NOTES:

The paper trail linking Dempsey Guthrie to his parents and siblings is thin. There may be family documents that provide more evidence. His mother Elizabeth (Yamons) Guthrie died in Montgomery County, Illinois where Dempsey was residing. Y-DNA evidence proves that Dempsey and his presumed brother Stephen do share a common paternal ancestor. The name Dempsey is also used in Stephen’s family for one of his sons, and in Priscilla’s family for one of hers.

Dempsey is also listed in some trees with the middle name ‘Lee’, but without an original source. If you have information/evidence, please share it, otherwise this man will officially be listed as Dempsey Guthrie.

Many have also been incorrectly documenting the name of Dempsey’s first wife. Property records reveal that the name of his wife was “Elizabeth Ellen”. Most trees currently list a Margaret Dikis (Dice, Dikes) as his wife, but woman married Dempsey Milton Guthrie (1849-1920), the grandson of this Dempsey Guthrie.

No marriage record has yet been discovered, but Dempsey presumably married Elizabeth Ellen (MNU) about 1797. Census records reveal she was most likely born about 1780-1781 as she seems to be on the cusp of two age brackets. Dempsey Guthrie appears on the Green County, Kentucky Tax Lists for the year 1800. They moved from Kentucky to Illinois and lived primarily in Madison County. Both Dempsey and his brother Beverly Guthrie are listed in the Madison, IL census of 1818.

The 1820 Census of Ridge Prairie, Madison, IL – The Demcey Guthrie Household
1M 45 and over (bef.1776); 3M and 2F 26-44 (1776-1794); 2M and 3F 10-15 (1805-1810); 1M and 2F under 10 (1811-1820); 3 Foreigners not Naturalized; 2 Engaged in Agriculture. Total Free White Persons / Household Members = 18.

The oldest of Dempsey and Elizabeth’s children, William Guthrie, was born in 1799 according to later census years. He was already married in 1819, and is listed in his own household in Ridge Prairie in 1820. So he is not enumerated in the above census. Brother Beverly Guthrie and brother-in-law John Hadley also had their own households in Goshen, Madison, IL in 1820. Dempsey Guthrie was known to have a “horse-mill” in Illinois by 1818, so the “foreigners” living in the household could potentially be workers.

The 1830 Census of Madison, IL – Dempse Guthrie Household
1M 50-59 (1771-1780), 1F 40-49 (1781-1790), 2F 30-39 (1791-1800), 1M 20-29 (1801-1810), 2F 15-19 (1811-1815), 1M and 3F 10-14 (1816-1820). Total Free White Persons / Household Members = 11.

The 1840 Census of Ridge Prairie, Madison, IL – Dempsey Guther Household
1M and 1F 60-69 (1771-1780). 1F 20-29 (1811-1820), 1M 15-19 (1821-1825), 1F 10-14 (1825-1830). Total Free White Persons / Household Members = 5.

The 8 Guthrie children should be credited to Elizabeth, who died between 1840-1843. Dempsey remarried on 13 August 1844 to widow Keziah (Foxwell) Lay in Montgomery County, Illinois where the couple settled. He was 70 and she was 50 at the time of their marriage.

The 1850 Census of Southwest, Montgomery, Illinois, USA – The Dempsey Guthry Household
Demsey Guthry, 76, m, Farmer, Real Estate Value 500 – born NC
Cisire Guthry 56, f – born MD
William Guthry 22, m – born Ill
Harriett Guthry 13, f – born Ill, attended school
Note: William and Harriett are Kesiah’s children by her first marriage to William Lay.

Kesiah is not listed on the 1860 census with Dempsey, so is presumed to have died between 1850-1860. Dempsey, age 86, is found living with his son Henry Guthrie and family near Walshville, Montgomery, IL during the 1860 census.

Dempsey died in Montgomery, IL on 1 February 1860.

GUTHRIE CHILDREN: 8
Y-DNA Project Participants: YES
Autosomal DNA Participants: NO

CHILD 1: WILLIAM GUTHRIE
Abt. 1799KY – 1876IA
Spouse 1: Lucy Vincent (m. 10 Oct 1819 IL)
Spouse 2: Agnes H Ballard (m. 15 Oct 1848 IL)

William Guthrie was born about 1799 in Kentucky, most likely in Green County where his father shows up on the tax list for 1800. They moved to Madison County, Illinois where his father operated a horse mill by 1818. William’s marriage to Lucy Vincent is recorded the following year on 10 Oct 1819. They were listed in Ridge Prairie, Madison, Illinois during the 1820 census with William Guthrie as the Head of Household:
3M 16-25, 1F 16-25, and 1M under 10, with 1 Engaged in Agriculture. William’s name is listed next to that of his father’s for the same township.

William and Lucy were parents to 8 known children born between 1827 and 1844. There may have been a couple of other children enumerated in the 1820 and 1830 censuses whose identities are unknown. The 1820 census lists 1 male under 10, likely an infant born in 1820. The 1830 census lists no male in the 5-9 or 10-15 range, suggesting the first son had died young. It does list 1 female of 5-9, born 1821-1825, and 3 males under 5, born 1826-1830. Son Dempsey was born about 1827, and daughter Lucy not until 1830, so the female of 5-9 remains unidentified, and only 1 of the 3 sons.

The 1840 Census of Ridge Prairie, Madison, IL – Wm Guthrie household
1M 40-49 (1791-1800), 1F 30-39 (1801-1830), 1F 15-19 (1821-1825), 2M 10-14 (1826-1830), 1M and 1F 5-9 (1831-1835), 1M and 1F under 5 (1836-1840). 3 persons in Agriculture.

Lucy (Vincent Guthrie died between 1844 and 1848. William Guthrie married Mrs. Agnes H. (Ballard) Brooks, the widow of Stephen M Brooks. She had 3 children with her first husband and six Guthrie children.

Always check original images when copying data into your trees. The 1850 Census on Ancestry contains a transcription error translating Lucy’s middle name Jane into a surname James, which results in several of the Guthrie children being listed with the James surname.

CHILD 2: THEODOSHA “DOSHA” GUTHRIE
1803KY – 1838IL
Spouse 1: William Scanland (m. 4 Nov 1821 IL)
Spouse 2: William Billings (m. 12 Mar 1829 IL)

Dosha Guthrie was born about 1802 in Kentucky. The family settled in Madison County, Illinois where she married on 4 November 1821 to William Scanland. Tragically, William died on the 19th of November, only 15 days after their marriage. The marriage and death were reported in the Edwardsville Spectator the following month in the same announcement section.

It wasn’t until 1829 that Dosha married again. The marriage to William Billings took place on 12 March 1829 in Madison County, Illinois. Three sons were born between 1831 and 1838. Dosha died on 26 Nov 1838 and laid to rest at Old Manchester Cemetery. According to the notes at Find-a-Grave, Dosha has a stone of her own listing her age as 35y 8m and 17 days, while an inscription on her husband William Billings’ memorial lists 35y, 8m and 26 days. This would make her birthdate either 28 Feb or 9 Mar 1803 since 1803 was not a leap year

Dosha was probably back in her parents’ household during the 1820 census. The Wm Billings household in Morgan, Illinois in 1830 may be the only census record to capture Dosha as a married woman. They are enumerated as 1M and 1F 20-29. Their three sons were: Dempsey Milton (1831), Henry C (1834), and William Armenius (1838).

After Dosha’s death, William Billings remarried to Sarah Chapman on 5 Aug 1839 in Greene County, IL. They settled in Manchester, Scott, IL by 1850 and remained there. They had 3 sons and 3 daughters: John F (1841), Marion Arding (1842), Martha E (1846), Sarah A (1849), Joseph P (1856), Isabell (1859), and Laurabelle (1859).

CHILD 3: MARY GUTHRIE aka ‘POLLY’
1806KY – 1839IL
Spouse 1: John Robinson (m. 6 Sep 1821 IL)
Spouse 2: Anderson Batterton (m. 2 Jul 1829 IL)

Polly Guthrie was born about 1804, probably in Green County, Kentucky. She was still young when her parents moved to Madison County, Illinois. She married there to John Robinson on 6 September 1821. They had 1 known son, Dempsey Robinson, born in 1824. John Robinson died in 1827, and so Polly remarried on 2 July 1829 to Anderson Batterton, a son of Amor and Ida Nancy (Guthrie) Batterton adding to the Guthrie-Batterton connections from previous generations.

Anderson and Polly had three children: Dosha A (1830), John Arthur (1833), and Hannah Louisa (1839), and they were born in Madison County, Illinois. Ten years into their marriage, Polly died on 13 January 1839. Another decade passed before Anderson remarried. On 4 Feb 1839, in either Madison or Sangamon County, Illinois, Anderson Batterton married Isabell Ensminger. They went on to have 12 Batterton children, who are all Guthrie descendants since his mother was a Guthrie, so technically they all qualify for the Guthrie Autosomal DNA Project. Being associated with the Battertons makes it highly likely that Ida Nancy (Guthrie) Batterton was probably associated with GFG5, but her placement within the Guthrie tree remains unknown, therefore her status remains officially ‘ungrouped’.

CHILD 4: HENRY ANDREW GUTHRIE

Spouse 1: Cynthia L Lawrence (and/or Marks) (m. 11 Mar 1828 IL)
Spouse 2: Mrs. Frances ‘Fanny’ (MNU) Tuthill / Tuttle (m. 29 Oct 1846 IL)

Henry Andrew Guthrie was born about 1807 in Kentucky and was still a boy when his family settled in Madison County, Illinois. He was about 21 at the time of his marriage to Cynthia L Lawrence. The 1830 census of Madison County, IL lists the couple and their daughter: 1M 20-29, 1F 15-19, and 1F under 5. Cynthia either died or the couple divorced by 1848. Their only known child was Harriett Ann Guthrie whose 1912 death certificate lists her mother’s surname as Marks. The family is not found in the 1840 census.

Henry served as a private soldier during the Black Hawk War in Barnsback’s Company, Regiment 1, Whiteside brigade having entered the service at Edwardsville, Illinois.

He married for a second time on 22 Nov 1848 to Mrs Frances ‘Fanny’ Tuttle or Tuthill. She was a widow with three young daughters: Mary J (1835), Fanny E (1837), and Sarah B (1842). Henry and Fanny had one son, Chester Solomon Guthrie, born in 1848.

CHILD 6: JAMES GUTHRIE
1809KY – 1871IL
Marital Status: Unknown

This son is listed with the family as being born about 1809 and living until he was about 62 years old, but he is not attached to any of the census records with names on them. Dempsey’s household in 1840 did not have a son living there in the right age range. The 1830 census still had 2 sons living at home, ages 20-29 and 10-14. Son Henry was already in his own household by 1830. Son Milton was not married until 1834, so he is presumably the male of 20-29. Either James was already out of the household by 1830 or his birth year of 1809 is wrong making him the younger male listed in the enumerations.

CHILD 8: NANCY GUTHRIE
1810KY – 1839 (KY or IL)
Spouse: John D Scanland

Nancy Guthrie was born about 1810 in Kentucky or Illinois. She married John Daugherty Scanland in Madison, IL on 11 Dec 1827. He was a shoemaker. According to at least one family tree, they had five children: Mary Margaret (1832), John G (1837), Dotia (1840), Laura (1842), and “Levia” (1846). The 1840 census of Ridge Prairie, Madison, IL lists them as: 3M and 1F 20-29, 1 M 15-19, 2F 10-14, 1F 5-9, 2M under 5. Since there are 2 young males listed and only 3 daughters, is “Levia” actually a son, “Levi”? Son John died in 1849 of cholera. Nancy (Guthrie) Scanland died fore 24 Oct 1848 when husband John remarried to Martha Wheeler. Suspect that the other younger children might also have died young as they are not on the 1850 census.

The 1850 census of Collinsville, Madison, IL includes:
John D Scanland 43 m shoe maker born Virginia
Martha Scanland 29 f born Pennsylvania
Mary M Scanland 18 f born Illinois
Laura E Scanland 9 f born Illinois attended school

John Hadley was born in Maryland in 1776, of English parents, and when a young man went to Kentucky, where he married a lady by the name of Guthrie. This family came from Virginia and settled in Madison county at a very early date. In 1817 Mr Hadley removed with his family to Illinois, and settled on Pleasant Ridge, in this township, June 20th of that year. He was a volunteer in the ranging service of 1812. He reared a family of children, who grew up and settled around him. Of his sons, James, Dempsey, and William, only one, William, is now living. Dempsey died here, and James died in Missouri, whence he moved a few years ago. William Hadley was born in Kentucky in 1806, and is well known to many of the citizens of the county. He is a Methodist minister, and was among the early preachers in Madison. At present he is living at Carbondale in this State, while members of his family are still residents of this county.
