The summer Olympics are happening in Paris right now. Wishing all of the competitors the best. May they all achieve their peak performances at the games. I’ll be cheering for Team USA from the spectacular viewpoint of my living room couch. We also have a few flips, twists, and turns going on at FamilyTreeDNA right now as they partner up with MyHeritage to give you a more user-friendly tree presentation. This should not have a major impact on the Guthrie DNA Project moving forward as long as we’re still able to view the trees presented to us by our genetic matches. Those of you with project-related DNA tests housed at FTDNA should have received direct notification from them about this change. HURRICANE SEASON
Houston, Texas is home to FamilyTreeDNA’s headquarters. The city had been impacted by floods and power outages caused by Hurricane Beryl. Our genetic samples remain safely secured. The lab seems to be catching up. We’re starting to see some DNA test results coming through again. If you mailed a new test kit to FTDNA and the notice posted on your profile page does not indicate they received it, call or message them to inquire about the status of your kit.

GFG2C – Descendants of Robert Guthrie (1752PA – 1815OH) and Elizabeth Jane Caldwell (PA/OH, USA):
Robert Guthrie was first theorized by ‘American Guthrie and Allied Families’ author, Lawrence R Guthrie, to be a descendant of GFG2A – Branch I. The Y-DNA of two direct line Guthrie men who share Robert Guthrie as their most recent common paternal line ancestor is unique to the project, and does not match the GFG2A profile. One of the two Guthrie men representing GFG2C with Y-DNA tests upgraded to a Big-Y test. Fortunately, a genetic match at FTDNA also has a Big-Y test for comparison. The most recent common direct paternal line ancestor between them was show to be born about 1361, so obviously not Robert Guthrie’s father, but a more distant grandfather of some degree. Importantly, this man is from the Netherlands, and his ancestors have been there for an extended period, which probably indicates that Robert Guthrie’s paternal origins are Dutch.

The potential for Dutch ancestry in GFG2C is interesting and serves as an vital clue for determining the Guthrie home in which Robert Guthrie grew up. Keep in mind that New York was once a Dutch settlement. They traded along the Houston River as early as 1611 and established Fort Amsterdam in 1625. There were pockets of Dutch settlers in the New England area. Whichever Guthrie family Robert belonged to probably had regional, religious, or extended family ties to the Dutch.

GFG7 – Final Comparative Results Still Pending:

Results so far…
We finally have some Big-Y results for our Guthrie-Burrows branch for GFG7.
As anticipated, results match those of our Branch-D participant.
Next comes the addition of the new results to the Group Time Tree, which will show any update to the estimation for when their Most Recent Common ancestor was born.
They have been assigned Haplogroup R-FTF24857.
The Guthrie-Burrows family descends from an Ayrshire Guthrie line who’s earliest ancestors are John Guthrie (d1769) and Jean Dunlop..
The Branch D line has been traced back to Ireland in the 1740s, so presumably the MRCA would be in Scotland at an earlier date. It will be interesting to see the prediction as to how much earlier their MRCA lived.

GROUP NEWS

GFG5 – Branch D: Adding a New Generation!
Descendants of James C Guthrie and Nancy Corn may already know this information. I stumbled across it when updating GFG5 info for Guthrie Genealogy Family Groups. James’ father is a John Guthrie who was “a native of Scotland and a pioneer of Georgia” according to a biographical sketch of James’ son-in-law, William M Blankenship. The sketch includes Guthrie family data, too. John served during the Revolutionary War and received a severe wound through the body, but recovered to resume the work of a planter in Georgia. It sounds as if this branch of GFG5 may have come to America via a separate immigration from the branches in Virgina.

GFG17 – Descendants of David Guthrie (c1650 – p1732) and Janet Stewart (Brechin, Scotland)
This one is exciting! It provides us with Y-DNA confirmation for 3 lines of descendant from David Guthrie and Janet Stewart via 3 different sons.
1) David Guthrie (in Kincraig) is the theorized father of John Guthrie (farmer in Knowhead) and Helen Wyllie. This line includes descendant Rev. Thomas Guthrie (1803SCT-1873ENG).
2) Alexander Guthrie (in Balfour in Menmuir) and Anne Ker
3) Robert Guthrie (in Bogside, Craigtown, and Glenmoy) and Helen Eddieson
