DAVIDSON COUNTY
Davidson is the oldest county in the Middle Tennessee region
founded on 6 October 1783. The county seat is Nashville.
SOURCE: Tennessee State Library and Archives, Mf. 484 — Civil War Questionnaires, ca. 1800-1922. 1,700 items. TSLA. 9 reels. 35 mm.
This collection consists of questionnaires, which were sent to all known living Civil War veterans in Tennessee in 1914-15 and 1920, and returned by 1922. There were 1,650 respondents—Union and Confederate—and the questionnaires they returned contain information regarding date and place of birth; date and place of enlistment; company and regiment; war service, including descriptions of battles and prison life; economic and social status of the soldier and his family; genealogical, educational and religious data; and occupation before and after the war. Several questionnaires contain additional descriptive material. An invaluable resource for the social history of Tennessee’s Civil War soldiers, the abstracted questionnaires is also available in a five volume published edition. Index and register available.

p.11 Early Settlement: “In 1802 settlers from Virginia came to the county and settled on the headwaters of Big Richland Creek and White Oak Creek. These settlers included (among others listed) Edmund Woldridge. The county was very sparsely settled untol about 1805. From the very first days of settlement until as late as 1812 the Indians were a constant annoyance to the early settlers. The savages had several villages or encampments in the county by this time and were extremely hostile to the white intruders of the Hunting Ground. They made frequent raids on the settlements, burning the homes of the pioneers, dispersing their stock to the woods, and, in several instances, killing settlers who tried to protect their families and property.
