Primary Sources

(Original records created near the time of events by participants or officials; these provide direct evidence of birth/death dates, residences, family relationships, land ownership, and household composition.)

Cemetery and Gravestone Records (tombstone inscriptions and burial registers offer death dates, ages, and spouse links; often the only surviving “vital” marker for this era):

  • William Guthrie (b. Jul 1777 Westmoreland Co., PA; d. 2 Apr 1865 Salem Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA), buried Delmont Presbyterian Cemetery, Delmont, Westmoreland Co., PA. Find A Grave Memorial #51110431 (includes basic bio confirming dates and county; one photo attached but no legible gravestone image in public view; maintained/created by contributors).
  • Agnes “Nancy” Dixon Guthrie (d. 31 Jul 1808 Westmoreland Co., PA), buried Poke Run Church Cemetery, Poke Run, Westmoreland Co., PA. Find A Grave Memorial #35413975 (explicitly names her as consort/wife of William Guthrie, son of John Guthrie Esq.; one photo attached; created by Burke Stoughton, maintained by Margaret Krecota).
  • Mary Hill Guthrie (b. ~1788–89 PA; d. 1860 Salem Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA), buried Delmont Presbyterian Cemetery (same plot as William; confirmed via family compiled records and children’s memorials; no separate Find A Grave memorial located in public searches, but consistent with cemetery association in secondary accounts). Implications: Presbyterian church affiliation ties the family to local congregations (Delmont and Poke Run), useful for potential session/minute books.

Probate and Will Records (key for confirming death date, heirs, property distribution, and spousal status; William’s will directly names or implies children and second wife Mary):

  • Last Will and Testament of William Guthrie of Salem Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, dated circa 1864–65 and proved 1865. Westmoreland County Will Book 3, pp. 571–573 (also indexed as Vol. 4 p. 571 in some county will indexes, 1773–1896). Original at Westmoreland County Courthouse or digitized on Ancestry (Pennsylvania Wills & Probate Records collection). Context: Farmer’s estate likely distributes the homestead (inherited from father John) among sons like Samuel Dixon Guthrie (unmarried, lived on farm) and daughters. Edge case: Pre-1850s wills often omit full birth dates but list relationships explicitly.

Land/Deed Records (critical for proving inheritance, residence in Salem Twp., and family connections; William appears as grantee/heir in father’s estate settlements):

  • Westmoreland County Deeds, Vol. 3, p. 168 (10 Apr 1797; recorded Nov 1797): James Guthrie and William Guthrie of Salem Township bind themselves regarding Mary Guthrie (widow of John Guthrie Esq.) enjoying personal estate/provisions while unmarried. Witnesses include Samuel Porter.
  • Westmoreland County Deeds, Vol. 9, p. 262 (10 Apr 1797; recorded 15 Apr 1811): Quitclaim by John Guthrie (Washington Twp.), William Guthrie of Salem Twp., William Beatty, James Beatty, and James Porterfield to James and William Guthrie for estate of John Guthrie Esq. Witness: Samuel Porter, James Hill.
  • Westmoreland County Deeds, Vol. 2 Part 2, p. 562 (Mar 1797): John Guthrie sells 242-acre tract (homestead) to James and William Guthrie (provisions for widow Mary). These deeds confirm William’s lifelong residence on the paternal farm and tie him to siblings (e.g., James). Digitized in county records or Ancestry Pennsylvania Land Records. Nuance: Early deeds use “Guthry/Guthery” spelling variants common in Scots-Irish families.

U.S. Federal Census Records (household composition, occupations as “farmer,” ages, and presence of wives/children; Salem Twp. enumerations place him consistently):

  • 1830 U.S. Census, Salem Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (transcribed online at RootsWeb/PAGenWeb; William Guthrie household: males/females matching family sizes post-second marriage).
  • 1810, 1820, 1840, 1850, and 1860 U.S. Census, Salem Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (images available on FamilySearch and Ancestry; 1850/1860 likely list William with Mary or widowed, plus children like Samuel Dixon Guthrie on homestead; occupations “farmer”; ages align with 1777 birth). Implications: Pre-1850 censuses are head-of-household only, requiring cross-check with children’s later records; 1860 confirms widowhood after Mary’s ~1860 death.

Church, Marriage, and Other Vital Records (sparse for early 1800s but confirmatory for children’s events tying back to parents):

  • Approximate marriages: William to Agnes “Nancy” Dixon (~1802–1803 Westmoreland Co.; inferred from first three sons’ births); to Mary Hill (~1808 Westmoreland Co.; inferred from 1809 daughter birth). No digitized county license found; likely in Westmoreland marriage indexes or Presbyterian session records (Poke Run/Delmont churches).
  • Example child event: Marriage of daughter Mary Guthrie to Thomas Kirkwood McQuaide, 9 Mar 1843 (possibly Congruity Presbyterian Church, Westmoreland Co.; referenced in compiled records). Samuel Dixon Guthrie’s unmarried status confirmed via probate/census. Context: Scots-Irish Presbyterian communities kept session books for baptisms/marriages/burials.

Newspaper and Obituary Records (contemporary death notices or family mentions):

  • Butler Citizen (Butler, PA), 29 Jan 1892, p. 2: Obituary of daughter Martha Hill Guthrie Chambers (b. 1811; d. 23 Jan 1892), naming parents implicitly via Armstrong Co. residence and quoting interment in Apollo (ties back to William’s family).
