in Monroe County, Missouri leaving William Guthrie a widower with 7 children aging from infancy to 14 years of age. He remarried only months later on 6 Dec 1855 to Mrs Mildred (Rogers) Acuff, the widow of Christopher Columbus Acuff (1807-1841) who had three children of her own: Martha A Acuff (1831), Joseph Christopher Acuff (1833), and Columbus Acuff (1840). During the 1860 census, Mildred Guthrie, 52, is listed as the Head of Household in Spencer, Pike County, Missouri. Step-children Thomas 19, William, 13, Amanda, 11, and Laura 5 are listed with her. William Guthrie may have been speculating land in Butler County at the time of the census. In November 1860, a William T Guthrie of Pike County, MO purchased land there. Butler County

The marriage between William Guthrie and Mildred (Rogers) Guthrie seems to have ended by 1863. Mildred Guthrie is found making property deals on her own accord. She purchased at public auction for $138. The deed was to be made to Alfred Wilson held in trust for Mildred Guthrie’s “sole and separate use”. (DB-T, pp.44-45) No notation has yet been found regarding Mildred’s legal separation/divorce from William Guthrie. She purchased more land in 1866 and sold land in 1868. Mildred is found in the 1870 census living in Salt River, Audrain, Missouri: Mildred Guthrie, 63, 1600 real estate value, born KY. Next door is the household of her son Columbus Acuff and family. Mildred died 5 Feb 1872.

On 15 Dec 1867 in Butler County, Missouri, William Guthrie married Mrs Ann Connell (Scott) Acuff. She was the widow of Samuel Acuff (1836-1865) with whom she had 3 children: Rebecca J Acuff (1859), William R Acuff (1863), and Ellen Minerva Acuff (1865). William and Annie had 3 daughters: Mollie (1868), Sarah Florence (1872), and Susan Fannie (1876). Their only son was Charlie W Guthrie who died on the day of his birth, 22 May 1871. The 1900 census indicates that Ann had given birth to 7 children, only 6 of whom were living at that date.

The 1870 Census of Epps, Butler, Missouri includes the Guthery Household:
William Guthery 50 farmer – 595 personal property – born KY, his wife Ann C. Guthery 30 keeping house – born MO; children: Rebecca J Guthery 10 – born MO, William Guthery 8 – Born MO, Elender Guthery 6 – born MO, and Mary E 1 – born MO. Note that Rebecca, William and Elender are actually Acuff children listed under the Guthery name. Mary E Guthrie is William and Annie’s first child together. None of his other children remained in the household. The youngest of them lived with other relatives.

William Guthrie died on 8 Sep 1876. His wife Ann survived him by 57 years. She was 93 at her death on 19 Jul 1933. They are both buried at Stinking Creek Cemetery in Dade County, Missouri.

Spouse: George Fred Waltz (1827-1901) m. 5 Oct 1848 in Monroe County, Missouri, USA
Waltz Children: Yes
Y-DNA Project Participants: N/A – Female Guthrie
Autosomal DNA Participants: NONE

Notes: Lucy Guthrie’s birth year is a moving target. Most census records note that she is older than her husband, George Fred Waltz. Her mother Lucy (Wood) Guthrie died in 1830, so that is the latest year of the target range. Looking at the 1830 census, there are no female children under the age of 10. The youngest child is 10-14 (1816-1820). In 1840, the youngest female is 15-19 (1821-1825). This suggests Lucy is on the cusp of the age bracket placing her birth year about 1820-1821. The 1850 census lists a transcription error showing her as 37 instead of 27 (1823). The 1860 census lists her as 40 (1820). In 1870 she is listed as 45 (1825), and in 1880 54 (1826).

Lucy Guthrie married George Fred Waltz on 5 October 1848 in Monroe County, Missouri. He was a farmer. They lived in South Fork, Santa Fe, Monroe County, MO (1860), Salt River, Mexico, Audrain, MO (1870), Jefferson, Monroe, MO (1880). They had two children: Elizabeth and Thomas. Lucy died sometime between 1880 and 1900. George went to California where he died in 1901.

Thomas Guthrie Sr is represented by son James Guthrie’s line with Y-DNA matching the GFG5 genetic profile. Although we have Autosomal DNA Participants representing most other sons, we do not have any other sons with GFG5 YDNA. See GFG5C.

Guthrie Family Group – Subgroup GFG5C
Thomas Guthrie Jr’s line is represented by the YDNA of two close cousins whose Most Recent Common Ancestor is Richard LeRoy Guthrie (1879-1946). Richard’s Y-DNA, therefore, is identified as GFG5C. Both cousins share this GFG5C YDNA. Their most common surname match is Griffith, which is a name found within the family circle in earlier generations. An adoption or non-paternal event incurred at some point in one of the following generations: Thomas Guthrie Jr (b.1776), William D Guthrie (b. 1817), William Taylor Guthrie (b.1846), or Richard LeRoy Guthrie (b.1879). Additional YDNA testing of Guthrie men descending from these lineage is needed to determine the generational origin of the genetic mismatch.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: ELIJAH K GATES, ‘The History of Pike County, Missouri,” 1833 Mills & Company, Des Moines, Iowa, pp.969-970.

“E. K. Gates, merchant, Curryville.  The subject of this sketch was born in Kentucky, in 1835; was reared on a farm and educated in the subscription schools.  At the age of about eighteen he had a desire to see something of the world, and turned his course toward the Pacific coast, where in the spring of 1854 he landed in San Francisco, California.  From there he went into the mining regions, where he worked with good success for four years; he then returned to Kentucky, where he remained a few months, after which he came to Pike county, and locating in Spencerburg engaged in the mercantile business, where he remained for about ten years; he then came to Curryville, and built a large store-house and residence.  He carries a large assortment of general merchandise, and by strict attention to business and honest and upright dealings with his patrons, he has built up a large trade and won a large circle of warm and true friends.  He was married in 1861, to Miss Matilda Guthery of Munroe county.  They had two children: William E. and Lydell, the later living only about three months.  His wife died in 1865.  He was again married March 6, 1869, to Miss Caroline Almond, of Pike County.  By this union, there were two children: De Lafette and Emma, the latter only about one year old.”

OBITUARY: MERRITT SCOTT ALLOWAY (1919)
OPERATION KILLS M.S.ALLOWAY

M.S. ALLOWAY , ONE OF THE PIONEER RESIDENTS OF THIS COMMUNITY AND FOR MANY YEARS engaged in business in Elsberry, died early Tuesday morning in the Missouri Baptist sanitarium in St. Louis, following an operation for gangrene in the bowels brough about by adhesive obstruction. He was in his 74th year. While relatives and close friends familiar with his conditionknew that the end was but a few days a way at best, the news of his death was a distinct shock to those less familiar with the seriousness of his case. Apparently Mr. Alloway was enjoying good health until Sunday morning, April 27, 1919, while preparing to attend church services he was seized with a pain in his stomach. Nothing was thought of it at that time, but he was unable to attend church that morning and before the conclusion of the service, relatives were advised that he was in a precarious condition. Dr. Powell, the family physician, was summoned and rendered medical assistance, giving temporary relief. He continued to grow worse, however, and Dr. Powell diagnosed his case as obstruction of the bowels. Dr. Lowry was called into consultation and his views coincided with those of the family physician. Mr. Alloway was taken to a St. Louis hospital last friday morning, accompained by Dr. Powell, Mrs. Ernest Redd, and Mrs. Mary R. Alloway. He was operated on about noon, but when it was discovered that gangrene had set in, it was known that he could live but a short time. He lingered until early Tuesday mroning. A peculiar coincidence in connection with this case is the fact that Mr. Alloways only son, Dr. H. C. Alloway , died under an operation in Rochester , MN less than 5 months ago. ( At the Mayo Clinic)

The body was brought back to Ellseberry Tuesday afternoon. Funeral services were held in the Baptist church on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, Rev. T. J. Phillips, and the interment took place in Elsberry cemetery under the auspices of the Masonic lodge, of which has has long been an esteemed member.

The following eulogy was written by his pastor;

Meritt S. Alloway was born Nov. 7, 1845, and passed to his Heavenly reward on May 6, 1919. He was united in marriage to Miss Almeda Guthrie on June 14, 1868. Death claimed the wife of his young manhood in June, 1878. To this union was born a daughter and a son, Mrs. Lena Clayton, who passed away on Mov. 7, 1916, and Dr. H C Alloway who died on Nov. 6, 1918. Mr Alloway was married a second time to Miss Annie Collings on Jan. 10 , 1886. She passed away in December of that same year, leaving an infant daughter, now Mrs. Ernest Redd, of Mexico.

Brother Alloway belonged to a race of strong, sturdy people who have been blessed with the realization of the promise of the scriptures; “Their days being long upon the land which the Lord their God gave them. ” He leaves to mourn his departure, besides his daughter, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Whiteside, aged 86, Mrs. S . E. Clayton, 79, and one brother Charles L. Alloway, aged 83. He is survived by 4 grandchildren, a number of neices and a sister in law, Mrs. J. W. Birkhead, to whom he gave the love and devotion of a father. Brother Alloway was a man of sterling worth as a citizen and honored for his Christian integrity. He appreciated his pator, loved his church and enjoyed the fellowship of God’s people. Peace to his ashes; precious his memory.
