NOTES:

Ransom is a name that has cropped up in a couple of other descendant lines, and is therefore a potential for family association.

Ransom Guthrie was the youngest child of the family. He was born on 7 Nov 1849 in Lafayette County, Mississippi. He was a farmer and teacher. Ransom’s first wife was Louissa D Varner, whom he married about 1868 in MS. She was the mother of his children. She died about 1898 in Winn Parish, Louisiana. His second marriage to Sarah E Martin took place when he was about 49 years of age. Sarah is also listed as Sarah J. L. Martin in the 1880 Census and is found listed in some trees as Sarah Jane Lavina Martin. Her marriage and death records list her as Sarah Ellen, and all census records after her marriage as Sarah or Sallie E Guthrie.

Ransom died in Calvin, Winn Parish on 27 Oct 1930. Sarah died on 27 Jul 1949. They are all buried at Bethlehem Cemetery in Winn Parish, Louisiana.

CHILD 1: LOU DONNIA GUTHRIE
Born 1869 MS – Died 1945 LA
Spouse: Arthur Moffett m. 30 January 1896 in Winn Parish, Louisiana, USA

Lou Donnie Guthrie’s birth was on All Hallow’s Eve in 1869 (31 Oct) in Oxford, Lafayette, Mississippi. The 1870 census shows her father, R. J. Guthrie, 28, male, white, Teacher, listed with the other teachers and students at the Female College in Oxford, Lafayette, Mississipi. This presumably means that his wife Louisa, and their daughter Lou were living elsewhere in Oxford. There is an E. L. Guthrie, 16, listed as a female student, whose identity is unclear. Wife and daughter do not appear to be living with her parents, Rufus Morgan & Nancy (Hamilton) Varner. Ransom’s parents were both deceased by 1870.

The 1880 census of Lafayette lists “Loutta” as 11 years old. She is living with her parents R. G. Guthrie, 31, and Louisa, 32, along with her sister, Mary C Guthrie, 9, and brother Walter Jas, 2. Ransom is now working as a farmer rather than a teacher. The Guthrie family moved to Winn Parish, Louisiana where the mother, Louissa, died in 1894.

Lou married Arthur Moffett in Winn Parish, Louisiana on 30 January 1896. A son of Thomas and Elizabeth ‘Saleta’ (Hearn) Moffett, Arthur worked and owned his own farm. They were married for nearly 50 years, but had no children. Lou died on 30 October 1945, the day before her birthday. Arthur survived her by 4 years. He died on 27 January 1949. They are interred at Springhill Cemetery in Jonesboro, Jackson Parish, LA.

CHILD 2: MARY CORINNA GUTHRIE
Born 1871 MS – Died 1934 LA
Spouse 1: Henry Thomas Warren m. 1 Jun 1902 in Winn, Louisiana, USA
Spouse 2: Clarence Donald Moffett m. bet. 1925-1930 in Louisiana, USA

Mary Corinna Guthrie was born in Oxford, Lafayette, Mississippi on 30 July 1871. She was 9 years of age during the 1880 census. The family had moved to Winn Parish, Louisiana, her mother died, and father remarried by the time of the 1900 census. Still single at 29 years of age (listed as 26), “Mary” was living at home with her father, stepmother, and youngest brother, Ernest. She is not listed with an occupation of her own, but likely helped with housework and on the family farm.

At 30 years of age, she married Henry Thomas Warren, a widower with 3 children: Mary Viola, Howard Cecil, and Robert Earl, born between 1895 and 1899. They married 1 June 1902 in Winn Parish, LA, and were listed together in the 1910 census of Anderson County, Texas. They apparently returned to Louisiana.
Henry died 28 October 1921.

Sometime before the 1930 census, Mary remarried to Clarence Donald ‘Tack’ Moffett. He was the brother of her sister’s husband, Arthur Moffett. Tack had been previously married to Emma Josephine Stovall, with whom he had 15 children born between 1892 and 1916. Josie had died in 1925. The 1830 census lists Clarence D, 61, Corrina, 58, three of the children, 15-24, and Horace P Pyburn, a 72 year old widower identified as a brother-in-law.

Mary Corinna (Guthrie) Moffett died on 8 November 1934 in Jackson, Louisiana. She was buried in Bethlehem Cemetery, her grave marker indicating that she was the wife of H T Warren. Her death certificate confirms her marriage to C. D. Moffett.

CHILD 3: WALTER JAMES GUTHRIE
Born 1878 MS – Died 1945 CA
Spouse: Angeline Virginia Hawthorne aka ‘Ginny’ / ‘Jennie’

Walter James Guthrie was born either on 3 May or 6 June of 1878 in Oxford, Lafayette, Mississippi. He was just 2 years old at the time of the 1880 census. Like his father, he spent some time during early adulthood as a school teacher having completed 2 years of college. His wife Angeline ‘Virginia’ Hawthorne was also a school teacher. They married prior to the 1910 census when the pair was living in the Hawthorne household. They had no children. By 1920, ‘James’ had changed occupations and was working in a saw mill as a scaler. In 1930, they were farming, and this time living with his father Ransom Guthrie and stepmother, Sallie.

In 1940, J W Guthrie, 61, listed as a married lodger, is living in the household of his brother-in-law Arthur Moffett and sister Lou. Virginia is found living with a sister and family in Nachitoches, LA, listed as a widow. James died on 5 Oct 1945. Uncertain if they were actually divorced or just separated at the time of that 1940 census.

CHILD 4: ERNEST GRONER GUTHRIE
Born 1885 MS – 1934 LA
Spouse: Carrie Magnes Hogg m. 27 January 1915 in Anderson County, Texas, USA

(Caution/Name Alert: There is a Grover Edward Guthrie (1884Ap-1968OK) who m. a Carrie Ida Hartley who’s records appear to be entangled with this family.)

The youngest of the Guthrie bunch was born on 6 July 1885 in Mississippi. The family had moved to Winn Parish, Louisiana prior to his mother’s death in 1894. He was still 14 at the time of the 1900 census. By this time his father had remarried to his stepmother, Sallie. A decade later, Ernest had already left home and was working as a farm laborer for William C Howard in Winn Parish, LA. The Guthrie family moved to Texas sometime after that, and Ernest apparently went with them. He married in Anderson County, Texas to Carrie Magnes Hogg on 27 January 1915.

They moved back to Winn Parish soon afterward because that was their address when Ernest completed his WWI Draft Registration. The description lists him of medium height and build with black hair and light brown eyes. They had several children.

Ernest Guthrie died rather tragically from injuries sustained after being run over by a truck. He fell from the passenger side of the truck and the driver was unable to stop in time to prevent the wheels from rolling over him.
