NOTES:
Allen Guthrie was born about 1812 in Kentucky to Shadrick Guthry and his first wife. His youth was spent in Kentucky. The family moved to Mississippi sometime after 1830, and Allen purchased 160 acres in 1837The 1840 census lists him as a Head of Household, working in Agriculture, with a wife of 15-19 years of age. No children yet in the household. Presumably, they married earlier that year in Lafayette, MS. His wife was Sarah Ann E Stuart (Stuard or Stuard). Property records list her as :Sarah Ann or Sarahann. One census record lists her as “S E”. Some trees list her parents as Presbyterian Minister Rev. Thomas Caldwell Stuart and Susan Harland, but she is not on the list of his verified children, so confirmation is required.

The US Bureau of Land Management Tract Books, 1800-c1955 lists a Land Assessment for Allen Guthry dated 27 Jan 1837. Offered at Public Sale 5 Jan 1836. Township 11. Part of Section S W 1/4 Section 19 Township 11 Range 1 containing 160 acres and 00 hundredths. Rate per acre: $1.00. Purchase Money: $160.00. Name of the Purchaser: Allen Guthry. Date of Sale: 27 Jan 1837. Number of Receipt: 8104. Number of Purchase Certificate: 8104. Digital Repository: Family Search. He sold this property on Nov 10, 1847 to Richard Vicks. The sale was recorded in the Pontotoc, MS Deed Book 6, Page 160.

The 1845 State Census of Mississippi lists the Allen Guthrie household in Lafayette with 4 males and 1 female. They were listed in Pontotoc, MS in 1850 with their sons: John (7), Owen (3), and William (1), but these were apparently not their only children. Another son, George, was born in April just months before Allen’s untimely death. Rumor has it that he was shot by his partners in a fight over a cotton gin. Allen died on 8 July 1852 in Calhoun, MS.

A year after his death the Flag of the Union published on Fri, 4 Nov 1853 a Proclamation for a $250 reward “Whereas, one ROBERT HILL, stands charged with having murdered ALLEN GUTHRIE, in Calhoun County, Miss. on the 8th day of July last, which murder was committed under circumstances of peculiar atrocity; and whereas said Robert Hill has fled from justice, and his now at large; Now, therefore, J Henry S Foote, Governor of the State of Mississippi, do offer a reward of two hundred and fifty dollars, for the arrest and delivery of said Robert Hill, to the Sheriff of Pontotoc County; and I moreover require all officers of the State to be diligent in their efforts to arrest the fugitive.”

The Culpepper Family Tree states “as many as five of their children died of smallpox bef. 1860 and are said to be buried in / near Sarrepti, Calhoun, MS.” All would have been born prior to 1852.

The 1860 census of Calhoun, MS includes the household of Allen’s widowed stepmother, Rua Guthrie, 56, and his siblings Martha, 19, Mary 16, and Ransom, 11. However, Sarah and her children are not listed there, nor found on any other census lists. They may have been on the move at that time. The 1870 census of Marshall County, Mississippi requires study, but appears to fit this family. View the original image rather than just the transcription.

The Head of Household is S E Guthrie (Not J E Guthrie), a female, listed as the Housekeeper, personal estate valued at $100, born in MS. Listed with her are 4 others: Thomas 21 mw farmer PE: $100 born MS; Jane 18 fw born AL; William 20 mw born MS; Washington 16 mw. This is Sarah, Owen T (apparently Thomas), his new wife Jane (Hicks) (m. in Jan), sons William and (George) Washington.

Sarah died on 8 January 1896 in Limestone County, Texas. She was buried at Plummer Cemetery.

GUTHRIE CHILDREN: 4

CHILD 1: JOHN GUTHRIE
Born abt. 1843 MS – Died aft. 1850
Marital Status: Unknown

John Guthrie may or may not have been Allen and Sarah Ann’s first child since they appear to have been married a few years by the time of John’s estimated birth in 1843. Notes on the family suggest that there may have been several young children not captured by census records who died of smallpox.

John Guthrie’s only appearance in the records is found during the 1850 census of Pontotoc, MS when he was 7 years of age. His father died in 1852. If he was alive at the time, John would only have been about 9 years old. He would have been about 17 during the 1860 census, but the entire family is missing from the census that year. They would likely have still been in Mississippi as the remainder of the family is found in Marshall, MS in 1870.

Presumably, John Guthrie died in his youth.

CHILD 2: OWEN THOMAS GUTHRIE
Born abt. 1847 MS – Died aft. 1880 AR
Spouse: Jane Hicks
m. 5 Jan 1870 in Hardeman County, TN

Owen Guthrie is the oldest surviving son of Allen and Sarah Ann. With the identification of the family in the 1800 census, his middle initial T has been determined to stand for Thomas. He was born about 1847 in Pontotoc, Mississippi. He was listed as 3 years old during the 1850 census along with his parents and brothers: John (7), and William (1).

His father died when he was only about 5 years of age in 1852. The family has not been found in the 1860 census. At 23 years of age, Owen Guthrie married Jane Hicks on 5 January 1870 in Hardeman County, TN. This county is just across the State Line from Marshall, which is directly north of Lafayette County. This may have been a place of convenience or elopement.

Although the marriage and census records all simply list her as Jane. She was reportedly a daughter of John Hicks and Euphania Goodman. That couple married in 1850 Jefferson, Alabama and continued to reside there during the Civil War. The 1860 census of Flat Creek, Jefferson, AL lists them with a daughter, Margaret J Hix (7) and four other children. This connection may be oral family history, but if it is recorded anywhere the details have yet to be found.

Owen and Jane had three children: Francis Elizabeth (1871), Eugene Pinckney (1874), and Luella (1877). The first two children were born in Mississippi, and the third in Arkansas reportedly in Harrison, Boone County. Between 1877 and 1880, Owen’s wife Jane died. Her burial location is unknown, but presumably in Arkansas.

The 1880 Census finds Owen T Guthrey living in Richland, Searcy, Arkansas with his mother, Sarah A Guthrey (59), and his children: Francis M (8), Pinkney E (6), and Eller J (3). He was working as a farm laborer.

Heffley Family Tree Info informs us that “Owen (Guthrie) came to Newton County (Arkansas) from Texas in 1883.” If he had gone to Texas, it was potentially to see his brother William Thomas Guthrie who was living Limestone County by that time and married Amanda Ellen Plummer in 1881. His mother also moved to that location and eventually died in Limestone County, TX, so that move would make sense.

In 1883, his children would be between 6 and 12 years of age. In 1884, the name Sarah Guthrie shows up in Newton, AR land records acquiring a patent for 40 acres and immediately selling it to J. Ellis later filed in 1887. Owen Guthrie presumably died about this time. The Guthrie name does not show up in available court record indexes online. Details of Owen’s death and burial are unknown.

Daughter Francis Elizabeth married at age 16 on 29 Dec 1887 in Newton, Arkansas to William Bailey Heffley. Her younger sister, Luella married Thomas Jefferson Heffley. Their marriage license lists Eller as 15, but according to her listed DOB of 25 Aug 1877, she would only have been 13 at the time. Eugene married later on 6 July 1889 in Monroe County, Arkansas to Nova Dona Taylor.

CHILD 3: WILLIAM T GUTHRIE
Born 1849 MS – Died 1922 TX
Spouse: Amanda Ellen Plummer

Documentation lists this son as William T Guthrie. His Find-a-Grave memorial page indicates that his middle name was Thomas. He was born in Pontotoc County, Mississippi on 22 November 1849, and was listed as a 1 year old on the 1850 census with his parents and older siblings, John and Owen.

His father’s murder at the hands of a neighbor in 1852 likely brought significant changes to the family’s welfare. William’s youngest brother was born that year. Their location in 1860 during the US Census is unknown. By 1870 they had relocated to Marshall County, Mississippi, where their mother was listed as the Head of Household, newly married (Owen) Thomas (21), a farmer, was present with his wife Jane (18), along with William (20) and (George) Washington 16.

William remained single for another decade. The 1880 census places him in Limestone, Texas, a farmer working for and/or boarding with an Elizabeth Glynn, 77, and neighbors of the Plummers, including his future wife, Amanda Ellen Plummer, who was then 18, and living in the household of her widowed mother, Angeline (Glenn) Plummer. He married Amanda about 1881, no marriage record found at this time.

They had five children prior between 1882 and 1894, two of whom died during their infancy or early childhood. The 1900 census of Limestone County, Texas lists them with Thomas V (12), Joannie (9), and Mary J (5). They owned their own farm and employed others in 1910 and were listed as married for 29 years. Their daughters Joanna (19) and Mary Jane (16) were still single and living at home. Thomas V (22) had married within the year to Annie May Boyd (21) and they were also in the household, along with Amanda’s niece Buna Plummer (24).

By the 1920 census in Fallon, Limestone, TX, only Will (74), Amanda (68) and their youngest daughter Mary Jane “Mollie” (26) remained at the farm. William died two years later on 15 April 1922. He was 72. His widow Amanda lived another 23 years. She died at 83 years of age in Mexia, Limestone, TX on 5 October 1945. They are buried at Plummer Cemetery in Limestone County, TX.

CHILD 4: GEORGE WASHINGTON GUTHRIE
Born 1852 MS – Died 1918 AR
Spouse: Ruth Springer

George Washington Guthrie was born 18 April 1852 only a few months prior to his father’s murder in Sarepta, Calhoun County, Mississippi. The location of the family in 1860 is presumably somewhere in Mississippi as they were living in Waterford, Marshall, Mississippi during the 1870 census. ‘Washington’ was listed as being 16 at the time, although he was probably already 17 or 18.

About 1874, he married Ruth Springer of Big Creek, Fulton, Arkansas. They settled there and raised a large family on their home farm. By 1910, Ruth had given birth to 13 children, 8 of whom were living. George Washington Guthrie was 65 at his death on 7 March 1918. His widow Ruth lived until 16 October 1936. She was 77 at the time. They are buried at Elizabeth Cemetery in Fulton County, Arkansas.
