GFG1A Match
Our newest Guthrie DNA Project participant extends the line for our Middlesex County, Virginia family from GFG1A-Branch B. The most recent common ancestor proven through direct paternal line (Y-DNA) testing is James Guthrie 1758VA-1848OH & his wife Jane Candler. James was the son of Henry Guthrie and Penelope Johnson, grandson of John Guthrie and Mary Shay, and the great-grandson of John Guthrie and Elizabeth Baskett, the immigrant ancestors of this line who came from Scotland and settled in tidewater Virginia. After leaving Virginia for Ohio, one generation took a brief detour to Iowa during the 1850s before finally settling in Madison County, Ohio.
An asterisk (*) below indicates descendants with a YDNA test.

THE GENETICS: Y-DNA 111 marker Test
This participant has a Y-111 test, which is considered a high quality direct paternal line DNA test.
He has only 1 difference compared to the Group Mode Result, which is the most common value found for GFG1A men at any given genetic marker. This puts him firmly in the same genetic profile as the rest of the Middlesex, VA descendants, which is where we would expect him to be based on his lineage.
Genetic Marker: DYS532
This participant has a value of 14 instead of the Group Mode Result = 15.
It is a result unique to him. If other closer relations on this part of the GFG1A-Branch B line participate in Y-DNA testing, we might be able to tell if this mutation was inherited from previous generations or if it is an example of random and recent genetic change.
Hi, is there an autosomal ftdna group to join?
Same project. You can participate with an AncestryDNA test, which you can also transfer to Family Tree DNA for free to gain access to a second database. Transfer other eligible tests to FTDNA, or participate directly at FTDNA with their Family Finder test. If you already have Ancestry results, just send me an invitation with ‘viewer’ access and a link to your tree. My username is AnnGU3. If you are transferring data to FTDNA, simply sign up for the Guthrie DNA Project after your kit has been transferred, they have given you a kit number, and you are signed in.
