NOTES:
Basic family information on James Guthrie is covered in a biographical sketch of his grandson of the same name published in the 6th edition of Kentucky: A History of the State, by Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 1887. James Guthrie was born in Virginia on 28 March 1779. He married Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Gibbs, the daughter of Rev. War soldier, Julius Gibbs in Woodford County, Kentucky on 16 March 1802. They resided in that county until 1837. Their children were born mainly in Woodford between 1803 – 1826. The family moved to Shelby County, Kentucky where they settled on the old State Turnpike east of Shelbysvill where James Guthrie kept a public house and a stage stand until his death on 26 February 1840. He wrote a last will and testament. His wife survived him. She died on 17 November 1859.
James’ son Isaac Newton Guthrie moved from Kentucky to Gallatin, Sumner, Tennessee, which by coincidence is also the home of descendants of the GFG2A – Branch A Guthrie line.

Spouse: Eleanor ‘Ellin’ Heady m. 26 Nov 1829 in Shelby County, KY
Guthrie Children: None
Little is known about Nathaniel Guthrie life. He was only 27 at his death on 23 Jan 1832. He had married Eleanor ‘Ellin’ Heady in 1829 they were listed in the Shelby County, Kentucky census under the name “Nathan Guthrie”.
Nathan Guthrie Household: 1M 20-29 (Nathan), 1F 15-19 (Ellin), and 1M 15-19 (unidentified). The household also included 2 slaves: 1F 10-23 and 1M under 10.
Nathan and Eleanor made a bold move soon after the census by heading to Texas to join Stephen F Austin’s colony when it was still part of Mexico. The details of Nathan’s death are unknown, but he is presumably buried in eastern Texas. His widow Eleanor remarried to William Jarvis Russell (1802-1881), who was a captain commanding a company of Texians.
Eleanor is credited with molding the “first bullets fired by an American colonist of Texas against the encroachment of Mexico.” Following the Battle of San Jacinto, Eleanor served as one of Sam Houston’s nurses. The Russells raised 12 children despite the ongoing conflicts between the Texians and Mexico. William died in 1881 and is buried in San Antonio, TX. Eleanor died 22 March 1890 and is buried at Pioneer Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
A NOBLE WOMAN DEAD.
_______

Spouse 2: Martha Ann Montgomery on 8 May 1845 in Shelby County, KY
Spouse 3: Margaret E (Hardin) Taylor on 25 Mar 1879
Guthrie Children: Yes
Isaac Newton Guthrie was raised in Shelby County, KY. He went into the mercantile business with his brother Thomas Churchill Guthrie styling themselves as IN & TC Guthrie. He married Mary Beauchamp in 1832. They became parents to a daughter, Elizabeth Frances Guthrie, born in 1833, and four sons, James William Guthrie (1836), Isaac Newton Guthrie Jr (1838), Nathan Lewis Guthrie (1840), and Henry Clay Guthrie (1842). His wife Mary died on 15 Sep 1844. She was buried in the old Beauchamp family burying grounds, now called the Radford-Guthrie Cemetery in Peytona, Shelby, KY. (Find-a-Grave Memorial 102496499)
Eight months later, Isaac married Martha Ann Montgomery on 8 May 1845 in Shelby, KY. No children are recorded for the couple until 1850 after which there were many. Unknown if there were miscarriages in the early years of their marriage. In 1847, a doctor was hired to treat Martha for an illness, but whether it was psychological or physical is unknown. This led directly to Martha’s infidelity and the attempted murder of her husband.
The Louisville Daily Courier, Thu, 28 Mar 1850: Mrs Guthrie was said to be “under the influence of some unaccountable delusion, or some pernicious drug, was seduced by Dr Ninian E Michuson, who had been called in by her husband to undertake the cure of a disease under which she was laboring. Frequenting the house of Guthrie as his family physician, and under the garb of friendship, he continued to importune Mrs Guthrie to grant him illicit favors.” The doctor repeatedly urged Mrs Guthrie to let no good opportunity pass for putting her husband out of the way. Dr Michuson reportedly supplied the strychnine and had it delivered to Mrs Guthrie, who mixed the drug, and delivered it to her husband. Guthrie drank part of it, but his life was saved after the administration of an emetic. Yet, in the end, Michuson was pronounced ‘Not Guilty!’ To add to the odd circumstances, the marriage did not end in divorce. The public courts appear to have laid the blame solely in Mitchuson’s direction. Isaac and Martha were reconciled.
They soon moved from Kentucky to Gallatin, Sumner, Tennessee. (Note that Sumner County, TN is also the home to GFG2A-Branch A descendants.) Isaac Newton Guthrie purchased a large tract of land southwest of Gallatin where he built a large brick house he named ‘Petona’. He was a successful planter and stock raiser. Isaac was a Royal Arch Mason and prominent in the Baptist Church. Between 1850 and 1867, Isaac and Martha were blessed with eight children: George Nuchols Guthrie (1850), a future mayor of Gallatin, Elizabeth J Guthrie (1851), Anna Mariah Guthrie (1853), Emma Lutitia Guthrie (1855), Charles Guthrie (1857), Frank C Guthrie (1860), William Montgomery Guthrie (1864), and Mary Beauchamp Guthrie (1867).

Thu, 23 May 1850, p.2
Isaac’s wife Martha Ann (Montgomery) Guthrie died on 30 July 1877. She is buried at the Gallatin City Cemetery in Section B, Row 13. (Find-a-Grave Memorial 63640489). Two years after Martha’s death, Isaac chose to remarry. He was 68. His new bride was Margaret Eleanor (Hardin) Taylor, the widow of Bushrod Duval Taylor, and mother of ten. Having married Taylor at the age of 16, Margaret was only 46 at the time of her marriage to Isaac in 1879.

DEATH OF MR. J. D. GUTHRIE
………..
A Man who was Widely Known for his
Enterprise and Public Spirit
……….
A dispatch received yesterday announced the death of Jephtha D. Guthrie, at his home near Shelbyville, KY. The news came to Louisville as the tidings of a local calamity, for his place in the affection and the business interest of the city has never been relinquished to his later home. He was one of the pioneer business men of the town, and had amassed a fortune of nearly $300,000 prior to his removal to Shelby County, about fifteen years ago. This he afterward largely added to by the breeding of Holstein cattle, which he first successfully introduced into the State.
Mr. Guthrie was an active mason, and the first President of the Masonic Widows’ and Orphans Home. In his later years he was a prominent Granger, being for some time manager of the co-operative store which that body instituted some years ago, and which, under the wise impetus of his policy, is still in existence. At the time of his death, in addition to his large farming interests, he was a partner in the People’s Mil of Shelbyville, a Director of the Shelby County Fair, and one of the managing Directors of the Farmers’ and Traders’ Bank. In addition to his wife, who survives him, he leaves a family of two sons and three daughters.
Mr. Guthrie removed to Shelby County form this city sixteen years ago. He was the uncle of Mr. B. F. Guthrie, the well-known banker. No one who ever knew him failed to love him; and, now that he is dead, the record of his simple life, kept as it is in many hearts, is an epitaph tenderer and more enduring than any to be engraved on stone. At the time of his death he was 67 years of age.
