Register of Bishopric of Brechin
Registrum Episcopatus Brechinensis
The Registrum Episcopatus Brechinensis (2 vols., 1856 Bannatyne Club edition) is the definitive published collection of the medieval and early modern records of the Bishopric of Brechin. It contains the compiled register of acts, chapter declarations, notarial instruments, and (in Vol. 2) original charters. Guthrie family members appear across four centuries as prebendaries, portioners, lairds of specific estates (Kincaldrum, Balnabreche, Pitforthie, Lunan), civic officials (bailie of Brechin), royal/episcopal administrators, and holders of the collegiate church of Guthre itself. This is prime primary evidence for the Angus Guthries’ status, landholdings, and ecclesiastical ties.

Additional Notes:
- Prebenda de Guthry / Ecclesia Collegiata de Guthre: Treated as a distinct simple prebend of Brechin Cathedral (1372 chapter declaration, transsumpt 1449). Later royal confirmations (1576–7) explicitly name Gabriel Guthre (provostry) and Andree Guthre (prebend of Hiltoun and Langlandis). This is one of the strongest threads showing long-term family association with the collegiate church that bears their name. Citation: Vol. 1 (1372 declaration + 1576–7 precepts); Vol. 2, Appendix p. 77 and CCCV.
- General pattern across the source: 14th–15th century entries emphasize prebends, Brechin burgh land boundaries, and administrative/judicial roles (camerarius, ballivus, jurors, court clerks). 16th–17th century Appendix entries show continuity of landholding (Balnabreche, Pitforthie, Lunan, Dawgathy) and post-Reformation family members in teind tacks, sasines, and collegiate church offices.
