Commissariot of Brechin
The Commissariot Record of Brechin: Register of Testaments
The Commissariot of Brechin was the ecclesiastical court responsible for confirming testaments across a significant portion of historic Angus (Forfarshire), including the burghs of Brechin, Dundee, and Montrose, as well as the surrounding rural parishes. The published abstracts of its Register of Testaments, edited by Francis J. Grant and issued by the Scottish Record Society, cover the period from the late sixteenth century through the eighteenth century. Because this region was a long-standing heartland of the Guthrie family—home to the main line of Guthrie of that Ilk and numerous cadet branches—these records are especially rich in Guthrie material. Entries frequently name merchants, ministers, landowners, and burgesses, along with their spouses and children, making the Brechin Commissariot one of the most valuable sources for reconstructing Guthrie genealogies in eastern Scotland.
