The Commissariot Record of Aberdeen: Register of Testaments
The principal published secondary source for this court is The Commissariot Record of Aberdeen: Register of Testaments, 1715–1800, edited by John Macleod and issued by the Scottish Record Society (Edinburgh: James Skinner & Company, 1899; Scottish Record Society Publications, No. 6). It indexes approximately 3,500 confirmed testaments (wills and inventories of moveable estate) recorded in the Aberdeen Commissary Court. Earlier registers before 1715 were destroyed by fire and do not survive. The original primary records are held at the National Records of Scotland under reference CC1 (Aberdeen Commissary Court, covering parts of Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, Kincardineshire, and Moray).
These records are especially useful for Guthrie research because they frequently supply occupation, residence, marital status, next-of-kin relationships, and inventories of goods—valuable details for placing individuals within the north-east Scottish branches of the family.
