The Commissariot Record of Glasgow: Register of Testaments

The Commissariot of Glasgow was the principal ecclesiastical court for the confirmation of testaments across a wide area of west-central Scotland, encompassing the city of Glasgow itself together with large parts of Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, Lanarkshire, and neighbouring districts. The published abstracts of its Register of Testaments, edited by Francis J. Grant for the Scottish Record Society, cover the period from the mid-sixteenth century to 1800. Although the Guthrie surname is less concentrated here than in Angus, the records still yield a useful series of entries for families settled in Ayrshire parishes such as Craigie, Riccarton, Loudoun, and Irvine, as well as occasional appearances in Glasgow and surrounding burghs. These testaments help trace both local Ayrshire branches and individuals who moved westward from the family’s traditional eastern strongholds.
