The Latest

The holidays are here and so are those exciting DNA sales events across the board. Most companies are running some kind of special, so if you’re not sure about what kind of test you want or where to buy one, do a little research first, or ask for some tips. Now is the time to Upgrade existing Y-DNA tests as there are some great savings.

If you’re interested in the Guthrie DNA Project and have not yet purchased your DNA kit, we recommend one of the following:

Ancestry DNA Test
– Type: Autosomal DNA
– Both men and women can take this test
– Biggest database = Most matches
– Project participation simply requires an official ‘viewer’ invitation
– Options for transferring your Raw DNA results to other databases like FTDNA, or myHeritage, etc.

Family Tree DNA
– Type: Y-DNA Paternal Line Testing
– Men only. Tests the Y-chromosome for inherited paternal DNA
– Identify or verify your Guthrie Family Group

Family Tree DNA
– Type: The Big-Y 700 Test
– Upgrade existing an Y-DNA test
– Determines branching within groups
– Provides a better estimation of when the Most Recent Common Ancestor lived.

DNA TESTING and MATCHES

GFG2A – Branch G
Our most recent YDNA match for this group is an adoptee confirming his biological tree. The DNA matches his paper trail and includes those inherited genetic markers unique to Branch G descendants of GFG2A.

During our last update, we announced another new branch for GFG2A: Branch O – Descendants of Ahiel Guthrie and Diantha Bullock. Ahiel Guthrie was also an adoptee but his descendants are still searching for the clues that will pinpoint the identity of his biological father. Thanks to a Y-DNA test from a direct paternal line descendant we already know that Ahiel belongs to GFG2A. The clues we do have point toward GFG2A-Branch F. This month another of Ahiel’s descendants has joined the project with an Autosomal DNA kit matching up with other Branch O descendants and more from GFG2A, including folks from Branch F.

One of our new members has some very distant Guthrie ancestry unlikely to reveal Autosomal Matching in any meaningful way. However, he says another DNA company indicates his YDNA might have a Guthrie connection. He has a Big-Y test pending, so that may prove interesting.

BIG-Y TESTING

Big-Y Results came in for our latest addition to Guthrie Family Group 5, a descendant of Thomas Guthrie and Mildred Howell. This is the couple published in American Guthrie and Allied Families as theoretically linked to GFG2A’s James Guthrie and Miss Bissell.

Log in to the Project > Go to Guthrie DNA Project’s DNA Results > Group Time Tree.

The result for GFG5 currently show that Thomas’ and Shamrock’s Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) Probably lived around 1500.

When descendants from different branches within a group participate in Big-Y testing it can provide a visual of when different lineages divided from the main ancestral line.

Here’s Guthrie Family Group 3’s current results:

COLLABORATIONAs you work on your personal family trees, and come across recommendations to improve, expand, or alter what you find in my Guthrie Research tree, don’t hesitate to contact me. If you think I have an error, please point it out. If you think you’ve made a discovery and want another set of eyeballs to check your findings, I’m totally ready and willing to review it with you.

One recent correspondent found a missing child inadvertently left off a family list during her research into the Guthrie-Kidd family. I was able to find the relevant documentation and added that branch into the tree thanks to her tip.

You are also welcome to submit information that expands on your own family story for inclusion at Guthrie Genealogy, either as a Guest Researcher, Story Teller, or Data Collector.

GUTHRIE FAMILY GROUP GENERATIONS

Guthrie Family Group 4 is the latest focus for our website expansion. Family data has been expanded to include additional generations of descendants of Thomas Guthrey and Sarah Oakes of King William & Cumberland Counties, Virginia.

Guthrie Family Groups > GFG4 > A: Thomas Guthrey > (Child Pages)
Susannah Guthrey
Alexander Guthrey
Travis Guthrey
Henry Guthrey
Elizabeth Guthrey
William Guthrey
Sarah Guthrey
John Guthrey

Bibliographical data, reading recommendations, and links to documents have been added to most of the pages.

As research/resource data is collected, I will try to remember to move it to the main Research & Resources location pages. See: Cumberland VA, for example.

GFG4 has historically been listed only with one major branch: Descendants of Thomas Guthrey and Sarah Oakes. However, the descendants of William Guthrie and Mary Musgrove have also been proven by YDNA testing to belong to GFG4. William’s exact place among Thomas’ descendants is unknown. William Guthrie and Mary Musgrove have previously been the subject of a Family Focus. They and their descendants will be labelled as GFG4-Branch B until we figure out William’s placement in the tree.

Their family is up next as I work to complete the expansion of Guthrie Family Group 4.

But first….

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day here in the USA. I’ll be at work taking care of a few ‘little butterballs’ who decide to make tomorrow their birthday. We’ll take some time during the day to enjoy our Pot Luck Meal and take a few moments to give thanks for our family, friends, and co-workers. Just as I give thanks to all of you for taking part in the Guthrie DNA Project and sharing an interest in our Guthrie history and ancestry.

  1. Ann, a very warm Thanksgiving blessing to you and your family. We do have many things to be thankful for and one of them is you and all you’ve done to help solve so many puzzles and mysteries in this growing Guthrie family. Looking forward to 2024 with more mysteries solved and more precious “little butterballs” joining this old world.

    • Go to your Ancestry DNA, scroll down to Visibility and Sharing, click DNA Test Sharing, click invite, enter my email: anngu3@icloud.com, keep role as ‘viewer’, click invite. I will also need a basic ancestry starting with you and going back to your earliest proven ancestor. I can get started on a review of your Guthrie matches after I get back from a quick vacation next week.

  2. Happy Thanksgiving, Ann. We have done My Heritage. Can we do viewing as well on that platform?

I need to go and look but my husband is traced to one of your current groups that we can send you.

    • We can’t do direct viewing at myheritage, but you can do a free Raw DNA report transfer to Family Tree DNA. You’ll need to download your report from MyHeritage and then create an FTDNA account to upload your results. Once you are assigned a username/kit number, you can sign up to Join the Guthrie DNA Project.
