Australia / New Zealand

New Zealand had been discovered and settled by Polynesians 700s years before the arrival of the first Europeans. Captain James Cook reached New Zealand in October 1769 being the first European explorer to circumnavigate and map New Zealand.
The first European exploration of Australia was in February of 1606 by Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon, and in October that year by Spanish explorer Luis Vaz de Torres. In 1770, James Cook charted the east coast of Australia claiming it for Great Britain. The First Fleet of British Ships arrived at Botany Bay in January 1788 to establish a penal colony.
