CHILD 1: MARY MONTGOMERY
Born: Abt. 1811 KY – Died: Bef. 1844 @ Age: Abt. 30s
Spouse 1: John J Stubbins m. 30 Oct 1829 in Henry County, Kentucky, USA
Spouse 2: Elias Gardner m. 16 Oct 1837 in Henry County, Kentucky, USA
Children: Yes, by both husbands.

Mary Montgomery is said to have been born about 1811 in Kentucky, but that date may have been an estimate based on the known date of her first marriage to John Stubbins in Henry County, KY on 30 Oct 1829. The John Stubbins family was enumerated in the 1830 census (1M 20-29, 2F 5-9, 1F 10-14, 3F 15-19, 1F 50-59). John would be the male of 20-29 and Mary one of the 15-19 year olds. The others could be his widowed mother and younger siblings.

John and Mary (Montgomery) Stubbins had a daughter, Jane “Jennie” Stubbins born in 1833. Other probable children are Robert Stubbins, born 1829, and John S Stubbins, born about 1832. John presumably died soon afterward, or at least before 1837 when Mary’s second marriage took place.

On 16 Oct 1837 in Henry County, Kentucky, Mary Stubbins married Elias Harvey Gardner. He was a local farmer. He was a widower whose first wife was Susannah Stamper. They had three children together: Jonathan Stamper Gardner (1822), Levi B Gardner (1826), and Sarah Gardner (1828).

Mary and Elias added a son and daughter to the family, Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ Gardner (1839) and Dunlap Gardner (1859). Both of these children died in 1859. Lizzie had already married and started a family. Duncan was just 18 and still single.

Mary (Montgomery) Gardner died sometime before 1844, presumably in Henry County, KY. That year Elias married the widow Eliza (Turk) Thomas on 23 Sep 1844, Bondsman: Robert Turk. She had three known children by her previous marriage and had two with Elias. Thomas Turk Gardner was born abt. 1845 and Eliza Catherine ‘Cate’ Gardner abt. 1849.

The 1850 Census of District 1, Henry, KY lists the households of Elias Gardner, 52, Farmer, $3474 next to the household of John S Stubbins, 18, farmer, M J Stubbins (probably Jane ‘Jennie’ Stubbins), 17, and Robert Stubbins, 21, farmer. Also living there were John Thomas, 18, Noah Thomas, 14, and Richard Thomas, 12, sons of Eliza (Turk) Gardner, previously Thomas.

Elias Gardner died on 28 Nov 1862. Note that Find-a-Grave has merged wives Mary and Eliza into one individual listed as Mary Eliza Turk.

There is some confusion in online records as there are two men named William H Clay who married two different women of similar names: Nancy ‘Nannie’ B. Montgomery and Nancy ‘Nannie’ E. Hurt. It was the latter who was the mother of Martha and Willie. Nannie B (Montgomery) Clay is noted in the 1900 census of Green, Platte, Missouri to have had no living children.
