NOTES:

Stephen Guthrie’s birth location is listed in trees as North Carolina, and that data is found in an 1880 census record of his son, Dempsey. The exact area of the NC colony is unknown, but his father Levi is associated with Halifax County during the Revolutionary War, which took place shortly after Stephen’s birth.

The family appears to have moved to Green County, KY and then to Adair County, KY.

Stephen Guthrie may have been married 2 or 3 times. The records conflict with each other and thinking about it gives me a headache!
Digital of Original: Stephen Gutrie & Betsey Grider, minister John White, Date: Jany. 5th 1804
Another copy: Stephen Gutrie & Betsey Grider, minister John White, Date: Jany. 5th 1804
Typed with Different DOM/Spelling Variant: Gutherie, Stephen and Betsey Grider, July 2, 1803.
Typed with Different Spouse/Spelling/Original DOM: Stephen Guthrie and Sarah Hawes 5 Jan 1804
Then there’s his last marriage to Mrs Hannah (Pope) Northrip Godsey reportedly on 24 Oct 1827 in Russell, KY for which no marriage record has been found, but she is named in other documents.

Obviously, Sarah Hawes did not marry Stephen Guthrie on the same day as Betsey Grider. Betsey is the only one with an original document, so unless the bride’s name was listed in error, it seems that Betsey is the correct choice. There is no mention of Stephen’s wife’s name in property records except for those in Russell County, KY identifying his wife Hannah.

Note that the marriage between Stephen Gutrie and Betsy Grider is a later entry on the same page as the marriage of Beverly Guthrie to Patience Grider found in the 1803 entries.

Although Stephen is credited with several daughters based on the census records, their identity remains unknown. There were 3 sons: Abidjah, Martin, and Dempsey.

The 1810 Census of Columbia, Adair, KY – The Stephen Guthrie Household:
1M and 1F 26-44, 2M and 1F under 10. Total Household Members = 5.

On 19 March 1813, Beverly Guthrie of Adair, KY sold to Stephen Guthrie of the same county a tract of 17 acres for $100. Part of a survey in Adair, KY made for Beverly Guthrie of 77 acres lying on the waters of Crocus Creek. (Signed) Beverly Guthrie. Witnesses: Andrew Hays, James Hays. (Book C pp.301-302)

Later that year on 13 Sep 1813, Levi Guthrie of Adair, KY sold to Stephen Guthrie of the same county and state for $200 a tract of 73 acres on Crocus Creek. (Signed) Levi Guthrie. Witnesses: James Hays, Peggy Hays. Recorded 9 Mar 1814. (Book C pp.366-368)

Stephen’s brothers and sister moved on to Illinois before 1820, but Stephen remained in Kentucky.

The 1820 Census of Adair County, KY – The Stephen Guthery Household:
1M and 1F 26-44, 2M 10-15, 1M and 1F under 10. Engaged in Agriculture: 2 Persons. Total Household Members = 6.

Stephen’s wife Betsey (Grider) Guthrie died between 1820 and 1827, either in Adair or Pulaski County, KY.

At the age of 52, on 24 Oct 1827 in Russell County, Kentucky, Stephen Guthrie married Mrs Hannah (Pope) Northrip, the widow of John Northrup. Stephen was her third husband, the first being Samuel Godsey.

The 1830 Census of Pulaski County, KY – The Stephen Guthrie Household:
1M and 1F 50-59, 1F 15-19, 1M and 2F 10-14. Total Household Members = 6.

Stephen and Hannah Guthrie of Pulaski County, KY purchased property in Russell County, KY on 7 November 1833 from Robert Vermillion of Russell County. For the consideration of $275 hand paid they received a tract of land in Russell County on the waters of Crocus Creek containing 73 acres. (Book B – 389)

Note that Russell County KY was formed in 1825 from sections of Adair, Cumberland, and Wayne, KY. Considering this Russell County property was the same size acreage on Crocus Creek that his father Levi sold to him in 1813, it seems possible that he had sold it prior to moving to Pulaski and was now buying it back. If so, the transaction is missing or was missed being indexed.

One of the unidentified daughters enumerated in the 1830 census is potentially Stephen’s stepdaughter Sally Northrip. Stephen and Hannah Guthrie were noted to be the consenting partied for the marriage of their daughter Sally Northrip to James Bethurum on 24 Dec 1832 in Pulaski, KY. Census records estimate her birth year between 1813 – 1816.

Stephen Guthrie is believed to have died prior to the 1840 census.

Only Ebyah Guthrie listed on the 1840 Russell County, KY Census: 1M 30-39, 1F 20-29, 1F 10-14, 1M and 1F 5-9, 1M and 1F under 5. Persons Employed in Agriculture: 5. Total Household Members = 7. This is most likely Stephen and Betsy’s son, Abijah Guthrie, who is found in property records listed as Abigal.

Y-DNA Project Participants: YES
Autosomal DNA Participants: YES

CHILD 1: (UNIDENTIFIED DAUGHTER) GUTHRIE
Born 1804 – 1809 KY – Died Aft. 1810
Marital Status: Unknown

The 1810 census lists a female under the age of 10, providing a birth range of 1800-1809. If adjusted for Stephen and Betsy’s Jan 1804 DOM, that narrows this daughter’s DOM to 1804-1809. There is only 1 daughter in the household in 1820, aged under 10, so she cannot be this child. If her DOB was 1804 she would be about 16 and just about marriageable age. Possible this daughter married about 1820 and was out of the household, or died young. There are no Adair County, KY marriages for a Gut* search.

OBIT: Cumberland County Kentucky Yesterday and Today, Ruth Wooten, p. 277
Abijah Guthrie died April 9, 1865, of internal bleeding following surgery for a
large mole on his back. According to tradition, he sat on a chair under a tree
in his yard while the physician removed the mole, which was connected to his
body by only a small neck. Bleeding was so severe that the wound was
cauterized with a hot iron. Internal bleeding then began and resulted in his
death. He reportedly is buried in an old cemetery in the vicinty of
Seventy-Six with a large fieldstone slab with the initials A.G. carved on it.
