19-A: Donald Guthrie (Aberdeen)
Guthrie Family Group 19 – Branch A
DONALD GUTHRIE (Farmer) bef.1762 -1830 SCT and MARY MATTHEW
of Aberdeenshire, Scotland

ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG19 – BRANCH A
This branch of GFG9 lived in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Donald Guthrie and Mary Matthew married in 1778. There are 19 Guthrie grooms with marriages registered in Aberdeen between 1584 and 1761. None of these are specifically documented in Ellon Parish. One is documented in Cruden, another parish that is connected to this family, the marriage of Alexander Guthrie and Margaret Moir on 9 Feb 1751. There are 103 Guthrie children listed in the Old Parish Registers in Aberdeenshire between 1553 and 1780. The only Ellon entries are children of Donald And Mary. None are listed with a baptism in Cruden parish. Knowing that both GFG19 branches have to share a common paternal line ancestor, it is possible that Donald Guthrie came to Aberdeenshire from Inverness-shire, Scotland.
Only 1 birth record is found in Inverness-shire with a child by the name of Donald:
Donald Guthry – Parents: John Guthry / Beak McPherson – 07 Jul 1734 – Residence: Nold
However, there are 44 years between the birth of John’s son and the marriage of Branch A’s Donald Guthrie and Mary Matthew. A late marriage or second marriage would not be out of the question, but it could also indicate the presence of a missing or undocumented generation. Several Kingussie and Insh couples are listed in the OPR with children born in the mid-1700s: Donald Guthry/Janet McIntyre (1730s), David Guthrie/ Katharine Kennedy (1740s), Dugal Guthrie/Janet McPherson (1740s), Alexander Guthrie/Christian McIntyre (1740s-1750s).
Then there is the marriage of a Donald Guthrie to Katharine Rose on 10 Sep 1654 in Inverness. Although there is no guarantee that the group’s direct paternal line leads back to a man named Donald the fact that both branches include the name is a significant clue. This is the earliest Guthrie marriage in Inverness-shire.
