NOTES:

Orin Guthrie, the son of Shadrick and Malinda Guthry, was born on 28 Oct 1804 in Kentucky. He was a minister in the Primitive Baptist Church and a farmer/rancher. Orin married first to Nancy Boyd on 20 Jan 1827 in Hardeman County, Tennessee. No children. She must have died within a year or two of their marriage. Her cause of death is unknown. Orin remarried on 23 Jan 1829, also in Hardeman, to Elizabeth Davis. Most of the Davis family moved to Texas, but Orin and Elizabeth, along with one of her brothers, settled in Mississippi. Between 1841-1850 the family moved to Lavaca County, Texas where they bought land from the Davis family. Orin Guthrie died there 9 Oct 1854. His widow, Elizabeth, lived until 23 Mar 1892 passing away in Charco, Goliad, Texas.

CHILD 1: ELIZABETH JANE GUTHRIE

Elizabeth Jane Guthrie was born on 31 January 1831 in Kentucky. Her parents moved to Mississippi where she married at a young age, reportedly at 16 in 1846 to Wesley F Vick. He was a son of Rev. Richard and Mary Vick. The Guthrie and Vick families moved to the Republic of Texas settling in Lavaca County where the Davis family had moved. They lived and farmed near Hallettsville. The biographical sketch (see below) on the Guthrie and Vick families mentions only six children, but census records show ten. Wesley was a Confederate Soldier during the Civil War. ‘Mrs E J Vick’ was approved a widow’s pension in 1899.

CHILD 2: WILLIAM DAVIS GUTHRIE
Born 1831 KY – Died 1860 TX
Spouse: (m.1853TX) Martha Ann Elizabeth Culpepper m. 1853 in Texas

William Davis Guthrie was the only son of Rev Orin Guthrie and wife Elizabeth Davis McKinney. He was born in Kentucky, moved to Mississippi with his family in his youth, and then to Texas. He was 19 and living at home in Lavaca during the 1850 census. He married Martha Ann Elizabeth Culpepper, daughter of Frank and Eglantine (Langley) Culpepper on 10 Feb 1853 in Lavaca County, Texas. They had one son born in 1858 named William Francis Guthrie.

William Davis Guthrie was a farmer. The 1860 census lists him with $700 worth of real estate and a personal estate worth $800. Unfortunately, he had a short life. He died later that year on 9 Oct 1860 at only 29 years of age.

His widow, Martha, remarried on 2 Jul 1861 in Sweet Home, Lavaca, TX to William’s cousin, Shadrick Marion Guthrie. They lived in Lavaca, Baylor, and Wichita. Their family consisted of 5 sons and 1 daughter: Stonewall Jackson Guthrie, Shadrack Marion Guthrie Jr, James J Guthrie, Edgar Ardnee Guthrie, Ninevah Irene Guthrie, and Lemuel Guthrie.

CHILD 3: MARY ANN GUTHRIE
Born 1839 KY – Died 1862 TX
Spouse: Daniel F Culpepper m. 1855 in Lavaca County, Texas

Mary Ann Guthrie was born about 1839 in Kentucky. She was listed as being only 10 in the 1850 census, so her birthday was likely in the second half of the year. She was a young bride at about 16 years old on 16 Aug 1855 in Lavaca County, TX when she married Daniel F Culpepper. He was a son of Frank & Eglantine Culpepper making this the second Culpepper marriage in the family (see above). Mary Ann gave birth to 5 known children, and died in 1862. She was buried in Mount Olive Cemetery in Lavaca. Mary Ann was only 23 at her death.

Daniel Culpepper remarried to Zilpha L Reeder on 18 Sep 1872 in Lavaca County, TX. They had 1 son and 6 daughters together: Eglantine Culpepper, Blanche Culpepper, Margaret Culpepper, Cynthia Jane Culpepper, Ira G Culpepper, Ida Gertrude Culpepper, and Winnie Bell Culpepper.

Born 1841 MS – Died 1881 TX
Spouse: John Thomas Jefferson Culpepper m.1855 in Lavaca County, Texas

The youngest child in the family was Cynthia Ann Guthrie, born in Mississippi on 10 September 1841. The family moved to Lavaca, Texas before she was ten years old. The 1850 census lists her as 8 years old. Her father, Rev. Orin Guthrie, died in 1854, which may have been one reason why Cynthia was married the next year at only 13 years of age to John Thomas Jefferson Culpepper. He was 27 at the time of their marriage, and another of the Culpepper children of Frank and Eglantine (Langley) Culpepper.

John and Cynthia had 13 children. They resided in Lavaca County the remainder of their lives. They farmed and raised sheep. Cynthia died in 1881 and John in 1902. They were buried at Mount Olive Cemetery in Lavaca County, Texas.
