Guthridge’s Hill.
“In going south on Route #17 from the entrance of “Locust Grove”, a branch is crossed and then we come to a hill. It is called Guthridge’s Hill, being named after a family that once lived there. At present Mr Bud Humphrey lives on the hill in a new bungalow. // During the Civil War soldiers threw up breastworks on this hill. They told Mrs Eskridge there was going to be a battle and that she had better move out, but she didn’t do it and there was no battle. When the road was improved some years ago they tore down the breastworks. // There was an old school Baptist Church west of the road and back of Mr Bud Humphrey’s house. When the Federals were camped nearby in the field they burned the church, but they had one of the wooden benches at the camp. When they left Mrs Eskridge brought it to the house. It is on her front porch now.”

Note: There is a Guthridge family (variant spellings) that is well established in Fauquier County. They are there before and after Thomas Guthrie shows up in the local records. It is probably important to note that the documents make a distinction in the spelling of the Gutridge vs Guthrie name within the same tax year. Thomas is also assessed at a different time versus the Gutridge men. This suggests that Thomas Guthrie might not be related to the Gutridge family. They do have a documented Thomas Gutridge, but he does not make an appearance in the tax records until after Thomas Guthrie has already left for Kentucky.
The Gutridge name may or may not be a variant of Guthrie. It tends to be associated with England, so could be an Anglicized version of the name Guthrie, or a variation of Goodrich/Goodridge. The family of Allen Gutridge reportedly came to America from Devon, England.

Kentucky 1790 Census

In 1790, the present Commonwealth of Kentucky was a part of Virginia, although they were in the process of trying to form a separate state. This movement resulted in the formation of the Territory of Kentucky on 26 July 1790. Kentucky was formally admitted to the Union on 1 June 1792. The taking of the first census was ordered to begin on the 1st Monday in August 1790 and was to be completed within nine months. This date was after Kentucky’s separation from Virginia. Census returns were sent to Washington to be filed with the State Department. The original census records were destroyed when the British burned the Capitol at Washington during the War of 1812.
