NOTES: Born on 30 April 1787, Elizabeth Guthrie was nicknamed Betsy. She married James Lawrence Gibbs, a son of Julius Gibbs and Aggie Davis, and the brother of the Elizabeth Gibbs who married her elder brother James Guthrie creating two James-Betsy / Guthrie-Gibbs marriages. The younger pair were married in Franklin, Kentucky on 8 August 1811. Initially, they lived in Shelby County, but were residing in Franklin again by the time of the 1830 census. Unlike several of the Guthrie siblings who removed to Tennessee or Missouri, this couple remained in Franklin County, Kentucky. James died in Bridgeport on 21 Dec 1872 and Betsy on 14 Feb 1875. They are buried at the Gibbs Family Cemetery in Waddy, Shelby, Kentucky.

American Guthrie and Allied Families, p. 294 erroneously includes 3 additional children. Monica Frances Gibbs (1841), Robert Gibbs (1843), and Jerome R Gibbs (1848). These are not the children of James & Betsy (Guthrie) Gibbs. Betsy would have been in her 50s during those years, there is a significant gap after the birth of son Julius in 1826, and none show up on census records with the couple in 1850 or 1860.

CHILD 1: THOMAS JEFFERSON GIBBS
Born: 9 Jan 1813 KY – Died: 1867 TX
Spouse: Permelia Johnson (1811-) m. 20 Mar 1833 in Franklin County, KY, USA
Children: Yes

Born in Kentucky on 9 Jan 1813, Thomas Jefferson Gibbs was the eldest child of James Lawrence and Betsy (Guthrie) Gibbs. The family was living in Shelby County, KY during the 1820 census and by 1830 they had settled in Franklin County, KY where he grew to manhood. Thomas was about 20 years of age on 20 Mar 1833 when he married Permela Johnson, a daughter of William T Johnson.

This couple has not been located in the 1840 census of Kentucky. They may have been living in the household of a relative or employer, or by this time may have already moved to Missouri. There are two candidates in the 1840 Missouri Census:
1.) Thomas Gibbs of Manque, Benton, Missouri: 1M and 1F 20-29, 2M 5-9, 1M under 5, Agriculture: 1 Employed.
2.) Thos J Gibbs of Fulton, Callaway, Missouri: 1M and 1F 20-29, 1M 5-9. Agriculture: 1 Employed.
This second household conforms to the family numbers at the time. They had one son born in 1835, Edward.

Sometime prior to the 1850 census, Thomas and Permela moved to Ralls County, Missouri, where Thomas was occupied as a cooper. Their family now included 3 children: Edward T Gibbs 15 (born in KY), Elizabeth C Gibbs 7 (born in MO), and Andrew J Gibbs 5 (born in KY). Note that the census shows the family was back in Kentucky at the time of Andrew’s birth in 1845.

Thomas was still working as a cooper (industry: miscellaneous wood products) during the 1860 census when they were living in Bedford, Lincoln, Missouri. The household consisted of Thomas Gibbs 57 cooper (born KY) personal estate value $150, Permelia Gibbs 50 (born KY), Catharine Gibbs 17 (born IL), and Jackson Gibbs 15 farmer (born IL).

Most online trees list Thomas’ death in 1867, some without a location, and others listing Missouri City, Fort Bend, Texas. All without any attached documentation as evidence. There are several men named Thomas Gibbs who lived in Missouri about the same time. Advertisements for T J Gibbs, Carpenter and Builder, in Troy, MO are found for 1869-1870. On 6 Jul 1877 a representative of New Bloomfield wrote The Fulton Gazette to inform readers of the new paper of the improvements in the township. This included mention of “T.J. Gibbs is our cabinet workman and house-builder.” (The Fulton Gazette, Fri, Jul 6, 1877 p.3. Newspapers.com). It is uncertain whether these records apply to this Thomas Jefferson Gibbs.

Many trees also list Permelia’s death as 5 Feb 1910 in Mexico, Audrain, MO. This is definitely an error. The 1910 DOD refers to the death of Permelia S. (Gibbs) Watts Holloway, and not Permelia (Johnson) Gibbs. (Mexico Missouri Message, Thu., Feb 10, 1910, p.1., Newspapers.com)
