This index gathers Guthrie references from the National Library of Scotland’s Archives & Manuscripts collections. The records range from charters, sasines, reversions and contracts to correspondence, notarial instruments, church records and later manuscript copies.
Unlike a single printed volume, this is a repository-based finding aid. The value lies in reading related references together: a sequence of shelfmarks can reveal succession, landholding, marriage, office, debt, patronage or the movement of property across generations.
Current Index Scope: The systematically gathered batches presently cover the 1400s, 1500s, 1600s, and records for which no date is stated. The 1700s and 1800s are not yet represented as completed review batches, so this page should not be read as a complete all-century survey of the NLS catalogue.

Eassie & Hiltoun · A Documented Succession
The 1545–1546 sequence is one of the strongest genealogical clusters in the index. NLS Ch.14167 records Alexander Guthrie of Guthrie issuing a precept of clare constat to John Guthrie of Hilton; the following 10 May 1546 charter and sasine identify John as John Guthrie of Esse and place him in Hilton and Easttown of Guthrie.

From 1538/9 through 1571/2, the Stotfauld and Petmowis records repeatedly name Sir James Guthrie, Mr John Guthrie and later Patrick Guthrie. Charters, reversions, sasines and confirmations can be read together as a property-and-succession dossier.
Hilton, Langlands & the Collegiate Church of Guthrie
The late-sixteenth-century Ch.14171–14189 sequence documents teinds, the provostry and prebendary of Guthrie, Hilton and Langlands, and transfers involving Alexander and Gabriel Guthrie before those interests passed toward the Lindsay family.
Balnabreich · James Guthrie and His Family
The Balnabreich material includes James Guthrie of Easter Balnabreich, his wife Christian Barron, their son and heir Mr James Guthrie, and an undated damaged contract whose witness list names Thomas Guthrie as James's natural son. These are high-value family-structure records, but the undated item should remain chronologically cautious.
Kincaldrum · Early Seventeenth-Century Land Records
The 1611–1635 Kincaldrum group preserves a compact run of charters, sasines and related documents naming David Guthrie and later Alexander Guthrie of Kincaldrum. It is especially useful when compared with the Kincaldrum profile and the later Guthrie-of-Guthrie succession.
Civic, Clerical & Historical Guthries
The collection reaches beyond landed families: Alexander Guthrie appears as Edinburgh Town Clerk and notary; John Guthrie as Bishop of Moray; and Henry Guthrie, Bishop of Dunkeld, through manuscript copies and criticism of his Civil-War memoirs. These records belong to different documentary traditions and should not be treated as one family cluster.

Sir Alexander Guthrie of Guthrie | 1490; pre-1513 / 1513 note | Scotland | Manuscript | The work was written in 1490 for the instruction of James IV, but this may not be the copy intended for presentation to the king. Sir Alexander Guthrie of Guthrie was a later owner of the sole surviving manuscript copy who added a prominent donation inscription recording his own gift of that copy—not to the king, but to a church aisle his family had endowed. There is a signed inscription recording his gift of the volume to the church of Guthrie (folio 7 verso) and a note recording his death and that of Alexander Strathachin of Balmady at Flodden in 1513 (folio 359 verso).
